[Swprograms] Podding Along - Issue 43

Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while âpower walkingâ (most) every other day. The âartâ of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by âpodding alongâ my mind gets something to do along with my body. Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating programâs web site, most programs are made available through any number of other amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn. Hereâs a small sample:

âDonna Edwardsâ
HARDtalk - BBC World Service
From Washington, HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur talks to Congresswoman Donna Edwards. She's a radical voice in the Democratic Party and is now running for a seat in the senate. But is America ready for genuinely left-wing politics? (30â)

âNapoleonâs Legend â
LATE NIGHT LIVE - ABC Radio National
He took control of France in 1799 at the age of thirty following a coup of the Directory â the name given to the regime which had held power after the fall of Robespierre. It had taken Napoleon barely three years to rise from political obscurity to become the so-called saviour of France; a leader who convinced almost everyone to âDespair of Relying on Yourselves and Rely Only on Meâ. As biographer Philip Dwyer writes: âBonaparte succeeded where other revolutionary governments did not because he deployed larger numbers of regular troops to quash resistance.........and of course Bonaparte knew how to take the credit for all these successes.â This was just after the successful coup, and yet despite the wars, and his fall from grace, Bonaparte remains one of the worldâs most enduring figures. In fact itâs estimated that over 70,000 books have been written about Napoleon since his death in 1821. (54â)
