REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO -Skovlunde 21 Nov 1997. Dear friends, I heard
the new pirate Radio San Marino International on their first test on
11410 kHz USB on 19 Oct. I first sent them a reception report by e-mail,
but was asked back to send it to the PLAY DX address in Milan with 2
IRCs. I did so and 18 days later I received a beautiful, multicoloured,
correct QSL-letter from the station, signed by S. Gasperino - C.E. It
was numbered QSL no. 000015 and poststamped from the Republic of San
Marino in an envelope with a San Marino stamp. The Chief Engineer
confirms my reception of their first test "from the territory of the
Republic of San Marino with the power of 0,3 kW and inverted-V
antenna." Until the opposite is proved, I count this as a new country
verified. By the way, I visited the small Republic on my way to the EDXC
Conference in April 1996. It is a touristic gem, worth to visit! Best

GLEANINGS

BELGIUM - RVI announced that its listeners' club has been closed, and
there is a new QSL policy: one per semester, instead of one per month.
Gee, I haven't got a QSL from Belgium since World's Fair Radio in 1958,
and I've survived (Glenn Hauser, OK, Nov 16 / SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22,
Nov 20, 1997)

BOLIVIA - 5504.2 Radioemisora 2 de Febrero, the Rurrenabaque; has
celebrated its 30th an niversary. The station was founded by Roger Arze
Salmon, on November 18, 1967, and it was initially established in the
city of Reyes, whose name was Radio Emisoras Reyes "La Voz de los Santos
Reyes". The station was officially licensed by DGT (Direccion General de
Telecomunicaciones) on October 23, 1968 to operate on the frequency of
3390kHz in the 90 meter band with callsign of CP109. After several
years' transmission there, the station moved into Rurrenabaque (50
minutes from Reyes by public bus). When it was reinstalled in
Rurrenabaque, the station was renamed as "Radioemisora 2 de Febrero"
after the foundation da y of the city. Since then Radioemisora 2 de
Febrero has broadcast on 5505kHz (drifting between 5505.1-5504.3kHz),
however it has been authorized to transmit on 5020kHz in the 60 meter
band. (In November 1983, the station was observed on 5020.3kHz for
several days, but it returned again to 5505kHz.)They have two
transmitters: one is home-brew (500W), the another one is "G & M
Equipment Co.Inc." brand (100W). Antenna is 1/2 wave dipole antenna.
They are currently using only 100W transmitter due to economical reason.
Transmission schedule is as follows: 1200-1530 and 0000-0230 (Monday to
Friday); no operation on Saturday; 0000-0200 on local Sundays. Weekday
programs are consisted by the following items: 1200-1430 educational
programs (transcription service) produced and presented by "Fe y
Alegria" and "Ministerio de Educacion y Cultura", 1430-1530 various
radio-novels, 0000-0100 music and public information, presented by
"CORDEBENI" and local municipal office. 0100-0230 "Compartiendo la
Noche" with music request and message service (free of charge). Sunday
programs are consisted by 0000-0045 soft and light music, then mass
relay. As the electricity supply is available only in the local evening
(2200-0400 UTC), they use their own generator for the morning
transmission.
QTH: Calle Vaca Diez No.400, Rurrenabaque, Provincia
Ballivian, Departamento de Beni, Bolivia. (TIN / Relampago Dx

CLANDESTINE - AFRICA, 6210 Radio Fana, 0410, local talk and mx, //
6940. Really good signal, but occasional bubble jammer.
(13-Nov/Novello-NC USA / NASWA LN Dec 97)

CLANDESTINE - 5670.03 Voice of the Mojahed, 0254 M in non-Arabic
language, then bubble jammer attacked frequency seconds later. Through
the bubbles, could hear typical spelling of addresses in English letters
and long phone numbers being read using English numbers, just like on
9564.95 July 17. Station bounced back and forth between 5620, 5660 and
5670 to avoid roving jammer, rarely spending more than a few minutes on
any frequency. (5-Nov/Novello-NC USA / NASWA LN Dec 97)

COSTA RICA - I haven't heard AWR Wavescan for several weeks. On Sun Nov
16 TIAWR did not air it at 1100 or 2300, but I heard a promo for some
other program during these hours, so perhaps it is no longer scheduled
then. Tho it was on WRMI 9955 for a couple of weeks, Sun at 2000,
something else was running then on Nov 16 (Glenn Hauser, OK/
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

COSTA RICA - It always happens. After I mentioned last week that TIAWR
Wavescan had been missing, it was back Sun Nov 23 at 1104, best on 6150,
2303 on 9725, but four weeks old, featuring Radio St. Helena Day "today,
today". It seems the Americans are poor cousins to the Europeans, who
presumably get it on time via Slovakia (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING Nov 24 / SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-23, Nov 26,
1997)

CUBA - Latest RHC problems on the European service: on Nov 14 at 2100,
13715 no longer had the double-carrier problem, but the audio kept
rising to a peak, cutting back to nothing, and rising again every few
seconds. This continued into the French program at 2130, where a new
announcement mentioning //13605-USB still called 13715 "FM" instead of
"AM". But on Nov 18, 13715 had resumed its previous problem at 2020
confirming my earlier observations: there was a brief transmitter break,
during which the strength went down but the audio continued at a higher
level. I believe this was because once again two non-synchronized
transmitters were in use, the stronger signal with weaker audio. When
the stronger one came back on it tended to blot out the stronger audio
on the weaker transmitter, and by 2025 there was hardly any modulation
audible, which continued into 2030 English (Glenn Hauser, OK, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING)

ERITREA - [non] I've been monitoring the new clandestines on 9230.
Signals are fair to poor from day to day, and modulation is fair, could
be better. Nov 15: 1415 Qur'an, weak and fluttery, 1417 anmt, mx and
talk, mostly music with brief talks, dead air or low modulation, 1436
anmt and into declamatory talk, off at 1446* Nov 16: *1413 with open
carrier, 1414 tone and undermod anmt, mx, off at 1446:40*. Nov 17 ran
1415-1448:30*, including 1431 Arabic ID "Huna..."; this date checked
between 1500 and 1530 and nothing on 9230 or 9300, the frequency BBCM
says is announced. Nov 19: 1414:50 3 plus 1 time signal 10 seconds
early--on a previous occasion it was more than 10 seconds late, so it's
a phony time signal; ID, Arabic, Qur'an; toward the end at 1445 the tape
was snagging badly causing awful wows in music, so cut off
broadcast.*1459 9230 was back on, with drumbeats, march beat, which BBCM
characterizes as machine-gun fire, "Huna Sawt ul...", adding vocal to
the march music; 1503 bits of talk, 1510 mostly music, fading, 1517
another Arabic ID, march music starts over, 1523 same tape-snagging
problem, so must be not only from same transmitter but same studio,
1532* with no ID. BBCM says the 1415 transmission is V. of Free Eritrea,
the 1500 V. of Truth, believed to be from Sudan. I'm wondering why so
much Arabic, since that is not a major language of Eritrea; is it
becoming a second language instead of Amharic, of the former Ethiopian
colonial masters? (Glenn Hauser, OK/ SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20,
1997)

GERMANY - 5840 GERMANY R. Renascenca Relay *1900-2000* Re my unID in
last week's report, this turned out to be a Deutsche Telekom switching
error resulting in an unintentional relay of Portugal's R. Renascenca.
(Hill, MA USA)

IRAN - [non] Democratic V. of Iran's latest sked: 1830-1900 on 6210,
5835; sites not known (REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING Nov 18/
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

IRELAND - [non]. Since the winter time for the NAm service of West Coast
Radio Ireland, UT Thu 0100 on 5905 via Germany, coincides with a time
when Michael Commins is doing his live show on Mid West Radio, it is
feasible to simulcast, making this WCRI broadcast live rather than taped
like the European service on Sat. (Finbarr O'Driscoll, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING Nov 18) In fact, the Nov 20 broadcast was
apparently live, taking phone calls (Glenn Hauser, OK/ SHORTWAVE/DX
REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

KOREA NORTH - The English portions of Ashimori's monitored sked for R.
Pyongyang, with the addition of feeders 3560 and/or 4405, but lacking
target areas, exactly match the frequencies in the printed sked I gave
here last week. Since then I have checked several times for the new 1800
and 2100 to NAm, but never hear any signal on 11700, and 13760 is
blocked by WHRI, without even a het as was once the case (Glenn Hauser,
OK / SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-23, Nov 26, 1997)

LIBERIA - 3450, R. Veritas. Dan Henderson called on behalf of the gang
at the Cape Hatteras DXpedition, North Carolina--Cones, ermanotta,
Henderson, Hester, Merriman, Novello and Rippel--to report that they hrd
a stn on 3450 IDing as "R. Veritas, b/cing from the Catholic Media
Center, in Monrovia, Liberia." They ancd 97.8 FM and 3450 SW. S/off
was 2200 on SW, and said they would continue to 2300 on FM with an hour
of Liberian mx. Reasonably good signal, quite good from arnd 2110, and
stayed solid to 2200. Address given as P.O. Box 3569, Monrovia, which
matches the entry for the Catholic religious stn, ELCM, in WRTH-97, p.
154.FM fqy also matches. Also ancd two phone numbers: 237697 and
236979. This was not //5100, which was hrd at the same time.(Jerry
Berg, NU 14/11 / EDXP # 67).

MALTA - Voice of the Mediterranean has a "DX Corner" in its En pxs on
Saturdays, in the service to Europe and Mediterranean Region 2000-2100
on 7440. (Radio Mediterranean/Bob Padula EDXP # 67).

NEW ZEALAND - RNZI's program sked has been partially updated on their
website, for example deleting BBC relay at 1100, but says it makes no
allowance for DST shifts of RNZ programming, so it's quite a mess. Site
also reveals that RNZI joined World Radio Network on Nov 15 with a
weekly program including Dateline Pacific: Eu Sat 1500, Am Sat 1800,
Af/As Sun 0500 (Glenn Hauser, REVIEW OF INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING Nov
18/ SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

NICARAGUA - R. Miskut, 5770-USB, Nov 26 at 1205 with hyper Spanish news,
badly distorting on peaks, versus heavy continuous RTTY. No LSB, and a
reduced carrier in there may have been from Miskut; 1215 TC for 6:17,
mentioned Zelaya; ID presumed. 1227 losing out to the high-speed RTTY
(Glenn Hauser, OK / SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-23, Nov 26, 1997)

PERU - 4571.4v - 4573v RADIO GOTAS DE ORO 17 November Vernacualar music.
" Fin de año mas alegre con Gotas de Oro, mas sabrosa..." " Gotas de Oro
mas impactante.." (Rodriguez, Colombia)

PORTUGAL - RDP International, Sun Nov 16 sports broadcast found on
17908, somewhat distorted and warbling carrier. Proved to be //listed
17745, and matching spur which was even louder and clearer than the
other two frequencies, 17583. Also //21655 quite weak--with so many open
frequencies still on 13m, why go adjacent to BBC 21660? (Glenn Hauser,
OK/ SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

PORTUGAL - Last week I neglected to give the time for RDP spurs on
17908, 17583--around 1530 UT. I see in BBC Monitoring that the source of
these, 17745, is on the air Sat and Sun only, at 1300-2100. Nov 23-24 it
was not so strong, and the spurs were not heard. See also ROMANIA (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 919 / SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-23, Nov 26,
1997)

REPUBBLICA DI SAN MARINO - Provisional schedule: Saturday December 20th,
1997: 2000 - 2400 UTC on 7.580 kHz LSB, 2000 and 2200 in
Italian/English (1 hour), 2100 and 2300 in German (1h) --- Sunday
December 21st, 1997: 0400 - 0700 UTC on 7.580 kHz LSB, 0400 and 0600
in Italian/English (1h), 0500 in German (1h) --- 0700 - 1000 UTC on
7.440 kHz LSB, 0700 and 0900 in Italian/English (1h), 0800 in German
(1h) --- 0700 -1700 UTC on 11.410 kHz USB, 0700 and 0900 in German (1h),
0800 in Italian/English (1h), 1000 -1700 test at reduced power. If in
your country the frequencies, at the suggested times, are affected from
interferencies, we hope to receive your warning by sending an e-mail to
< RSMI@xxxxxxxxxxxx > before the end of this month. Thanks in advance
for your cooperation. RADIO SAN MARINO INTERNATIONAL will confirm all
the correct reception reports with: - QSL card with San Marino's
picture. - info about RSMI. - sticker (when available). The reports
will be sent to these mail addresses: - RSMI c/o Play DX, Via Davanzati
n.8, IT-20158 Milano, ITALY or - RSMI, P.O.Box 41 11 31, DE-55068 Mainz,
GERMANY, with: - 2 IRC or 2 US$ if coming from Europe; - 3 IRC or 3 USD
if coming from outside Europe. Please visit our updated site <
http://www.exactweb.com/RSMI > and the new page "QSL-INDEX" (Direct,
RADIO SAN MARINO INTERNATIONAL)

(As San Marino Republic has its own Constitution and legislation, I am
curious to know if its broadcast policy has more or less tollerance
toward unofficial SW stations. In my opinion, RSMI is a very good
tourist promotion for this tiny and beautiful republic ! Ed.)

ROMANIA - I see in BC-DX that RRI has a new broadcast for NAm at
0600-0656 on 6155 and 5965. And the 1230 has resumed its former time of
1300-1356. Nov 19 at 1353 check 17745 was the best by far though
announced as for WEu, while 17735 was under a het, 15390 very poor with
co-channel, and 15250 absent. Nov 20 at 0600 I heard no sign of it on
5965, and 6155 was occupied by BBC English lessons, tho something was
underneath; when BBC quit at 0615, the other station was in German--of
course, must have been Austria, so Romania loses out again (Glenn
Hauser, OK, and WORLD OF RADIO 918/ SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20,
1997)

RUSSIA -17570, 10344U, 9850 - Radiostancia Thikiy Okean was heard with
strong but flutter signal at 0815 on 17570 from Irkutsk and also on the
USB feeder fq of 10344 from Khabarovsk where is was weak. Furthermore
also direct from Vladivostok on 9850. There the signal was mediocre. All
freqs
almost free from interference. Nice local ID 'Govorit Vladivostok', IS,
followed by Thikiy Okean ID. Program Panorama.(Guido Schotmans, 17/11 /
EDXP # 67).

SPAIN - Distance Unknown has been missing from REE the past week or
two, formerly UT Suns around 0021 on 6055. Nov 16 I caught the
re-opening at 0101 when they said "DUNK has been suspended until Terry
Burgoyne is back with us again" (Glenn Hauser, OK/ SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT
97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

THAILAND - The 1230 broadcast on 9810 continues to be the best heard
here from R. Thailand, tho to As/Pac, not the evening broadcast
allegedly for NAm. Thu Nov 20 at 1245 after lots of news had a program
on Thai culture with music--but it only lasted three minutes until world
news started; strong signal but considerable flutter, actually better
than Australia-9580 on this occasion. Does anyone have a PROGRAM sked
for this station? I've suggested repeatedly to RT that they ought to
beam the 1230 and/or 1400 English broadcasts toward NAm, if not get on
VOA-USA relays Delano and Greenville like Greece (Glenn Hauser, OK/
SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

THAILAND - R. Thailand has changed both frequencies to NAm as of Nov 21:
0030-0200 13695 ex-11905; 0300-0430 15460 ex-11890 (Warren561, WORLD OF
RADIO 919) First half hour of each in English; not much here on 15460,
but some days 13695 is loud tho fluttery, other days barely audible;
wide variation due to high latitude path which could be avoided by using
Delano and Greenville (Hauser, OK / SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-23, Nov 26,
1997)

UNIDENTIFIED - 6237.24, 0415 Classical-style instrumental music, maybe
20th century Russian stuff. 10/9 signal, 5 minutes of news 0501 after
instrumental theme and intro that sounded like "Informatizone Shkode",
then back to the same music. Not present Nov 14, and neglected to check
on Nov 15. Renegade Albanian? (13-Nov/Novello-NC USA / NASWA LN Dec. 97)

URUGUAY - Re: 9650.35 Emisora Ciudad de Montevideo (CX42 relay),
Montevideo hrd by D.Clark: the sked for this SW outlet is daily
1300-2130. Occasionally, when sport events are broadcast, s/off occurs
later, as it was this case. These are soccer matches. The station also
uses to broadcast in extended sked when February's summer carnival
starts. By the way, still no date for expected inauguration of its
second SW fqy on 15230.(Nigro-Uruguay, Nov.18)

USA - [non]. News this week of what is happening to former VOA relay
sites: Bethany, Ohio, 600 acres is worth 600 million USD, and the
government want to demolish what is left, turn it into a golf course and
recreational facilities and a high-tech learning center to be shared by
area universities. Some of the land would be sold for commercial or
light industrial development, but it is customary for such land to be
deeded at little or no cost to local governments (Kevin O'Hanlon, AP via
Cleveland Plain Dealer via Jim Moats, and via David Alpert, REVIEW OF
INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING/ SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997) ---
And Monrovia, Liberia: Antennas still stand, but the grounds are home to
27,000 people displaced by the civil war. Tiny huts are open to cold
winds from the nearby Atlantic and flooding at high tide. People sleep
on the bare ground and commonly die of pneumonia. A former resident
called "VOA a death trap, a hell on earth." (David C. Butty, Detroit
News via Mike Cooper, R.I.B. / SHORTWAVE/DX REPORT 97-22, Nov 20, 1997)

YEMEN - 5951 Rep. of Yemen R. Has not been heard on this freq since
Nov. 19, although there was something on 5950.5 for a couple of days
afterwards; nothing at all on Nov. 22. ID still only tentative. (Hill,
MA USA).
