Parliamentary committee told Government to expedite
autonomy of Radio, TV

Dhaka, March 3: The government will take necessary
action regarding autonomy to the state-owned radio and
television on the basis of recommendations to be made
by a committee headed by the Information Secretary,
Parliament was told on Thursday.

The committee will look into how the state-owned
electronic media could be made more effective suiting
the needs of the time, Information Minister M Shamsul
Islam said, replying to a question appearing in the
name of Kazi Sirajul Islam (AL-Faridpur).

He said the previous Awami League government passed
two bills towards the end of their administration
providing for autonomy to the radio and the
television.

At that time, the President also gave his assent to
the bills, Bangladesh Betar Authority Act-2001 and
Bangladesh Television Authority Act-2001.

But, the Minister said, it appeared that those two
laws would not ensure the autonomy properly, and the
government constituted a Committee headed by the
Information Secretary to make recommendations to meet
the present requirement.
