[HCDX] Logs for Al Muick - 08 January
QTH: Kabul, Afghanistan
RX: WinRadio G303e
ANT: 200m Longwire/Randomwire
ACC: Palstar MW-550P Mediumwave Preselector
7110 ETHIOPIA, R. Ethiopia, heard 0330 on 08 Jan in listed Amharic w/OM
tk (possibly nx) and mentions of Sudan. Fair sigs. Beamed to EAf, so a few
watts leak over my way.
9505 IRAN, Vo Palestine, heard at 0410 on 08 Jan with AR tk and
interviews. Really strange audio, like it was run through a flanger or was
demod'ed SSB. Lots of millisecond breaks in the audio as well. Maybe one
of their feeds was acting up. Otherwise great sigs (hell, they're right
next door!).
11387USB SINGAPORE, Singapore VOLMET, heard at 0820 on 08 Jan w/EG wx
in synthesized OM voice. Creamed by Karachi VOLMET on late until 0822.
Weak sigs.
11387USB THAILAND, Bangkok VOLMET, heard at 0840 on 08 Jan w/EG wx in
synthesized YL voice. Fair sigs.
14410 TAIWAN, Sound of Hope, heard at 0700 on 08 Jan with ID and Mandarin
talk. No sign of jamming. Poor sigs, however with a lot of QSB.
Greetings all. Hope those of you in Europe affected by Russia's gas
problems are not suffering too badly. It's enough to make one think that
perhaps nuclear power wasn't such a bad idea after all! I was surprised at
the blast of harsh weather you have endured. It's also miserably cold here,
and for once I find it difficult to complain about my small room as it is
very well heated by my electric heater. My colleagues who snapped up all
the larger rooms with panoramic windows are suffering from heat loss through
those windows and their heaters are insufficient.
The VOLMETs were nice catches, and I decided to hunt for them after seeing
several of the nice QSL cards they offer. I collect QSLs from every type of
transmission - I don't confine myself to any one or two types of radio
communication. I also don't chase after awards (too much work!). As far as
UTE stations are concerned, does anyone know if the Klingenfuss books/CDs
provide the mailing addresses for the stations? I have been doing web
research until I find them, but I reckon there must be an easier way.
Ordered my WRTH 2009 and am patiently waiting for it. They offer no direct
courier shipment here to Afghanistan, so I had to have it airmailed to the
US where my forwarder will turn it around via DHL to me here. Such is life.
Once the ground dried out here, the harmonics and spurs from 1107 RTVA were
back with a vengeance, albeit somewhat reduced. We are now seeing some of
the same junk from the VoA/BBG xmtr on 1296. Since the masts and antennas
are so close and the products seen calculate out, I wonder if one or the
other tx'er is re-transmitting mixing products? If anyone has any contact
with these guys, please let them know. I have been trying via the US
Embassy, but am completely stonewalled.
And that's the state of things in Kabul!

"Resolve to serve no more, and you are at once freed. I do not ask
that you place hands upon the tyrant to topple him over, but simply
that you support him no longer; then you will behold him, like a great
Colossus whose pedestal has been pulled away, fall of his own weight
and break into pieces."
- Etienne de la Boetie, "The Politics of Obedience" (1553)
