Glenn Hauser logs March 13-14, 2019

Friday, March 15 2019

** CUBA. 9720, Wed March 13 at 2246, RHC is in Kriyol! today, while
yesterday March 13 this semihour was in Brazuguese, preceded by French
at 2200. But now not // 5040 which is in Spanish // 15370 (and 15730
is off). At 2259 Mar 13, 9720 is already opening the hour in English.
Something`s always wrong at RHC. Different lineup next day: see below
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 6000 suptorted // 6165 adequate, March 14 at 0027, RHC
English is indeed on an hour previous to the *0100 UT start for the
past year. First time I had checked it since March 10; but not on 5040
which has shifted an hour earlier only. So the N American service can
run 7 hours between 00 and 07, but not necessarily on all frequencies.

The 0600 hour never seems to have the same characteristics. On March
14: 6165 has undermodulated RHC English mixing about equally with weak
NHK Arabic via FRANCE, adding up to S9+10; 6100 is undermod but clear;
6060 is OK; 6000 & 5040 are both off. Something`s always wrong at RHC
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA. 9720, what`s happening March 14 with RHC`s so-called African
service? At 2221 Spanish music is playing, but not // Spanish service
on 9640, etc. 9730 at 2225, French news all about Brexit; 2229
resounding IS and into Kriyol sign-on. By 2307 check, 9720 is in
English --- so that hour is becoming reliable, but you never know
which languages will inhabit the previous hour. Something`s always
wrong at RHC.

As for other frequencies: 15730, March 14 at 2225, S7-S9 of dead-air
warmup, then IS version curtailing the resounding of the notes,
modulation OK, but at 2230 into suptorted French; wiggle that
patchcord! At 2307 check this frequency is in suptorted Kriyol.
Something`s always wrong at RHC.

11700, March 14 at 2230, theme and opening Portuguese/Brazuguese on
this frequency only.

After 2307 check, all these are in Spanish with music: 9535, 9640,
11670, 11700-distorted, 11760, 11840 & 11830/11850 spurs. Different
Spanish talk on 11950 // 6000 for Mesa Redonda TV soundtrack. 15370 is
now off; 5040 in English (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** CUBA [non]. 7340, surprise fourth frequency for R. MartÃ,
presumably Greenville-B, is off the air by 2049 UT March 13 check,
last noted here at 1842. Not heard at all next day March 14 at various
chex between 1422, 1506 and 1723, plus a few later. Must have been a
test (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** GERMANY. 11730, March 14 at 1425, upbeat pop music or praise? S3-
S4, 1430 AWR English ID and fading next language? Listed Mandarin, 250
kW, 75 degrees from Nauen. Axually the entire hour is supposed to be
(Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** MADAGASCAR. 11965, March 14 at 1902, Mideast music sounds secular,
but since it`s Madagascar World Voice, could it really be Christian?
Not necessarily; later caught ending of hour in Arabic to 1957:10*.

11965, March 14 at 2017 recheck, now in English it`s noticeably
stronger tho no S-meter on the caradio; definitely Christian in sermon
about David. There is a 60-degree shift in azimuth between the two
hours, 355 to 295 degrees, by swapping 30 degree slews of the #218
antenna, the latter certainly more favorable for us.

BTW, the founder of World Christian Broadcasting has died, as
mentioned starting World of Radio 1973 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST) Viz.:

Maurice Hall, founder of World Christian Broadcasting, dies at 99
The Christian Chronicle By Erik Tryggestad
Franklin, Tenn.-based World Christian Broadcasting reports:

Maurice Hall, whose idea and vision led to the founding of World
Christian Broadcasting, died March 8 at his home in California, three
days after his 99th birthday.

âIt was his dreams during World War II that made World Christian
Broadcasting possible,â said president and CEO Andy Baker.

A native of Tennessee Colony, Texas, Hall served in the U.S. Army and
was involved in setting up and shipping shortwave radio equipment for
President Franklin D. Rooseveltâs use at Yalta in 1945. He came up
with the idea of transmitting Gospel messages all over the world via
shortwave radio.

Hallâs dream became a reality in 1983, when station KNLS in Anchor
Point, AK, signed on the air. The station has been broadcasting since,
and now, World Christian Broadcasting also operates Madagascar World
Voice. The two stations blanket the globe with Gospel messages and
information in several languages.

In addition to his work with World Christian Broadcasting, Hall served
as a minister to several churches and missionary to the Philippines,
Vietnam, and elsewhere.

Hallâs survivors include his sons, James and Ron. His wife, Marie, and
their son, Bill, preceded him in death.

See more information on Hallâs legacy here:

(via Mike Terry, March 10, WOR iog via WORLD OF RADIO 1973, DXLD)

** MALI. 5995, March 14 at 0603, still no signal from ORTM`s morning
broadcast scheduled from 0555, unlike audibility in the evening. At
least no ACI from 6000 Cuba which is off this time; but on 5990 there
is stray pulse jamming vs nothing (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING
DIGEST)

** NIGERIA [and non]. 9689.93, March 13 at 2051, low-audible-het to
9690.00 REE SPAIN, and careful LSB tuning audiblizes some separable
music from Voice of Nigeria. If they can`t get VON off their
frequency, or vice versa, if they even realize there is a problem, REE
doesn`t have enough flexibility to zero-beat it, at least getting rid
of the het. VON should be finished by 2100 clearing for the rest of
REE (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA. 1610, March 14 at 2007 UT, NOAA Weather Radio is JBA into
caradio on west side of Enid; no doubt WQCL720, Jet OK, near Great
Salt Plains, relaying Wichita NWS; lots of high winds reported. Hard
to catch locations mentioned, but one was Wellington near there, also
OKC (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 101.5, March 14 at 1905, 1958 UT and later
chex, no signal at all from KOCD Okeene, after at least 9 days of
cutting off and on twice every minute; so now either the transmitter
has collapsed completely on its own, or HQ has decided to make it a
100% failure instead of only 78%.

101.5, however, March 14 at 1958 UT as I am straining to hear anything
from KOCD on caradio in western Enid, instead there is a very weak
signal in Spanish mentioning Kansas, i.e. KSMM, 100 kW from Liberal,
which I have heard before KOCD glommed onto 101.5 much closer to here
than 281 km = 174 miles. Welcome back!

101.5, March 14 at 1958.5 UT, a bit of music for a second or less,
which I think was a meteor burst rather than KOCD (Glenn Hauser, Enid,
DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SAO TOME. 9550, March 14 at 0616, S2-S3 of English, some with
African accent, one of few stations on band. This hour only is VOA
Pinheira, an obscure frequency; much weaker than 7345 BBC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** SPAIN. 9690: see NIGERIA [and non].

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 1973 monitoring: confirmed
Wednesday March 13 at time-shifted 2100 on WRMI 9955 --- but a hymn
has been playing at 2059, no ID, then cut to WOR playback already in
progress, picking up at ``--73. . .``, good S9 signal; and also on
WBCQ 7490.2, about 6 seconds later at much weaker S5-S7.

Also confirmed UT Thursday March 14 at 0000 on WRMI 7730, VG; also
again at 0100 on WRMI 7780, VP. Next:

** U S A. 7780, Thursday March 14 after 2100, WRMI is JBA but it`s not
me, despite long-standing skedgrid entry for WORLD OF RADIO now. By
2125 improved to VP so I can recognize it`s VORW as John is mostly
talking instead of musicking. The WRMI frequency grid for 7780 shows
21-22 UT as ``RAE in German (VORW Thursday)``. This is very strange,
to shove RAE German aside one of the days it is on, and of course it
is not on Saturday or Sunday anyway, but this is in fact what is being
done; despite the System D program skedgrid below which claims WOR is
on 7780 at 2100-2130 and then Wavescan at 2130-2200 on Thursdays ---
and both also on 5950, which is another anomaly but I can`t detect
what`s really on there today, as by 2153 it is only JBA, with Oldies
or Argentina? Furthermore, the System G schedule (in ET, not UT) now
shows Argentina in Italian M-F including Thursday at 5-6 pm on 7780
(and 9395).

I have been rechecking to redeconfirm that WOR is NOT airing as has
been on this contradictory schedule for months. Furthermore, WOR is
shown at same time and frequencies Wednesdays at 2100, equally
unlikely, but I missed checking yesterday; that now coincides with a
time WOR really airs on 9955 (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. 17775, March 14 at 2047, praise music in Spanish and YL
sermonettes, VG signal on caradio, while earlier today KVOH was as
usual a JBA carrier at best. Probably some HF sporadic E brought it
in; and/or KVOH has their new transmitter going. Of course on this rig
I could not measure whether it was 11 Hz off-frequency-minus as usual
from the old transmitter (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

** U S A. Re: Vietnamese on KGOW [1560] and maybe KBXD [1480], Stephen
Luce, Houston TX replies on the WOR iog:

``Glenn, The service is called Viet Radio, based here in Houston. They
also have a sister TV station, VIETV on KTBU 55.5. I discovered that
the radio station's morning show is simulcast on the TV station with
in-studio cameras. Viet Radio has a website
http://vietradio.com/
which autolaunches a stream of the radio station, useful for
comparison to what you are hearing on 1560 and perhaps 1480.

Was not aware of any KGOW STA for ND at night, but it is not a station
I give much attention, not being the target demographic`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9985+, March 14 at *1458.5, open carrier on at S2-S3,
much weaker than yesterday, 1500 JBA modulation, i.e. R. Free Asia in
Korean, supposedly Saipan but not confirmed. Today by comparison, 9975
in Korean at 1501 is S5-S9 with hum but just barely modulated. We know
this one is 345 degrees from PALAU with Nippon no Kaze.

If 9985 is Philippines as I posited yesterday on 21 degree beam toward
DPRK and South Carolina, why is it now so much weaker than Palau
beamed away from us? At 15 UT, the K index is 3 and path from Palau to
Enid goes further south peaking about latitude 49 over north Pacific,
while Tinang approaches the auroral zone up to approx. 57 north around
Kodiak island on the southern edge of Alaska mainland; which could
account for the difference (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)

UNIDENTIFIED. 101.3, March 14 at 1959 after checking for KOCD 101.5,
find a stronger open carrier here, where we normally have a fringe
signal from 100 kW KFDI Wichita. Hard to believe such a station would
suffer dead air, so maybe an RF feeder from a nearby car in the
larking pot; I meant to check it when driving away but distracted by
something else (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
