The US-based Reform Party of Syria radio station Radio Free Syria started
Arabic-language broadcasts at 1800 UT on 20 June 2004, on 13650 kHz.

The station came on the air abruptly, "crash starting" at 1800 UT with mx
and slogans, identifing as Voice of Free Syria (Sawt al-Suriya al-Hurr).

This was followed by a 10-minute nx bulletin and commentary. The rest of
the programme consisted of a variety of Western and Arabic mx interspersed
with slogans by both male and female announcers. An Arabic-language
commentary was heard between 1838 and 1852 UT, with the station closing
abruptly at 1859 UT.

Bearings taken on this txion show that the broadcast may originate from
facilities near Koeln, Germany. In the minute before Radio Free Syria came
on the air, a brief clip of the opening of the Radio Free Syria / Sawt al-
Suriya al-Hurr programme was heard on the same frequency, followed by
several seconds of Deutsche Welle before the programme "crash started" at
1800 UTC.

My reception at 1800 UT Sunday night on 13650 kHz was similar to what I
hear on the two mp3 recordings. Their signal was peaking to about 5 on the
power meter and I didn't have too many problems with adjacent CRI
13640 kHz. In the annmts all I could pick out was a word sounding like
"Thowrah".

BTW - was the "echo" I heard on both recordings actual or due to computer
"processing" of the recordings? I didn't notice it.

I noted the carrier come on but didn't hear any tones before the broadcast
started. (Noel R. Green-UK, BC-DX June 21, 2004)

provide democratic Syrians from all over the world the possibility of
addressing Syrians inside Syria with live talk shows.

Furthermore, the Reform Party of Syria intends to allocate part of the
programming to other democratic parties, human rights groups, and
organizations that promote civic societies and the rule of law. The Syrian

Radio Free Syria to Break Assad's Media Monopoly.

Radio Free Syria will hit the airwaves this weekend, Clandestine Radio
Watch (CRW) has learned, marking the first phase of a sophisticated media
campaign to chip away at the Ba'ath Party regime in Damascus and to
promote democracy and tolerance.

The station's inaugural broadcast will occur on June 20, 2004, and air
thereafter on Sundays at 1800 UTC on 13650 kHz.

Sources within the Reform Party of Syria, which built the station, tell
CRW that the schedule is planned to expand after a period of testing.

Although the sources would not confirm the location of the tx reports in
the Israeli press point to a facility in Cyprus[sic] allegedly funded by
Washington. "We are not funded by anyone," one source close to the
station's operations said. "Radio Free Syria is being built independently
with the support of Syrian businessmen and women who want openess and
peace."

Radio Free Syria will be the first station run by Syrians, themselves,
that promotes democracy, freedom of conscience and respect for minority
and human rights. Its planners expect this message to serve as a burst of
fresh air for their target audience, which is subjected to state-run
propaganda that serves to bolster the ruling Ba'ath Party as well as
Islamist programming preaching intolerance broadcast by such outlets as
The Arabic Radio and Hezbollah's TV and radio stations. Live roundtable
discussions are planned as well as comedy and entertainment that all
listeners can enjoy - Muslims, Christians, Arabs, Kurds and Assyrians.

"This is just the first phase," a planner said. "The regime's feet is
about to be put into the fire."

Listeners are welcome to contact the station by e-mail

The station also has a Web site that contains programming that can be

July 2004
Program started with two IDs, one by an OM and another one by YL,m "Sout
Souyria Alhurra, with mxal break in the background of a famous song by the
Egyptian/French singer Dalida "Salma Ya Slama" which means we got back
again.

Followed by an OM with the freq and time of txion.

1805 UT, Announcement "the Reform Party of Syria will grant a 100.000 USD
for any Syrian citizen who would help in locating the mass Weapon
destruction locations in Syria; all the details will be dealt with in
confidentiality! ID by YL

1810, a program called Urgent Message - reading what supposed to be a
message by a Syrian citizen to the Syrian President Dr. Bashaar Al Assad
critisizing the current situation in Syria.

1821, ID by a YL followed by a very famous song by a Syrian singer
Sabah Fakhry.

1823, ID by an OM followed by a report about the role of the opposition
parties in Syria time being, critisizing the Ba'ath party and its leaders,
also mentioning the opposition group The Islamic brotherhood, and the
dictatorship of the Syrian regime.

1827, a Musical break, followed by another ID by an OM. 1830 UT, a man
shouting "a very famous man" and a lady asking "who" it turned out to be a
program talking about the profile of "Jameel Al-Assad", the brother of
the late Syrian president Hafez Al-Assad and his role in the corruption
taking place now in Syria.

1840, an OM introducing an Assyrian lang song. 1845 UT, an OM with the
mail bag program called "Menkom wa Lakom", that's from/to you welcoming
the listeners and all their Q about the radio station and he promised to
increase the time of this within the coming weeks.

The listeners' Q were answered by Mr. Malek Assaf, the director of Radio
Free Syria, i.e., where is the HQ of the Reform party; a fax from a Syrian
who wants to work as a reporter for Radio Free Syria, a fax by a listener
who's criticizing the station and its goals and programs, and at last a
fax by a Syrian living in Berlin asking about the slogan of the station,
"Syria is only for the Syrians". By the end of the program the man gave
the fax and telephone numbers of the station and the e-mail.

1850 UT, ID by a YL followed by a song by the Lebanese singer Fayrouz.
1853, a repeat of the annt of the 100.000 USD reward to reveal the places
of the MWD in Syria. 1855, a man reading Poem with Musical breaks.
1857 UT, an OM with thanks to all those who participated in editing and
directing this program mentioning the names of the editors of the program.

1859, a YL "with this we have come to the end of our txion"; OM "we hope
you enjoyed it and looking forward to meeting you again" with mx in the
back ground.

The tx went off the air. Well, it sounded like the other Syrian opposition
radio "Arabic radio" when it comes to the directing of the programs and
the usage of all these mxal breaks. They had the programs of this week's
txion and the previous ones on
<http://www.radiofreesyria.org/Programs/rfs_friends.htm>

I checked the first txion as I was away and couldn't hear it and I found
that they announced the assassination of the Syrian President;

also they had a coded message "to the people, the meeting will be
in the 7 floors building, main entrance is ONLY from the fourth gate. End"

13650 [SYRIA non] Here's a report about Radio Free Syria's txion on [Sun]
Aug 22 [13650 kHz via Juelich Germany]. It was edited by a new DXer from
Egypt. I taught her some stuff about DXing as I'm trying to promote our
hobby, that's her first report ever, so I'd be really grateful if you
accept to publish it. That'd make her very happy. Her nickname is
X-Blue Berry as girls here don't like to reveal their real names culture
differences!

Here's her report:

18:13 OM was reading the interior Syrian news.

18:20 OM announced the start of a program, "More than one point of view"
("Akthar men wagehat nazar" in Arabic); He said it's going to be repeated
again next Friday at 9:00 Damascus local time!! Syrians living outside
Syria were discussing their points of views regarding the political
situation in Syria.

18:31 the same OM announced the end of the program (guess his name is Rami
Abd el Rahman)

18:32 OM announced the repetition of the program again next Friday!!!

18:33 YL said "Sout Soria el Hora" with a song at the background, then
"soria el Hora"

18:34 OM announced the start of another program called "lekaa el esboo"
that's "This Week's Meeting" this week the president of the Reform Party
in Syria, Mr. Faried El Ghaderi, was the guest. They were discussing some
questions sent to the program by Syrians living inside and outside Syria
about the current Syrian affairs

18:40 the fading and distortion increased.

18:56 the OM announced the end of the show, and Mr. Faried promised to
have another episode recorded to the station. Then another OM announced
end of txion with mx at the background.
He said the freq 13650 kHz, fax #: 00493069088573
and tel#: 00359899812923
and email: <admin -at- radiofreesyria.net>

18:58 another OM wished we'd enjoyed today's material and goodbye.

Re Radio Free Syria ... I checked the web site of the reform party
<www.reformsyria.net> and noticed that there's a link for Radio Free
Syria, but the link (under construction as they said) so I emailed Mr.
Malek Assaf in arabic telling him that I'm an Egyptian dxer since 1985 and
I'd like to get more info about the station to spread the word about the
station. Asking about the truth about the start of the txion on 1st of
April, are they using MW or SW tx, which freq used do they use any txs
from via Cyprus ... and here's what I got from him:

Dear xx,
hi, the test txion started and within a few days the audio stream on the
site will be Ok, the station covers Syria and some of the neighboring
countries of Syria. will keep you posted with more nx later. B.rgds

so as you can see...no specific answer was given..but that part of "the
station is covering Syria and some of the neighboring country is a bit
interesting..does this mean that they have MW TX ?

I sent him another e mail asking about the times and freq persistence
....YES! but hope he replies soon.

Farid al-Ghadiri, leader of the US-based Syrian al-Islah [Reform] Party,
yesterday announced that Radio Free Syria will begin txions tomorrow,
31 March, at the latest, to both Syria and Lebanon. In a statement posted
on the party's web site, Al-Ghadiri said that the radio, "which is
funded by Syrian businessmen", will begin txion from Cyprus[sic ?].

The radio carries the same name as the Radio Free Iraq, which is funded by
the US Govt, though Al-Ghadiri insists he is innocent of receiving foreign
funds for the radio. US authorities declined to comment on Al-Ghadiri's
activities and denied any connection to the radio despite reports on a
meeting between Al-Ghadiri and a State Department official. Asked by
Al-Safir to comment on the report, Steve Sish [as transliterated], head
of the Syria, Lebanon Desk at the State Department, refused to comment.

On its web site on the Internet, Radio Free Syria says that one of its
objectives is to emphasize "the benefits of democracy and free
expression" and "to prove the honest intentions of US policy in the
Middle East and stress the importance of dispensing with the culture of
violence".

Hi, I got the following from the Reform Party of Syria:

Reform Party of Syria Press Release.
Reform Party Launches Radio Free Syria.
WASHINGTON, April 6, 2004 / Press Release/
The Reform Party of Syria announced today the start of its Radio Free
Syria cybercast in Arabic on a test basis. Real broadcast will air shortly
after the test period ends. One can listen to the programming on - failure
- and soon on - failure - .

The intent of Radio Free Syria is to educate the Syrian public on issues
of democracy, freedom, and cessation of violence. RFS will be entertaining
and educational to appeal to a large cross section of Syrians. According
to the CIA fact book, Syria boasts about 4.15 million radios by 1997
giving RFS the largest medium to communicate.

In the programming line-up, RFS will broadcast nx on Syria and Lebanon on
a daily basis. RFS will also air special cynical and humorous shows and a
new play, written by one of the foremost Syrian play writers, to start in
the real live broadcast. The "yet-to-be-named" play will address the
misery of the Syrian people in contrast with the corruption of the Assad
regime.

RFS is managed by a team of 32 people, some of whom are inside Syria
providing Cyprus operations with the latest news.

One of the missions of Radio Free Syria is to consolidate the reformists
inside Syria with the reformists pressuring the regime from outside and to
build on the concept of the Syrian Democratic Coalition that met in
Washington DC on September of 2003. The Syrian Democratic Coalition goals
are to build a "New Syria" with all Syrian parties and ideologies
represented in a decorum of non-violence under a real democracy.

Forward email - This email was sent to - failure -,

I checked the site - failure - and as soon as you get there you'll hear an
ID of the station (Sout Syria Alhurra) - Voice of Free Syria repated bu an
OM and YL saying today and everyday around that time (no time mentioned)
you'll hear us Sout Syria Alhurra.

The content of the Page is prerecorded programs about some of the Ba'ath
Party members in MP3 format, one is talking about the ex Syrian president
Hafez Al Assad, and another one is about his brother ref'aat Al Assad that
program is called ID card, it's edited by Malek Assaf (I got an e mail
from him before in Arabic with a promise to send me more details about
RFS) and the program is presented by a YL called Dina Karam.

According to their text above the word Cyprus operations was a bit catchy
which means that the studios or the TX is going to be in Cyprus. and as
usual no freq giving yet.

hopefully more to come soon about that one.

Is Bashar Al-Assad a dictator? For sure. Is it fair to portray him as a
brutal mass murderer, who is killing countless of his fellow citizens?
No, not at all.

Assad is and has been for a long time, an anti-American. A non-member of
the WTO. Against US expansion, against US intervention. A semi-secular
leader, close to radical Islamist nations aligned with the US like Qatar
and Saudi Arabia.

The US has no doubt been wanting to get rid of the Syrian regime for some
time, and with the Arab spring overly painting him as a particularly brutal
dictator in order to support the revolution that they thought would topple
him seemed like a good idea.

However, the revolution was a total failure, he retained most of the
support of the Syrians, but it’s hard to take back a stance. So the US
cannot go out and back down on the narrative on al-Assad, they have to
double down, to avoid losing face. This is the reason for Assad-must-go. At
least I think it’s a primary reason.

Other reasons could pertain to the control of oil in Syria, which has
strong arguments for it as well, especially now that the US backed SDF is
going out of their way to “liberate” the oil fields in eastern Syria.

I won't go into details on how the classified US weapons supply and
training program of the CIA, called Timber Sycamore, armed and financed
radical jihadists groups, most of whom had close ties with Al-Qaeda and the
Islamic State, just in order to topple the Syrian government.

As mentioned in passing in a RUS-DX item, English from Damascus is among
several languages available via:

The only `labeling` of which language is which is the language of the day
of week for each program. English lasts 2 hours starting with satellite
info, program previews. After more than 5 minutes, the news finally
starts.
Don't forget that Syria is ruled by a brutal dictatorship killing or
exiling countless citizens.

We remember when Damascus Radio was on SW, mainly 9330 kHz, now occupied
by something very else. (Glenn Hauser)
