Good Morning,

SAUDI ARABIA any strange ideas ?

New built Jeddah 250 kW shortwave site finnished on new location some two
years ago, when played Yugoslav CD music on their tests from
41 to 13 mband on same tremendous signals ...

but BSKSA came never real on air in past two years.

We had these two WOODEN REQUESTS at 1600-2100 UT
on HFCC group conference in A-13 yet:

Saudi Arabia to acquire DRM. Ready High Power 250 kW HF Transmitters.

Continental Electronics will supply a quantity of 4 each 250 kW HF DRM-
ready transmitters and associated equipment to the Saudi Arabia Ministry
of Information (MOI) through First Gulf Company of Riyadh. First Gulf will
construct an entirely new HF station where the transmitters, antennas, and
other equipment will be installed at the existing Al Khumra site outside
Jeddah. The Al Khumra station was constructed by Continental Electronics
and its civil contractor between 1978 and 1980, and the site presently
accommodates multiple 2-megawatt and 1-megawatt Medium Wave transmitters.

The new high-power HF DRM-ready transmitters will enhance the Saudi MOI's
digital broadcast capabilities and can reach targeted audiences at long
distance ranges with a clear, high quality signal. The DRM-ready
transmitters are similar to those recently supplied to Broadcast Australia
and to Radio-TV Malaysia, employing Transradio's latest DRM exciters with
its unique pre-correction features.

The transmitters will be delivered in the latter part of 2010 and the
station is planned to be fully operational by mid-2011.

meterbands is Jeddah site, see below.

ARS new refurbished Jeddah shortwave site. In A-12 from March 25, the new
250 kW Continental {and in co-operation by Continental and  RIZ Zagreb? too}

heard a lot of Serbian-Croatian folk music and 1000 Hertz tones in
May/June/July 2011 on various SW meter bands.

DRM: Jeddah Algwizain "Al Kurnayash South" site - more details. Not so long
ago we announced via the Continental Electronics website:

06-28-2010. Continental to Deliver 4 x 250 kW DRM HF Transmitters to
Saudi Arabia at the Algwizain "Al Kurnayash South" site. And that it would
be ready by Mid 2011.

Then: The DRM website announced in April:
DRM station ready in Saudi Arabia.

DRM member Continental Electronics has announced that a new shortwave DRM
capable station is now ready in Saudi Arabia. Three{+ 1 reserve, wb} 300 kW
SW transmitters, fully DRM ready, and a number of curtain antennas complete
this station, and are part of a comprehensive digitisation plan in the
country.

It would be nice if confirmed facts were known??
Probably 300 kW SW 419G transmitters fitted with Continental DRM Exciters?

Re recording: Yugoslav nationals say, music originate from "Slavonia -
in Eastern Croatia". Eike had noted also irregularities on Riyadh's
21 MHz bcasts this morning...

GH reported 17480 tone test / 17600 / 15400 / 15100 kHz is all same
origin.

Re UNID on 17600 + recording. I asked Dragan Lekic in Serbia and Zeljko
Crncic in Germany: listen recording of 17600 kHz.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 5, 2011)

Lieber Wolfgang, stimmt. Hier handelt es sich um Musik aus Slavonien
(Ostkroatien), die HRT oft spielt.
(Zeljko Crncic-D, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 5, 2011)

Some of them were identified as being Croatian by Peter Wilde on BrDXC-UK
ng list, so it might be testing a new tx:

"Playing the station into the SoundHound app on my iPod, it has cleverly
identified the last few songs played as Kninska Kraljica by Anica, Na
Obali by Jasna Zlokic (both Croatian) and Katar Khayre by Sherine
(Egyptian). A useful tool, if not giving a definitive answer in this case!
(via Mauno Ritola-FIN, June 2011)

unid 17600 kHz. Very strong signal on 17600 kHz since 1709 UT, 5 June tune
in, still continuing at 1855 UT.

Non-stop Croatian pop vocals ... vy pleasant uptempo mostly. Brief man
tkg, laughing, in Croatian, but was only a recorded intro to the song by
the male vocalist, seemingly a recording of a live performance recording,
not a radio annmt. Alerted to this by Jari, with a lot of additional info
via Wolfy in Germany.

Apparently has been heard, various frequencies in past week or so, similar
pgming. Interesting mystery.
(Don Jensen-USA, DXplorer June 5, 2011)

Balkan music today on 15100 kHz. This one is still on air at 1720 UT on
15100 kHz, and it's a very strong signal at my location in NW England
9+20db on peaks with some fading below S9.
(Noel R. Green-UK, dxld June 6, 2011)

Re Balkan music today on 15100 kHz. {Probably} RIZ Zagreb engineer plays
music originate from "Slavonia - Eastern Croatia" [Kninska Krajina],
tentatively from TX center in Saudi Arabia?

15099.998 kHz at 1735 UT on sdr remote units
S=9+15dB in Iceland,
S=9+40dB in Styria, Austria.
(wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 5, 2011)

17870 From 1241 tune-in past 1331 UT, continuous 1000 Hz tone on 17870,
but another station is underneath producing SAH. If pattern holds as on
previous frequencies, later on this may present Balkan/Croatian music.
(Glenn Hauser-OK-USA, dxld June 7, 2011)

Mystery test today on 17870 kHz.
This one tuned at 1500 UT and still(?) with test tone only. It is not as
strong as yesterday {June 6} - if still the same one - averaging S9 with
occasional peaks to 10dB over and fades to below S5. Similar reception
here from the great Jamahiriyah on 17725 kHz - now seemingly somewhat
overmodulated with studio echo in English.
(Noel R. Green-UK, dxld June 7, 2011)

Re: Mystery test today on 17870 kHz.
Yes, just switched on at 1515 UT June 7, and when checked 16 mb noted also
this 17870 kHz outlet, and two peaks on 17869 and 17871.000 kHz, when
heard via remote sdr unit Greece noted S=9+25 ... +30dB.
[S=+35dB in Vienna, same in Braunschweig; S=9+20dB in Holland]

My guess, RIZ engineers built up the new 250 kW Continentals at the Jeddah
site?

Re: Mystery test today on 17870 kHz. On July 9 at 1105 UT (tune in) 11850

(Sei-ichi Hasegawa-JPN, dxld June 9, 2011)

At present 1000 Hz tests on 11499 / 11500 / 11501 kHz, not much strong in
Austria, 1615 UT June 9. (wb, wwdxc BC-DX TopNews June 9, 2011)

UNIDENTIFIED UNID tone on 19000 kHz. Just wondered if the Mystery
Station is testing again today. Continous tone heard on 19000 kHz since
tune-in around 1230 UT. Will look out for Greek/Balkan-type music later,
as heard previously on various dates over the last couple of weeks on
17870 kHz and other frequencies.

[later] Checking back at 1330 UT, the tone is now heard on 18900 kHz.
(Alan Roe-UK-USA, dxld June 19, 2011)

I can receive the 1 kHz tone signal on 19000 kHz at 1300 UT in Japan.
(Sei-ichi Hasegawa-JPN, dxld June 19, 2011)

Re: UNID tone signal on 19000 / 18900 kHz had two peaks each of +/-1000 /
+/-2000 Hertz. Similar strong signal + BUZZ tone now from Saudi Arabia
17660 kHz.

Switched OFF at 13.47:10 UT. Re 18900 kHz, yes noted at 1325 UT on various
RFSPACE SDR IQ and Perseus remote units:

S=9+10dB in Iceland, S=5 in Florida
S=9+20 in Greece
S=9+10 in Ireland

Radio Riyadh is also a very strong signal here in NW England. I also found
it at the same time as Gilles and with a lengthy sports programme -
Sportsworld it's called with interviews etc.

At end of programme said "see you next Tuesday". Very up-beat western
'music' between items and at end. ID and programme title at 1943. Six pips
at 1945 - last one extended - then "News Brief at 1045"

Sounds like a rebroadcast of a domestic service. At 1948 a programme about
blues music, including Count Basie to begin with.

Went off abruptly at 2035 UTC.
Probably Saudi Arabia testing a new transmitter?

Back in the 1990s they used to have an English service to Europe on SW at
1600-2100 UTC - also a relay of their domestic service if I recall.
But in recent years they have only had English on SW to Africa.

Radio Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is currently on 15500 kHz with what seems to be
a
new SW broadcast in English - or maybe a test.
Heard here from tune-in since 1925 UTC with sports news, now at 1950 with
Jazz music. Massive signal (SIO 555 !) here.

(thanks to initial tip from Gilles Letourneau in Canada via dxld yg and
email from Alan Roe in Teddington who adds:
"HFCC shows 15500 registered via Issoudun 1700-2000 brokered by MBR.
Nothing in EiBi or AOKI.")

Hi Bruce
Thanks for the idea - but this was definitely a relay of Radio Riyadh
IDing as "Radio Riyadh English Service" and frequency of FM frequency
97.7 (& others) with a sports programme in English followed by a music
programming until abrupt off at 2035.

Since no one has cited my earlier report today of this new frequency (or
even read it?), here it is:

** SAUDI ARABIA. 15500, new frequency from BSKSA, first heard today April
28 at 1248 in Arabic vocal music with long pauses, reverent but unsounds
like normal Qur`an recitation; 1252 YL with Saudi ID; still on at 1304,
and 1358 past 1400. Good modulation, not // 17705. Maybe one of their new
transmitters? Not in Aoki or HFCC, 15500 an open frequency after
1200/1157. Fair signal while 17705 is JBA today. Sure I would have noticed
15500 if it were on, in daily chex for Bangladesh 15505 (Glenn Hauser, OK,

MBC has a listed frequency here (15500) but only until 2000 UT out of
Issouden. This transmission went off suddenly around 2039 today. I, too,
heard an ID for what sounded like "Radio Riyadh" at about 2009 after the
close of a documentary music program and then into more of a contemporary
pop music program with a DJ.

MBC is a Middle Eastern-based commercial broadcaster with several
television and radio outlets, including two in English--Panorama FM and
MBC FM.

On the other hand, BSKSA does have a Foreign Language network that has
English listed from 1600-2100. Two of the frequencies listed are Jeddah
on 96.2 FM and Riyadh on 97.7 FM. During the ID there was mention of two
FM frequencies for these cities, but I failed to make proper note. If
someone else did or recorded the broadcast, there may be a clue to proper
ID there.
