Re: [IRCA] The OLD K-BIG AM 740

PLEASE read the [IRCA] mailing list guidelines at http://www.ircaonline.org/guidelines.htm

I made that trip once, back in 1968. Flew from Long Beach in an Otter, landing on the almost vertical air strip on the side (or so it looked) of the mountain. Flew back in a seaplane. Quite an experience, as was the trip down the mountainside in the local shuttle car.

Lewis (who later did What's my line and other TV shows) had to fly into work from Long Beach each morning. If he was late -- because of weather , etc, K-BIG AM would not sign on the air -- until someone got to Avalon. About 1962 -- an STL link and double hop from Avalon to Long Beach (Signal Hill) and onto Los Angeles -- was built. The signal is Directional -- more towards Orange County -- then to LA.
