She studied Maori as an adult and is now a fluent speaker, encouraging other musicians, writers and broadcasters to do the same. Her recent, self-produced album Puaawai is the first in which her many languages are fully explored, from Maori to the language of literature. Its release coincides with the publication of her first book of poetry in New Zealand and the US.
