I suspect what you're hearing is either long path echo, or two transmitters
in different locations broadcasting the same programme. During the recent
disturbed conditions, I actually heard one broadcast where the long path
signal was louder than the short path, which made it sound like the pre-echo
you used to get on reel-to-reel tapes that had been in storage for a long
time.
