AIR Chandigarh set to reach new heights

Chandigarh, July 16: With the All India Radio (AIR)?s
10-KW FM transmitter at Kasauli beginning to relay
programmes generated at the Chandigarh radio station,
the Chandigarh station is all set to reach new
heights.
This station, a commercial broadcast centre, has now
achieved almost the double of its existing
listenership and reaches nearly double of its previous
coverage area.
The Chandigarh radio station, which has been
transmitting its broadcast from a six-KW transmitter,
has so far been unable to reach major places in Punjab
and Haryana including Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Panipat,
Sonipat and Karnal. But not any longer.
The Kasauli transmitter, which was activated for
day-time operations on July 10 and started relaying
the programmes generated at the Chandigarh radio
station since then, has ensured that all these places
and a few more get to listen to the broadcast from
Chandigarh.
This means a potentially much higher revenue earning
from commercials by the Chandigarh radio station. The
station has been doing great in earning advertisement
revenue for over two years now. With some innovative
and interactive programmes planned and commissioned by
AIR Chandigarh?s Station Director Dr K.C. Dubey, the
station?s earnings reached Rs 1.51 crore last year.
??With our listenership and reach becoming nearly
double, we now expect a rise in our revenue earning,??
Dr Dubey told Newsline.
Perched atop the Kasauli Hill at a height of 1,860
metres above the sea level ? Chandigarh is at 330 mean
sea level ? the Kasauli transmitter no longer remains
shut down and idle during the daytime. It now relays
programmes generated at the Chandigarh radio station
from 5.53am to 12 noon and then relays Vividh Bharati
from 12 noon to 11.10pm.
With its height and higher capacity, the transmitter,
available on 107.2 MH frequency, has brought
Chandigarh station?s programmes close to more people
in a wider area. This transmitter had so far been
relaying only AIR?s national service at nights.
Following its day-time activation, the Kasauli
transmitter has already started receiving and relaying
the Chandigarh broadcast and the relay?s quality has
been very good. ??The quality would further improve
when an ISDN facility and STL line is permanently
established between the two stations,?? Dr Dubey said.
The Chandigarh transmitter?s coverage area is
practically a 50km air-distance radius, though it
reaches across 70km air-distance radius with the use
of antennae and shows a slight deterioration in sound
quality. The 10 KW Kasauli transmitter has capacity to
reach 100km air-distance.
Dr Dubey said a technical survey would be undertaken
soon to ascertain if the broadcast now reaches
far-flung areas, especially those on the Indo-Pakistan
border.
