** CANADA [and non]. Another huge sporadic E FM DX opening July 4!
Already in progress when I join at 1507 UT. DXMAP showed MUF spikes
around 150 MHz, and multiple paths across central/eastern US almost
solid red! A major nexus around Chicago but does not account for my
western Canada catches.
I`m DXing the old-fashioned way which I find quite enjoyable and
sufficient. All logs are on my own receiver in real time; no mass
recording of entire band to sift thru later, nor any recording; the
only thing I wish I had is RDS, lacking from my 2004 Nissan Sentra
caradio. I recently tried to get some RDS by handling the DX-398 in
the car, but it slipped and broke the antenna! More or less repaired
now.
No internet access during the sessions, but plenty later as I
research. No antenna manipulation, as it`s just the vertical on the
fender - and of course, minimal antenna gain. I scribble copious notes
and can read most of them later. All times and dates strictly UT. This
session is in a way *too much* DX - almost all frequencies have at
least two DX stations vying for capture, back and forth, and/or
spoiler fringers. Log items under a single heading may well concern
more than one station, can`t tell them apart, marked CCI. How do these
affect my totals? Altho I was once a Statistics Editor, I no longer
care, which frees me from competition with anyone or myself. I am more
interested in quality than quantity of logs : each one a potential
learning experience. PTA = probable target area. Distances at end of
each item are km/statute miles, city-to-city, so approx., not
site-to-site, from distancefromto.net To save time & trouble, I`ll not
repeat those for same stations further down
Friday July 4, 2025:
87.7+ at 1507 start: sports talk about football in English: obviously
one of those LP TV stations pretending to be FM radio, and probably
really on 87.74, 87.75 or 87.76 MHz, but the caradio of course cannot
tune that finely. On a hunch I compare it to my local 1640 KZLS and
find it matches, but not synch. Unlike the `real` FM stations, this
one never has any QRM, and spot chex later find it still there for
quite a while, but I never hear an ID or local ads. WTFDA FMDB has
only 14 -LD stations on ``87.7`` of which only one is sports, and Fox,
and in the PTA as soon becomes evident. In fact there are no others in
NE USA except for NYC:
WQSE-LD Syracuse NY 2.75 kW -65 m = BELOW average terrain making this
catch all the sweeter. Its slogan is supposedly `Fox Sports 92.5 &
1490``, i.e. WOLF. Since they have a real FM on 92.5, not clear why
they need 87.7+. I wonder what video one could see 4.5 MHz lower?
1993/1239
{After an earlier post of this full report on the WTFDA FM list, a
reply:
``Glenn, It's pronounced "Honey - Oy". It would only mention that at
ID time, otherwise covers the Rochester market.
Typo, I think, WOLF is 92.1 not 92.5. I had it today overriding WYSL
92.1 with a solid HD signal from the Syracuse area. Good tropo to the
east today from here. WCNY 91.3 Syracuse with a solid HD signal,
usually blocked by WXXO 91.5 in Rochester. WXXI is now on 105.9. They
felt that WXXI was more of a news brand when they acquired 105.9, so
WXXO is now the classical. WXXI 1370 still exists, but I bet they
unload it at some point. It's probably not worth much to sell, so I
expect more religious saturation.
I also had Thunder Country 93.5 as a last gasp in the opening around
1830z. Actually the last gasp was Sidney MT 93.1. A relog, but maybe
my furthest single hop FM signal. I think your logic on the NY
stations is sound.
My report for July 4 will include short hop KY, long hop MT, but
mostly TN LA TX OK KS MO MN. I recorded as I tuned around. Have to
review that. 5 hours of recordings, 2 of which were 90.9 recorded
while I was attending an anti-fuehrer protest in Batavia. Jim Renfrew,

93.1 at 1516: ``93-Q.com``; CCI. Fortune Valley Golf Club and 5 others
in NY for a single ticket? Big Lots ad, Oswego; McGuire? Automotive.
Oswego is near Syracuse on Lake Ontario. And the only full power
non-translator in NY on 93.1 is: WNTQ, Syracuse, 97.0 kW, 201 m, 93 Q
or 93Q. Fortune Valley Golf Club gets no hits in NY or elsewhere tho
there are Fortune Valley otherthings along the Hudson and in Colorado.
And a Fortune something in Tulsa but this is not 92.9! 1993/1239
92.9 at 1521: ad mentions Ithaca, Canandaigua, Home Depot special
buys, `hard` ice tea, i.e. with alcohol; Buffalo, Niagara Falls; 1524
Misty City Music Festival; ``Buffalo`s Real Rock, 92-9 WBUF``. Ithaca
is SSW of Syracuse, Canandaigua WSW of Syracuse, further from Buffalo.
N.F. of course is near Buffalo. Is there another 92.9 besides WBUF?
Not really, a religious translator in Rochester is closest. 1775/1103
94.1 at 1527: classical, $ , recognized as ``Scheherazade`` by
Rimsky-Korsakov, a tremendously beautiful piece. Only 3 USA format
hits, translators or lowpower in OR, WA, WY. I bet it`s CBC! It`s
Undefined, Variety, CBC Music, but no mention of classical! CBL-FM
Toronto 38 kW, 420 m. 1764/1096
94.5 at 1528: hard rock, $ ; 1531 Y-94, iHeart radio app plug. Hits in
slogan field only as Y 94 with a space, altho Y94 elsewhere for this
entry only in the PTA:
WYYY Syracuse NY 100 kW, 198 m, format AC.
91.5 at 1534: $ classical, CCI with KSNS KS mono. Lots of those in
USA, but in NY only two: WXXO Rochester 45 kW, 134 m, a.k.a. WXXI-FM
[?] in PTA, and WSQX-FM Binghamton 3.5 kW, 116 m with Classical 24.
Surely Rochester. How about ON? Two CBCs in Orillia and Ottawa, but
R1, not Music. 1882/1169 {see Renfrew comment above}
92.9 at 1541: Buffalo, siding & roofing ad, CCI, so WBUF again.
92.9 at 1543: ``Mix 92.9`` CCI to WBUF. Only two full-powers in NAm:
WJXA Nashville, ``Mix 92-9`` with a dash, and KYYY Bismarck ND, Mix
``92.9`` with the point: and based on later logs, ND is also
propagating! 100 kW, 301 m, AC 1182/735
92.9 at 1546: CCI to Bismarck, ``Star 92.9`` - not San Angelo TX but:
WEZF Burlington VT, 46 kW, 828 m, Hot AC -- good! Vermont rare to here

94.5 at 1553: WYYY again: ads for Burdicks Family Dealerships, iHeart,

claude.com, AI Asst, Y94.
95.1 at 1556: Stellar Roofing in western NY. Only NY non-translator is
WAIO Honeoye Falls, 50 kW, 146 m. Honeoye Falls is just S of
Rochester; how pronounced? 1877/1166 {see Renfrew reply above}
95.1 at 1558: WSTX Mackinaw City ID, CCI, ``Rhinestone Cowboy`` Or so
I thought: the real WSTX-FM is on 100.3 in Christiansted VI, as in St
Croix!
So now I have to look thru the 213 entries for USA in the WTFDA DB,
for similar calls or location or station relayed: NO obvious hits
among:
WSSX-FM CHARLESTON SC
WXFX PRATTVILLE AL
WFKS MELBOURNE FL
WSGX-LP EAST BATON ROUGE LA
or maybe 100.3 in VI ID appeared in same city?
WJKC CHRISTIANSTED VI
But looking at 3 listings for Mackinaw City MI we bingo!
WSBX 94.5 MACKINAW CITY MI 50 kW 110 m CLASSIC HITS BRIDGE FM -
EVERYTHING CLASSIC // WUPF 95.1 -- so it`s WUPF I am hearing? But it`s
on 107.3!
WUPF 107.3 POWERS MI 50.0 kW 130.0 m CLASSIC ROCK EAGLE 107.3 FM
So then I look at all the 95.1s in MI, really bingo now!
WUPN 95.1 PARADISE MI 25.0 kW 71.0 m CLASSIC HITS BRIDGE FM -
EVERYTHING CLASSIC // WSBX 94.5
And there is also a WUPN-FM1 on 95.1, 0.25 kW in Sault Ste Marie MI.
How convoluted. UPN no doubt alludes to Upper Peninsula. I was not
getting relay relationships since not in the RELAY OF field, but
rather in the REMARX - and see further logs of BRIDGE FM: 1558/968

WTFDA FMDB does not cover news/network affiliations, unlike the NRC AM

stations to guess at.
98.3 at 1704: Canadian news, Calgary Stampede, CBC news outro, ``In

88.1 at 1709: French Canadian vs two Okies. Surely along with 98.3,
CBC in Winnipeg which is *not* CBWF, but CKSB-10-FM, relay of CKSB

91.5 at 1728: CCI in French, ``positive``. Only 5 in Canada, all CBC,
