Glenn Hauser logs, May 31/June 2-3, 2023

Saturday, June 03 2023

** ALASKA. 9579.909, June 2 at 1431, as soon as I hear some guy on
WRMI say KNLS has been way off-frequency from 9580 English during
this hour, I check it out direct and measure its JBA carrier here
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. Sporadic-E FM DX May 31: these are duplicates excerpted
from full report under USA and non, where the `flow` of the opening is
preserved. See intro for methodology.

95.1 at 1554, CCI to WAIO NY USA logged a minute earlier: ``Canada`s

96.5 at 1621, French Canadian accent very briefly vs KECO OK: There
are four FFC in QC, but all too far beyond the PTA or even single-hop
Es, in Gatineau, Rimouski, Rouyn-Noranda, Trois-Rivières; rather the
only one in ON, just beyond Barrie on Georgian Bay:

RADIO-CANADA PREMIERE 15.3 168.0 44-46-10 79-59-24 1774/1102

Wow, what a name; never heard it or of it before. Wikipedia: ``The
name Penetanguishene is believed to come from either the Wyandot[3] or
Abenaki via Ojibwe,[4] meaning "land of the white rolling sands".``
But how is it mispronounced, in French and in English, a bilingual
community. In Tranna do they know? Thus endeth this opening! (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 15520, Fri June 2 at 2156, surprised to hear REE with
conversation sounding like Arabic, or some dialect. Arabic supposedly
scheduled only at 1630-1700 M-F, with Spanish at this time per EiBi, and
presumably // 11670 on E Hemisphere channels before joining the West for
English on all from 2200.

Now I switch to 17855, VG direct. News starts about the convoluted
multi-party political situation. A minor elexion on Sunday provoked
the major elexion to be moved up to July 23. This time after 2206,
Justin is interviewing an American jazz pianist, Ben Cidron? who often
performs in Madrid; about AI and where it`s going, notably in music
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, June 2 circa 2222, VOT English confirmed not off the
air today, but only fair reception direct as I`m mainly on much better
17855 Spain (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2193 monitoring: confirmed first
SWBC, Friday June 2 at 1430-1459 on WRMI 9955, S4/S9, no jamming
audible until a trace in pause when I finish. Stays on past 1503 with
gospel huxter, off by next check 1512.

Not confirmed Friday June 2 at 2030 on IRRS SW via AM Italia; rather
checked at 2057, S9+10/15 into nearby Noale SDR playing last week`s
WOR 2192! I`ve reminded them to make sure further repeats are of this
week`s 2193. Not on 918 or 207 kHz. ``IRRS SW signing off`` 1323 at
2000 until ``9 pm tomorrow``, but as always keeps right on, into
Feature Story News. Lite CCI from understation, presumably Brighton.

** U S A. About WBCQ Radio Angela, Uncle Bill responds on the WOR iog:
``secret Swiss``?

``Thank you for listening. The beginning of the Volksmusik segment was
indeed songs I had originally heard during SBC's language change
intervals back in the 70s. Since they never named the artists or tunes
during those it took me decades to find some of the albums, and I
decided to imitate them and just let the music speak this trip.

An old jazz standard includes the line "Romance without finance don't
make no sense......" and that's more or less where things stand now.
I'm not going to speak for all the other programmers, but I personally
am a child of radio, and anything I would ever do in the future would
have a real radio component of some kind even if it also streamed.``

``I think the modern tendency for humans to assume things without
actually looking is part of what hindered us with possible financial
support. In spite of the the fact that Radio Angela went to great
lengths to avoid religious and political fare - if anything our
overall program grid was a true voice of human unity, not division -
many potential donors just couldn't shake the stereotype of private
shortwave stations out of their brains no matter how hard we tried to
explain our mission, which was to be something quite different. This
is rather sad, because in real life, the only way to change things is
to be the change.

I do have the comfort of being able to go to bed at night without
wondering "what if I had tried this?", and if some of the new voices
we brought onto the air are able to make a go of things another way,
this will not have been in vain.``

More from Uncle Bill:
``I would like to say one thing about Angela Weiner specifically - love
or hate her personal political pronouncements, Radio Angela was named
after her because she was a crucial part of our support while we were
on the air. It might not be easy for some people to get their heads
around the fact that she supported world music, but there you have
it. Most people are more complex than their cartoon caricatures, a
fact that gets increasingly lost in a world of algorithms designed to
accentuate our more primitive drives.`` (via gh, WOR)

** U S A. (7490-), UT Sat June 3 from 0000, WBCQ webcast starts with
announcement by non-Angela YL that the following program originally
aired on Feb. 24, 2023! Never heard them do that before. So never
mind. Has AW twitted anything about this or the demise of R. Angela?
No. Starts right off praying about Ukraine on first anniversary of war
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. Another sporadic-E FM DX opening, Wednesday May 31
at 1521-1625 UT, from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario. It`s
taken me a couple days to get this compiled and researched as
Thursdays are busy WOR produxion day. Es FM DX: gotta take it whenever
it decides to happen! In the not yet hot garage, on the Nissan Sentra
2004 stock caradio with fender vertical antenna only; all logs in real
time with my own ears, no RDS capability, no recording, no internet
for stream comparisons; but research later from my scribbled notes,
mainly the WTFDA FM Database, also in general searching if needed. All
times strictly UT! Numbers just before geo coordinates are kW ERP and
antenna height above average terrain in meters. Identical horiz and
vert figures, u.o.s. Last figures are distances in km/stmi
city-to-city so approx., not site-to-city, from distancefromto.net.
Showing distance does not necessarily make a log more definite, but
FYI. I do not count stations, states or anything, what`s `new` or not,
and am not in a competition. Each DX log I view as a potential
learning experience. Clarifications, correxions welcome.

Canadian logs are included in original time order below, and also
duplicated at separate entry under CANADA.

Unlike the FL opening yesterday, many frequencies are 2 or 3 stations
deep vying for captures; many with confusing fringe-area groundwave
signals fading in and out like ionospheric. I include some of those
for completeness or to reconfirm identities.
