 BOLIVIA

The misssionary organization SIM reports that Radio Mosoj Chaski will soon go on the air in Cochabamba, following the recent granting of a license by the Bolivian government. The station has already produced and recorded one year of programs in the Quechua language. The construction of the studio building is completed, and the programming team has moved in. Construction continues on the caretaker's quarters at the 10 kW tx site. The license was delayed for over two years while the government shut down its telecommunications department and rewrote the laws. After the new laws were issued, new applications were held back while illegal stations were brought into line.

Once on the air, Radio Mosoj Chaski will proclaim the Christian Gospel in Quechua to the entire nation. I would assume by these remarks that the station will use SW, since a 10 kW MW transmitter would not give national coverage. (Colin Miller, VE3CMT, Oct 28)

CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

Radio Minurca, Liberia, is now on the air on 9900 kHz. This UN sponsored radio station Radio Minurca in the Central African Republic is now on the air.

The station, with the purpose of covering the legislative elections in the country, has been logged by several listeners in Europe on 9900 kHz. Some reports:

"The station was rather weak at first, around 1830 UTC, but reception became rather good around 2000 UTC", notes Swedish DXer Gert Nilsson.

"The station suffered from interference from Radio Nederland on 9895 kHz. But fair signals at times", says Danish DXer Stig Hartvig Nielsen. (Nordic Shortwave Center)

CLANDESTINE

Radio Free Iraq, the surrogate broadcasting effort, spearheaded by U.S. Congress, began its transmissions on shortwave and the Internet on October 30.
Radio Free Iraq's schedule was officially released with the activation of the station's homepage [http://www.rferl.org/bd/iq/], raising questions about how its managers plan to attract listeners in Iraq. The release of the schedule at such a late hour, according to the Clandestine Radio Watch newsletter sources, is to undermine potential jamming efforts on behalf of Saddam Hussein's regime. "RFI is being publicized through other means in Iraq".
Schedule: 0300-0330 on 5965, 7110, 7275, and 9740 kHz. 1600-1630 on 6130, 9540, 9850, and 11915 kHz.

Listeners may write to: Radio Free Iraq, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, 1201 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington DC, 20036, USA. (Nordic Shortwave Center)

GREAT BRITAIN (ISLE OF MAN)

First we got Merlin One worldwide.
Now it seems we are going to get Isle of Man worldwide.

Three eager applicants wants to broadcast from the Isle of Man, using a high-powered long wave transmitter, on 279 kHz, put up for bids by the island's local government.

The CLT-UFA consortium have proposed a radio station called Indigo 279. The CLT in this group are the people who owns another long wave radio station, Atlantic 252.

Another applicant is a Manx company backed by a former UK Radio Authority chief, while the third bidder have the most extravagant plans. For them, the high power station on the Isle of Man is only the beginning:

"We plan to use a network of former BBC World Service transmitters which will send the station's signal into Australasia and North America, as well as some FM stations in other places such as the Cote d'Azur," explains the Isle of Man International Broadcasting founder Paul Rusling according to Newstide.

IoMIBC believe their 279 kHz long wave signal will reach as far as Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, but plan to boost reception still further by broadcasting on satellite and short wave to other parts of the world.

"It's very important that the station be seriously 'international' and not just a station broadcasting to the UK. Lucky Luxembourg brought sweeping changes to the BBC over its half a century of serving music starved British audiences, then the offshore stations had their on effect, precipitating Radio One and commercial radio."

And now, Rusling hopes, is the time for comercial adventures such as Merlin One and the new Isle of Man radio station.

IoMIBC can be contacted at P O Box 279, Ramsey, IM99 4HT, or through e-mail at IoMIBC@broadcast.net. Web site at http://www.longwaveradio.com

LIBERIA

The Liberian Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications says it has withdrawn with immediate effect the shortwave frequencies, 3400 and 5888 kHz, assigned to Star Radio. The decision was said to be based a recent government decision to review all shortwave broadcasting stations operating in the country.

"We have been advised to close down our shortwave operation pending a review of shortwave broadcasting stations in Liberia. Our FM is not affected", Star Radio director George Bennett said to BBC Monitoring. (Nordic Shortwave Center)

When I visited the station studio located at Jr. Amazonas No.315 in a small town of Aramango, on September 28, 1998, Radio Ondas del Río Marañon was out of the air due to a technical problem. SIERRA LEONE

Sierra Leone has seen major political changes this year. From 25 May 1997 to 12 February 1998, the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service, the SLBC, reflected the views of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council. During the period of military rule, news releases were submitted by SLBS, and were also posted on the SLBS internet website, which operated from December 1997 to February 1998. During the same period, Sierra Leone News Update was compiled and distributed by the pro-democracy radio station FM 98.1. This station was considered to be a "clandestine" station as it had not officially been allocated a frequency. Since the end of military rule, SLBS reflects the views of the civilian government. Transcripts of many news broadcasts up to August 9th this year are available at http://www.sierra-leone.org/radio.html (Sennitt, via DX Window 138)

THE GULF/USA

Iraqi airwaves are boiling with clandestine radio stations - and expect more to come as the US-Iraqi crisis deepens. The United States is currently tied to three clandestines for sure:

Radio Free Iraq, The Future, and Voice of the Brave Armed Forces.

The Future and Voice of the Brave Armed Forces, according to various media reports and confirmed by CRW sources within the Iraqi opposition, operate from a CIA transmitter in Kuwait. The sources also tell CRW that the transmitter is a 50 kW Harris model and is housed within the Voice of America facility.

Listeners in Europe and Eastern North America can try to hear The Future (Arabic: Huna al-Mustaqbal) and Voice of the Brave Armed Forces (Arabic: Sawt al-quwwat al Musallah al-basilah) between 1557-1584v kHz around 0200-0300 UTC.

Radio Free Iraq is an easier target and one that is heard worldwide. Its schedule is as follows:

1600-1630 6130, 9540, 9850, 11915 kHz

0300-0330 5965, 7110, 7275, 9740 kHz

INTERNET

Where is that signal coming from...

For some real hot web radio stuff, go check the Elliott Broadcast Services. Choose station or frequency in the supplied FCC Database, and you will be able to get a detailed map of the exact transmitter location for any US or Canadian station on AM and FM. What could we say but: Wow! http://www.radiostation.com/fccdata/amcall.html

A similar service, but not that perfect yet, is the Airwaves Radio Log http://www.airwaves.com/fccdb.html
