Thanks to the completion of the remodel at my home, I will be hosting a
DX Get-Together this summer. Date will be June 30th... time from 2-

2001 M STREET RADIO DIRECTORY (10th Edition)
The IRCA Bookstore is proud to announce that the 'M Street

Nostalgic music formatted WMRE in Charles Town WV was back on the air
on 5/20 and on the morning of 5/21, but went silent again. In fact, the
Clear Channel station has, more or less, been missing for about a month
with transmitter problems. And now, on the afternoon of 5/21 DCRTV heard
from a unnamed source who says you won't hear 1550 AM for quite a while:
"AM transmitter caught fire this morning. No way possible to
repair".....

"Lucaferul" - the 2nd programme of R.Moldova returned to the air a
couple of weeks ago. It was discontinued in August 2000 for financial
reasons. Lucaferul is aired 0500-1800 UTC Summer Time on 1449/1494 kHz &

Bullets pierce Fort Atkinson radio tower
(Published Saturday, May 26, 2001)
FORT ATKINSON--The WFAW-940 radio tower on Findlay Road lost power
Friday afternoon because someone shot up the building. Bullets pierced
the walls and struck various pieces of equipment, the Jefferson County
Sheriff's Department reported.
Total damage was estimated at $10,000. No injuries were reported.
Two men were seen speeding from the scene in a dark green car--
possibly a Ford Mustang-with white top.

I had originally thought they were leaving it on all night Saturday
night, but didn't hear them when I left for WKDK at 5 AM on Sunday AM,
but did hear them when I got to Newberry. So I set the Hallicrafters SX-
110 to 1090 and went to bed. When I woke up at 5:45 I turned up the
volume and there they are. Don't wait too long on this one.

shuttle bus service for Hermits Rest and Yaki Point, lots of hype
for new Canyon View Information Plaza near Mather Point. Easy to
log from the other side of the canyon. If you have this station
listed on 1610, scratch that listing, as the station moved to 530

530 (KGD50) AZ Jacob Lake - 5/21 1700 - No station noted at Jacob
Lake, and no signs posted. We were in the area for 2 days.

Kingman to the other, and no TIS noted this evening or the next

530 (KIF794) AZ Show Low - 5/19 1100 - No sign of the TIS listed for
Apache - Sitgreaves National Forest when we were in Show Low.

530 (TIS) AZ Tucson - 5/13 1800 - This is our second trip to Tucson
with no TIS noted on 530. I suspect this one (listed as "Pima

530 WNXE619 NM Silver City (area) - 5/17 1715 - Message by Ricardo
Montalban mentioned the mining history of this part of NM, and
was oriented toward Silver City. There are listings for stations
in Central and Silver City which must refer to the same station.
First noted weak signals on the car radio in San Lorenzo. As we
returned to Silver City, signal strength increased but not as
much as you'd expect for a 10-watt local station. May be
operating at reduced power, or located significantly S/SE of

530 (TIS) NM Lordsburg - 5/16 1920 - Noted OC at the visitor

530 UNID ?? - 5/20 1530 - From Mexican Water, AZ, and into Utah on US
191, we noted a seemingly low-power station running non-stop
hymns. Possibly a local church broadcast? (TRH-AZ1/TRH-UT1)
1610 (TIS) AZ Cameron - 5/23 1530 - Noted signs along US 89 for a new
Grand Canyon TIS near Cameron. Station is not on the air yet. A
similar station has recently come on the air in Valle, AZ, for
tourists approaching from the south. (TRH-AZ1)
1610 (KGD49) AZ Eldon - 5/24 1700 - No TIS noted as we headed north
out of Flagstaff on US 89 past the Eldon area. It seems like all
of these old Forest Service stations with "KGD--" calls are off

1610 KNNS750 AZ Flagstaff - 5/24 1545 - Great signal, already loud 10
miles NW of Flagstaff. General info about how to enroll at
Northern Arizona U., plus specific information for people

1610 KOJ794 AZ Pipe Springs National Monument - 5/21 1600 - New TIS
with tape loop by woman mentioning Kaibab Paiute indians, the
Arizona Strip, ranger guided tours of ranch house. Monument is
administered by the Zion Natural History Association, so it would
be very easy to confuse this station with one of the Zion
National Park stations. First noted at Kanab, UT, good at
Fredonia, and audible for a while on US 89A. (TRH-UT1/AZ1)
1610 (KOC733) AZ Rainbow Forest - 5/19 1430 - No TIS noted at the
South entrance of Petrified Forest NP. No signs up. Presume
this station is defunct. (TRH-AZ1)
1610 TIS AZ Valle - 5/24 1400 - New TIS "Grand Canyon Radio" for
visitors entering Grand Canyon NP from the South. Located at the
junction of US 180 and AZ 64 in Valle. Male voice on tape loop,
advises people to book rooms and campsites early in the day as
they will not last. (TRH-AZ1)
1610 KOJ793 AZ Why - 5/12 1920 - New TIS at Organ Pipe Cactus National
Monument. Tranmsmitter seems to be in Why, AZ, near the north
end of the monument, as the signal gets out well from that point
but is weaker at the visitor center near the south end of the
monument. Mentions keeping your speed to 55 MPH on Highway 85,
and talks about the the 2 main dirt roads for viewing the Cactus.
I need to check my tapes, as there is a chance I may have logged
this one from home and not known what it was. (TRH-AZ1)
1610 (KMC478) CA Imperial Sand Dunes - 5/26 1815 - No TIS noted at
this location when we drove through the area, and no signs for
one. I believe this station is defunct (in fact, from my travels
in the last 2 years, I'd say the entire series of Department of
the Interior stations with "KMC" calls are all gone). (TRH-CA1)
1610 (KMC483) CA Vidal - 5/26 1630 - No TIS station noted at Vidal
Junction or the town of Vidal itself. I believe this station is
long gone. (TRH-CA1)
1610 (KMC426) CA Yuha - 5/12 1250 - No TIS station active as we drove
through the area, and no signs. I believe this station is
defunct. (TRH-CA1)
1610 TIS CA South San Diego - 5/12 0830, 5/26 2150 - The scratchy pest
at the San Ysidro border crossing is moving to 1700 kHz, where
they will do much less damage. Existing signs are being changed,
and several new signs have been added along I-5, I-805, and CA-
905. The new station will deliver traffic information when
lights on the new signs are flashing. (This is odd, as there is
never a wait to get into Mexico, but there is often a 2-hour wait
to come back into the US; the main purpose of this station is to
warn people not to bring guns into Mexico, as several dozen
morons get imprisoned in Tijuana each year for doing this). For
now, the station remains on 1610 even though the signs have
changed. (TRH-CA1)
1610 KOJ786 UT Zion National Park - 5/22 2254 - Noted 3 stations from
Zion NP tonight. The first one, for visitors entering via UT
highway 9, had a tape loop with a female announcer who talked
about the new shuttle bus service and escorts for large vehicles.
It mentioned to tune into 1610 again about 16 miles up the road.
The second station, which was weaker, seemed to be that station.
The third station was a tape loop with a male voice saying "This
is a test broadcast for Zion National Park, 16-10 AM, 1-2-3". At
least one of these stations appeared to be running 100-200Hz
high. (TRH-AZ8) 5/24 0107 - the first station was audible at
the South Rim, despite the fact that several other stations are
closer. (TRH-AZ9)
1680 "KJACK" AZ Flagstaff - 5/24 1550 - Student radio station for
Northern Arizona U. with mindless music. Slogan "K-Jack, the
alternative" and "Student voice, student choice". Gets out very
well. Seems like 10 watts with very clean audio. Thanks Doug

MEXICO: XELBL-1350 San Luis Rio Colorado SON is still here and still
using "Radio Centro" slogans. Station has NOT moved to 1570 as reported
on some web sites. This may be a CP. XETM-1350 Naco, SON is silent.
Not noted from 2 miles north of Naco along the US Mexican border, or
from other points in SE AZ over a 2 day period.
DX-wise, this was a much better trip than most of my recent business
trips and vacations. My new Quantum QX Loop performed very well in
isolated locations without too many locals (it doesn't work that so well
in locations like San Diego or Tucson where there are lots of high-
powered local stations, as it is prone to smearing false signals across
the dial in those congested markets).
Conditions in Page, AZ were fantastic. Signal quality was reminiscent
of the 70s or 80s. Even on the car radio at sunset, signals were
livelier than I have heard in years. I was in a basement hotel room but
had some of the best reception I have had in years.
It's sad to see so many TIS stations disappearing each year, but I was
happy to discover 4 or 5 new ones this time. If you have any fresh TIS
info that you haven't seen published, please get it to a club editor or
list server! The FCC web site is missing tons of stations, and most
other lists and web sites are getting very stale. We TIS hunters need
your help!

Here are a few notes I made while on a just-completed trip out to the
Vancouver area. Most of the TIS activity I heard was on the FM band,
but here's what I noted on the AM side:
1490 Glacier Park, BC Parks Canada station in English in the Rogers
Pass area. Oddly, no equivalent French language station noted.
1490 Revelstoke, BC Ministry of Highways HAR with short tape loop,
giving phone numbers to call. Saw several other signs for 1490
between Revelstoke and the Alberta border, but this was the only
one that had any audio. Typically, they're only on the air when
traffic problems exist.
1580 Revelstoke, BC CBPK Environment Canada weather station. I don't
hear this one from home like I used to a few years ago, but it's
still on the air with regional weather info. Likewise 1260 in
Sicamous was also on.
Back in Alberta, in Banff I noted EE and FF Parks Canada stations on
FM, and similarly in Waterton on the road in. The Waterton tape loop
advised to tune to other stations in the park where signposted, but I
certainly didn't see or hear signs of any others.

Don Nelson, Walt Salmaniw and I spent Memorial Weekend at our
DXpedition site at Grayland, WA. Walt and Don largely concentrated on
SWBC DX, while I tried to swim against terrible MW propagation to hold
up the MW DX end of the stick. The MW propagation conditions were the
worst that I've experienced on the Pacific Coast since a truly terrible
camping-DXpedition with Guy Atkins and Nick Hall-Patch at Jordan River,
BC just after the peak of the last solar cycle. At least this time there
were toilets, beds and refrigerators. The first night of "DXing," May 26
yielded a handful of trans-Pacific "hets" and four instances of
threshold audio. The following two nights yielded slight improvements in
results each night, with the last night - May 29 - yielding the only
multiple loggings of Aussies, again at threshold levels. The fellowship
was grand as usual, but the entire affair will certainly serve as a
contrast when conditions once again enable our usual excellent results
from this site. The following loggings list reads MUCH better than it
actually was!

I have hooked up a 40 foot vertical up in the backyard with a series
of Ground rods for a Ground plane. It works pretty good and does throw a
lobe mostly to the North for some reason. Any ideas on a loading coil I
could wrap to extend the length? Or is it worthwhile? Also has anyone
experimented with more than one vertical tp phase them to get a
directional pattern for receiving? I wonder how they would compare with
other antennas?

antennas, some of which also discuss phased arrays of verticals. Some
possibilities, based on a quick look through my bookshelf:
The ARRL Antenna Book
Antennas and Techniques for Low Band DXing - John Devoldere (good
because it concentrates on 80/160 meters as opposed to higher freqs) The
ARRL Antenna Compendium (they put out a new volume every couple years,
Vol 2 1989 and Vol 3 1992 discuss phasing verticals, I don't have any
recent ones so I don't know what they have, but it's probably possible
to get back copies of older editions

All the work in the world has been done on MW directional antennas.
It's mostly on the BC transmitting side, but all the math applies.
That's why not much hobby material has been written.
Phasing of verticals is easy if you use fixed-length coax to do the
phasing. If you wanna use variable caps and inductors to do the phasing,
it can get difficult. If you want to use a coax to feed your shack from
two or more verticals, by all means try to use low-loss coax. If you use
low-loss coax, then loading coils can be avoided at the tower end. If
you use loading coils at the receiver end, it'll throw all kinds of
wildness into any phasing attemps. Probably best to avoid loading coils
and just use phasing caps and inductors to develop a pattern.
Yes, patterns are possible....entirely possible. I would say put up as
tall a vertical as possible and use low-loss coax to connect to the
shack.
Oh, yes! I'd also say: BURY THE COAX AS DEEP AS POSSIBLE. Above-ground
coax can throw all kinds of loops and stuff into directive patterns.

Yes, a loading coil would make a great deal of difference. When I had
a Medfer on 530 kHz, I used the traditional ten foot radiator with a
loading coil big enough to kill Cleveland. Use white PVC pipe (the black
stuff conducts and will wreck your coil) and use #12 wire used for
household wiring. Make yourself a tightly wound coil on 3 or 4 inch PVC
pipe that is about three feet tall. Connect one end to the receiver.
Then you have to bare small nicks in single winds of the coil so you can
hunt up and down the coil for the right inductance to cancel the
capacitive reactance to achieve resonance. Try touching the antenna wire
up and down the coil until you find the best spot for the particular
frequency you are trying to receive. Use an alligator clip to hold the
antenna onto the right place on the coil. The taps that you create with
these nicks will vary greatly with frequency - more coil for the lower
frequencies. The ground connection should be away from the coil and go
directly to the receiver. You should see dramatic changes has you hunt
up and down the coil. When you hit resonance, you'll see the signals
come way up. Capacitive hats on the vertical help too, but more on that
later. As for the null, it could be due to a nearby building or tower
phased against your vertical by an effect called re-radiation.

Reflector and on that latter reflector Tom Rauch has provided feedback
and i think there is also some earlier material by Tom in the archives
some brief comments from my present state of knowledge
(1) no need for loading coils for receive only applications rf current
levels are low and your losses from the earth mat resistance will be
high anyway, exacerbated by the low input resistance for any practicable
vertical antenna height for a mw dxer, actually i think Tom resistively
loads his vertical receive array to provide a more stable base input
impedance and hence greater pattern stability
(2) most practicable vertical for mw is probably a single section 30
foot length of aluminium irrigation tube - low cost and effective
alternative a set of telescoping tubes can be extended to the necessary
height just get a 8 foot length of 4" x 4" treated timber, use a
posthole digger to dig a 4 foot hole and attach the tube to the upper 4
foot. you may want to sleeve the tube section in contact with the post
with pvc electrical conduit no guying necessary
(3) alternative vertical is the 8 metre telescoping fibreglass pole
with a wire attached but more costly - brian dodgson used such a setup
on his recent central australia trip
(4) keep the vertical well away from vertical tree trunks - they are
surprisingly conductive when in live and growing state and will distort
your pattern shape by parasitic reradiation
(5) in terms of signal levels - depending on ground conductivity -
every foot of wire vertically will produce a signal equal to about ten
feet of horizontal beverage - so a 30 foot vertical is about the same as
a 300 foot beverage (i am looking at arrays of 60 foot verticals, but
they will have to be guyed at this height
(6) you can phase two identical verticals to get all the classic two
mast DA patterns of the mw bc stations - with a null in pretty much any
direction - suspect the mfj phaser would work fine
(7) independent phasing of 3 or more masts is well nigh impossible for
broadband mw usage, you will need to look at end fire and broadside
arrays with combinations of just in phase feeding and 180 degree phase
shifted feeds
(8) Tom describes his vertical receiving array as "significantly
better than a beverage"
(9) There is considerable engineering journal literature on the
subject of super directive receive antenna arrays (military has obvious
usage), go to the ieee website and do a search on that topic and you
will get about 20 hits i think and each relevant article has a
bibliography to extend that list
(10) I haven't seen actual details of Tom's array but if not in
topband archive he may post it for you on the topband reflector, the 160
m hams tend to be narrow band focussed but most of their work can be
extended to broadband mw dx to some extent
(11) i move onto a 10 acre rural block next week so hope to be able to
compare notes with you on this subject over the coming months

Ive had a 35 foot vertical with 3 radials for bands 19 thru 60 meters
for a while now and it performs quite well. As with all my different
antennas certain signals sound clearer on it. Im moving in 3 weeks to a
new home we bought with a lot more space and I will hang a vertical
there also.

Has anyone experimented with verticals for receiving? I have built a
40 foot vertical in the backyard with a series of Ground rods for a
Ground Plane. It is a very quiet antenna I find with somewhat of a lobe
to the North. The vertical is a wire up a spruce tree and a 15 foot pole
at the top. Any thoughts on what I could build for a loading coil? How
about a series of verticals for phasing? I wonder how this would compare
with other antennas?

Don't forget that your EWE antenna is essentially two phased vertical
antennas.
For general information on phasing, the ARRL Antenna Handbook is good.
Probably the simplest arrangement is phasing with equal-length feedlines
to a common point, and then a single coax feed to the shack (I can't
recall if this is broadside or endfire reception, but I think proper
performance is limited to a single, narrow design frequency due to
impedance and other factors).

I am moving in 2 weeks to a much larger lot but a new lot with no
trees, I have posted to the K9AY list for input there but I am looking
for advice other antennas I can try. There are no trees but the house
does have a 35 foot roof which I plan to hang a vertical off of. I can
also run a longwire, inverted v or even a delta loop off of it also. On
the vertical since I am going to have to breing in topsoil I can place a
good amount of radials, my first question is if I have a central ground
rod where the radials are connected, say 30 feet from where the earth
side of the vertical is can I run lead wire from the coax shield for the
vertical to the central ground rod 30 feet away? Also what would be the
best radial pattern? I have about 1/2 acre to work with.
On the horizontal possibilities...I can run a longwire sloping either
East or West from 35 feet to a distance of about 150 feet either way,
Would I be best served setting up an inverted V dipole, a longwire with
a balun, or some form of loop? Im open to any comments on this. My
ALA1530 will be behind the fence placed in a drainage creek which has
about 6 inches of water in it, kind of a little stream. Beverages...Ive
never had enough room for a really longwire, I know 300 feet isnt true
beverage length but it is the best Ive had since I began, the 300 foot
run is East-West, Can I run 2 side by side separated by 6 inches or so
to get East - West and West - East coverage? One last item, I plan to
bury my coax, what is the best but most pliable coax I can use to bury?

Another simple alternative is the helical vertical. When I lived in
Honduras in the early 1980s, I had one of these wound around a 10 meter
piece of bamboo which was then tied to the side of a palm tree (which
probably also acted as an antenna). It worked great except when a palm
frond fell every six weeks or so, usually breaking my lead-in.
I also had one for several years here in Iowa until it came down in a
storm about a year ago. That consisted of 60 meters of insulated wire
wound around a 10 foot (approx 3 meter) length of PVC. The windings were
spaced about one to two cm apart (I wasn't very exact) and secured with
black electrical tape every several windings. At the center of the back
of my garage, where the roof peaked, I nailed a standard 8 foot 2x2
board so that half the board was nailed into the garage and the other
half was above the garage. The antenna PVC was then slipped about one
meter inside another slightly larger PVC and bolted and then this was
carefully lifted up and slipped down over the 2x2, which it fit snuggly.
I attached 3 radials that also served as guy wires, and brought it in
through a coax lead-in. It seemed to work a little better going through
a 10:1 balun.
This antenna was generally my best antenna on the mid-frequencies,
especially 31 & 25 meters and 8 MHz utes. At one point I had a total of
five antennas up and this one was usually the second best. It never beat
out one of the two 125 meter mini-beverages on the lower frequencies &
it rarely beat out a 5 meter wire that worked well on the high
frequencies. Still, a good all-around antenna for SW purposes. Never
used it for MW, though.

ABC Plans Involuntary Layoffs
Disney announced in March it would cut 3% of its 120,000-strong
workforce, which the company hoped to accomplish through a "voluntary
separation program." Too few stepped forward to accept the severance
package, so now the company is looking at job cuts. "There is an ongoing
workforce reduction that will affect about 4,000 employees company-
wide," ABC spokeswoman Julie Hoover tells R&R ONLINE. "There was a
voluntary aspect, and there may be an involuntary aspect. The process
should be completed by the end of July." Hoover had no comment on how
many employees had accepted the voluntary layoffs or whether the
involuntary cuts would affect radio.

TV And Radio News Jobs Keep Many Unmarried

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- A June wedding might be a wish deferred for your
favorite television or radio newsperson. According to a University of
Missouri-Columbia researcher, many single broadcast journalists would
like to be married, but their jobs get in the way.
Vernon Stone, professor emeritus of journalism, surveyed 2,195 news
professionals at commercial television and radio stations and found that
45 percent of the news staff in television and 49 percent in radio were
single. Fifty-two percent of the unmarried TV news workers and 46
percent of those in radio said their jobs had caused problems in their
personal lives, often in romantic relationships.
Job moves can block Cupid's arrows. Stone's mail survey found that, on
average, journalists in television move to another city every three
years and those in radio leave town after two and a half years. Many
move much more often. A TV reporter/weekend anchorwoman, 31, wrote, "I'm
probably not married because I move so much, six jobs and cities in nine
years since getting out of school. Each time I had to leave alone."
"My partner and I can't set a wedding date because we can't find jobs
in the same city," explained a female TV producer, 26.
"Someday I'd like to get married and have kids," a female TV reporter,
24, said. "I've even met a wonderful guy here in town. But I'm so
ambitious I'd leave town to get a better job."
Many of the survey respondents felt married to their jobs. A female TV
reporter, 26, said, "I often feel I've put my life on hold. Meanwhile, I
have virtually no social life.
"I broke up with a live-in girlfriend because she felt my job meant
more to me than she did. And it did," a TV anchorman, 27, told Stone's
survey.
"Girlfriends think I'm too committed to news and my listeners," a
radio news director, 27, wrote.
"Significant others often don't understand the demands of my job, such
as having to cancel plans because of a breaking story," a female TV
reporter, 34, added.
Unmarried journalists often blamed odd or unpredictable hours. A radio
anchorwoman, 35, wrote, "I get up at 3 a.m., and go to bed by 7 p.m. No
social life, few friends, no chance to develop a romantic relationship."
"I work nights and weekends. I'm single. Enough said," said a TV
weatherman, 26.
If you think local celebrity status is a sure magnet for a prospective
spouse, think again. A TV anchorwoman, 34, told Stone, "Men seem
intimidated by my high-profile position and afraid to ask me out."
"Men are threatened by the work you do, your 'glamorous' job," echoed
a TV reporter/anchorwoman, 30.
