Glenn Hauser logs May 21-22, 2022

Sunday, May 22 2022

** AUSTRALIA. 28445 USB, May 21 at 2214, VK4KX calling CQ10 -- only
signal found on otherwise `dead` band.
VK4KX Australia flag Australia
Bernie
Bernard Terry
Po Box 357
Nambour, Queensland 4560
Australia
Nambour is on the ``Sunshine Coast`` just north of Brisbane. Lots of
info on his health, history, equipment, certificates at:
https://www.qrz.com/db/VK4KX
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 7850 & 3330 RC USBs, May 22 at 0659, no signals from CHU,
apparently off due to storms; but time marches on (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 13680, May 22 at 2240, RHC Spanish S9/+20 on secret
frequency, still missing from EiBi but which has not been updated
since May 3; nor in Aoki as of May 21 which has made little effort to
include true current RHC listings (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000 & 6060 & 6100 & 6165, UT Sunday May 22 at 0700, all RHC
frequencies are off so nowhere for Esperanto scheduled now.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 6185, May 22 at 0700, still no signal from R. Educación.
Stephen Luce, Houston TX, replied on the WOR iog: ``Glenn, I haven't
heard anything out of XEPPM for the past few days here in Houston at
various checks between 0300 and 0500 UT. Usually has a decent signal
though audio levels can be all over the place`` (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** RUSSIA. 78 kHz, re my report of Mayak heard via Izhevsk SDR,
shortly after posting that, another possibility occurred to me:
remnant of ``rediffusion`` wired ``broadcasting`` on LW. And then
multiply confirmed on the WOR iog:

``Also regarding the 78 kHz signal on the Russian SDR: I recall seeing
a similar report a few years ago, and it was said to be the SDR
picking up RF from an old Soviet era wired radio distribution system
that (amazingly) is still in operation. That same report also
mentioned a second signal on 120 kHz. Perhaps this is what you heard?
Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

``This is a traditional line transmitter/wire radio frequency in
Russia. So looks like this type of broadcasting is still on in some
cities.

73, Patrick Robic, Austria``

``Hi Glenn, That's easy: 78 kHz is the Mayak subcarrier in Russian
cable radio networks that still remain operational in some cities
here.

Unfortunately the English Wikipedia article says nothing about such
networks in Russia. Russian article is much more extensive, and you
can also find some info on this matter in the Spanish one:

https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9F%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B5_%D0%B2%D0%B5%D1%89%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%B5
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_por_cable

By the way, cable radio in my city is completely off since 2012, due
to economical non-efficiency. Best 73, Dmitry Mezin, Kazan, Russia``

``Cute! How convenient to find this SDR already tuned to 78 kHz. I
almost wonder why I so far did not have the idea to check if somewhere
Radiotochka bleed-out can still be detected.

By the way, word has it that in the GDR some wired radio systems (I
understand using frequencies above 150 kHz, for use with regular radio
sets) remained in operation into the 70s. But so far no citations are
available to back up this gossip.

And don't confuse two different things: "Cable radio" will nowadays in
a number of countries be understood as "FM radio via TV coax cable",
as introduced in the eighties. It's at present a nice voodoo doll for
those who want to "close down analogue radio", and then they are very
surprised when being told that this political gesture will just bring
the cable distribution of many radio stations to an end.
Kai Ludwig, Germany`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SAO TOME E PRINCIPE. 17530.079, Sun May 22 at 1458, JBA carrier,
one of few sigs on band beyond 17855 Spain, measured just in time
before 1459*. VOA in Kinyarwanda/Kirundi scheduled Sat & Sun only
1400-1500, to be followed immediately by English daily via Botswana
but no sign of that, which per Aoki would be *jammed by the ChiCom
where too many subjects understand English. Something`s unsettled at
USAGM. I also have a JBA not off-frequency signal on 17580 continuing
past 1500 where Pinheira in Kin is also scheduled until 1500 only
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

292, Germany, 9670, and immediately into Russian with no ID, S6/S7

too-close UTwente. Must have started at 1329. Next:

Or via PayPal not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 21525, May 21 at 2214, S5/S7 of dead air, as WRMI-7 Radio
Africa has not been turned off at 2100* as scheduled; with sporadic E
boost (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 12000, May 22 at 0712, 2-way in Spanish. These seem to
