Glenn Hauser logs December 23-24, 2021

Friday, December 24 2021

** BRAZIL. 9666.385, Dec 24 at 0728, RVM keeps creeping upward, now
here, one of best extracontinental signals overnight, S4-S7 with good
modulation in songs, 0730 pause for 4:30 timecheck (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CANADA. 250 MCW kHz, Dec 24 at 0723 UT, dash and FO, ND beacon of
1600 watts at Flin Flon, Manitoba. A number of other Canadians
audible, but this one not often. No Blitz storms anywhere in or around
North America (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Dec 23 at 0727, RHC English still on here only, S9 but
undermodulated. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** GERMANY [non]. For the first time this year, the annual `Gruss an
Bord` from NDR carried on SW for mariners asea, Dec 24 at 1800-2100
was supposed to employ WRMI, on 15770, among several other sites.

But from 1800 onwards, 15770 continued with the SMTV cult as normally
scheduled. I reminded Jeff about 15770 at 1806, but still SMTV at
1828. 15770 is JBA into UTwente anyway, so maybe not good into North
Atlantic either. ``Go Tell It On The Mountain`` at 1831. 1845 still
SMTV on 15770. And at 1936 recheck.

6080 Uzbekistan is best into UTwente, tho it can`t be aimed thataway.
[Later:] Axually, HFCC shows 6080 Uzbekistan is 301 degrees aimed back
toward Europe, CIRAF 27-28-29 with 125 kW. It also claims WRMI 15770
is 125 kW, despite all Okees being 100 or less.

Meanwhile, Harald Kuhl, Germany reported to BDXC that the SW program
in German from 1800 was not `Gruss an Bord`, but something else. He
phoned MBR and they got it corrected by 1900. So, screwups everywhere.

I stopped checking 15770 before 2000, but Richard Langley reports:

``So will the frequencies be extended by an hour so the full three
hours can be transmitted? Likely not. And still no joy with WRMI on
15770 kHz. At 2000 UTC, Radio for Peace International started. By
about 2030 UT, WRMI is now broadcasting Gruss an Bord on 15770 kHz.
Don't know when it started. Usual powerful signal into NB.
-- Richard Langley`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA SOUTH [and non]. 6000, Dec 24 at 0741, checking RHC
frequencies but this one normally off by a sesquihour earlier, yet
something weak is here and also with jamming noise. Must be Echo of
Hope, instead of alternate 5995. No report from Ron this week about
its current jumparounds, but Dec 24 Aoki has it on 6000 from 0500 but
no indication of jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 486 kHz, Dec 24 at 2040-2047 UT, no signal detectable at
closest SDRs in northern North Carolina, for special Fessenden
commemoration broadcast, including music, scheduled for 24 hours
starting 2000 UT Dec 24 (and again Dec 31), from WI2XLQ. This year`s
publicity does not specify location but last year it was Forest,
Virginia, a suburb of Lynchburg. Unfortunately no Kiwi SDRs nearby.
Power not specified either but presumably very low, ``Part 5``. Last
year it was 150 watts carrier output, maybe 15 watts ERP. Perhaps will
get out better at night, if really on. Here is *last* year`s info:

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2118 monitoring: confirmed first
SWBCs, UT Friday December 24 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850 VG direct, 7780
S9+10/20 into UTwente.

Also confirmed UT Fri Dec 24 at 0330 on WRMI 5985, JBA direct and into
Querétaro SDR, but S9+5 off the back into Knoxville.

Also confirmed Fri Dec 24 at 1530 on WRMI 9955, S9/+10 direct, no
jamming audible.

Also confirmed Fri Dec 24 at 1915 on IRRS SW 7290 via Bulgaria, and
918 kHz via AM Italia, Villa Estense, the latter VG S9+18 into nearby
Noale KiwiSDR; but 7290 JBA into UTwente.

I had started listening to both about 1903, when 7290 seemed dead air
at S8 with heavy ChiCom ACI de 7290 unless LSB-tuned; but 918 VG S9+18
with `Feature Story News`, 1904 ID, 1905 ``UN News``, 1908 music. By
1907 I could detect same modulation on 7290. WOR still going on both
at 1925, but not positively confirmed lasting until 1944; rechecked at
1959, 918 interrupts a commentary about Iran vs USA, for ``IRRS
signing off`` with the other Aïda theme, but 918 stays on air with FSN
again from 2003.5. Next WORs:

** U S A. 6115, Dec 23 at *2159, WWCR-1 is back on this frequency,
just signing on and 2200 into Spanish, as I tune in during WORLD OF
RADIO 2118 recording. Notice about 6115 & 3215 being off the air has
been removed from website. Span here is 22-02 UT. No 6114 RTTY audible
now, but WWCR so strong that could block, or discourage, it.

3215, Dec 24 at 0735, other WWCR-1 frequency is also back, with TOMBS,
S9+10/20. Span is 02-12 UT. Harold Frodge, MI, had heard 3215 as early
as 0202 UT Dec 23.

4840, Dec 24 at 0735, this WWCR is S9+20/30 of dead air instead of
TOMBS; happens all too frequently; or rather, make that: not
frequently enough. 5890 still going with S9+40 of BS; and 5935 PMS
hitting S9+50! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
