Fortunately, Asian propagation was quite favourable into Masset today to
witness the final shut down of the NHK Radio 2 network. All the
frequencies were noted, but I stuck with 774 JOUB Akita with 500 kW. The
final program was an Arabic lesson right up to 15:00 UTC. At the top of
the hour, they began their final 5 minutes with what sounded like some
interviews with listeners. Then at exactly 15:05, they gave for the final
time the NHK Radio 2 ID and call letters, in this case JOUB, and instead of
the lovely sign off routine afterwards, only dead air. A sad day for me,
personally, as this network has been like an old friend, with language
lessons, and even more important, earthquake and tsunami warnings in
English which over the years I heard on a number of occasions, and directly
impacted me at my oceanfront cottage in Masset, BC. As I type this at
15:18 UTC, the open carrier continues, although an hour now after local
sunrise, the signal is fading. Goodbye to an old friend, but with change,
new opportunities arise! 73, Walt
