Brand-new Radio Familia del Maule, Talca has dominated its frequency during the spring and summer of 1999. The station replaces listed Radio Campanario, Talca-1570. In a QSL the v/s Manuel Yañez Gallegos,Gerente General, reports that it came on the air on April 1 1999 and transmits with a power of 10 kw. A new book on KNR (Greenlands Radio) written by the employees and people of the station from the beginning in 1958 was published recently. The book is called Radiormiut and is a 249 page fully illustrated book in Danish, Greenlandic and English.
Those who take an interest in broadcasting under extreme conditions (in the high Arctics) and pioneering of creating a new radiostation in the past would find this book very informative. Some say that these people - the Radiormiut - not only created a radiostaton but also a nation: Greenland.
Dont buy the book if you expect technical details about KNR (transmitter info etc). But buy the book if you like to read a vivid describtion of the history of KNR.
Radiormiut is
published by Atuakkiorfik and the price is 249 DKK. E-mail: greenpub@greennet.glor fax: +299 32 25

BBC Monitoring has been following news about the financial plight of the Lithuanian Radio and Television. The Lithuanian public broadcaster has not been able to pay the money it owes the Lithuanian Radio and TV Centre, the transmitting agency and another public entity. The Lithuanian Radio and TV has proposed that it be funded by way of a license fee on television sets, which is a typical system in Europe.
Paul Watson, in the World DX Club, via Mike Barraclough in Review of International Broadcasting, heard a report on Radio Vilnius saying that there may be a reduction of the external service, including the cacellation of the English Service. English from Radio Vilnius is broadcast at 1900-1930 on 666 kHz medium wave, 0030-0100 on 9855 kHz for North America, and 0930-1000 on 9710 kHz for Europe.
Via BBC Monitoring, the Russian news agency ITAR-TASS reports that the Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission has issued a license to the Baltic Waves radio station. Baltic Waves, which receives financial aid from Western sources, will transmit to Belarus, where press freedom has been curtailed in recent years. Belarus authorities called this an unfriendly act by Liithuania and an intervention in Belarrusian domestic affairs. (VoA Communications World, Sept 4 1999)

This list should be taken with generous doses of salt. Like their U.S. counterparts, all of the stations are listed as 10,000 watts daytime and 1000 watts at night, non-directional. Unfortunately, the FCC database does not include any call signs, so there is no way of determining whether these are new stations or ones that will move, nor is there any indication when, or even if, these stations will begin operationson the listed frequencies. (DXing.com)
I finally got a reply by e-mail out of them, though not a QSL, rather a note from postmaster@rpp.com.pe saying that I needn't bother struggling to hear them on MW because they now have Real Audio "en vivo" on the web. (Paul Ormandy, via hard-core-dx list)

was one of last year´s major surprises from Uruguay. From having made sporadic appearances during the 1980s and 1990s, it suddenly became one of the most common catches from Uruguay ever since the latter half of 1998. The reason was revealed in a recent QSL, whereby the station claims to have trebled its effect. That ought to mean 3 kw nighttime power. (Olz)

Tejano is not A/C. It is like country to latter generation Mexican Americans, and is not a Mexican music form. It's a mix of norteña and country. Basically only played in Texas. A dying artform. Ratings of tejano staitons are all off everywhere. Many tejano stations have bilingual announcing or all English announcing, like KXTN-107.5 in San Antonio and KHCK-99.1 in Dallas.
"Regional Mexican" is the US denomination for the folk/country music of Mexico: Banda, with the German Un-pah sound, norteña with the accordeon, ranchera (called mariachi... however, a mariachi is a band that plays ranchera) and cumbia (a colombian tropical beat adopted and modified by Mexico). In Mexico, some stations specialize in only one of these genres. In the US, they are almost always mixed. http://www.lanueva1019.com/ is LAs #1 station with regional... MS Media audio.
Spanish A/C is a format that sounds in melody and arrangements just like US AC. Balads, strings, crooners and groups. Ricky Martin became pop after being basically A/C for some time. http://www.klve.com/ is LA's #2 station and the biggist Spanish A/C. Audio on the site.
Spanish pop: techno and dance and light rock. http://www.superestrella.com/ is LAs KSSE. Audio sometimes works.
Tropical: percussive dance music of the Caribbean, salsa and merengue. http://www.salsoul.com/ or http://www.lamega.com/. San Juan #1 station and NYC #4 with audio.
Nostalgia: old ranchera and string trio songs... only real one in US is KKHJ 930 in LA, which is mostly old ranchera. WFBA-990 in Miami was a soft nostalgia, with instrumentals and trio songs, but it is now Disney. 1280 in Monterrey is the classic Mexican nostalgia, Radio Recuerdo.
News/talk, try http://www.ktnq.com/ for LA's talk leader.

there's a list of the Spanish stations that Billboard MAgazine monitors to do
its charts and identifies the format of each. This may help ID some AMs and
understand the formats better. I have oversimplified, as there are many
variants and hybrids, especially in large markets in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Latin
America. (David

on http://www.brsmedia.com/, which operates a large directory of radio broadcasters on the World Wide Web, released statistics showing that 2,615 radio stations provide audio streams via the Internet, compared to 1,652 stations a year ago. The current numbers break down as follows: 1,296 stations in the United States and Canada, 1,071 in other countries, 196 Internet-only broadcasters, and 52 radio networks.
BRS also announced the launch of RadioWeb.FM,
a Web site hosting service. This is for its radio station clients, which have
Web URLs that end with .fm or .am. For example, www.winc.fm or www.y107.fm.
It's a way of working a station's call letters or ID into the Web URL. In the
case of .fm,
it's the Federated States of Micronesia. For .am, it's Armenia. BRS Media
has arrangements with the authorities in those two countries for their client
radio stations to use those Web domains. (VoA Communications World, Sept 4 1999)
