ARGENTINA

1620 - Radio Esmeralda

DX'er N. Eramo reports from Argentina that R Esmeralda, Buenos Aires 1620 has been seized and closed by COMFER. It seems likely that more stations operating illegally on MW will be closed. (Play-DX 1011)
R Esmeralda ID heard by me (Olz) as late as Jan 19, 1999. Thus still spanish is heard on 1620 sometimes and in late January, Lars Vidlund (LV) has heard a station with the ID "Radio Tropicana, Buenos Aires" on the frequency. A new station a or new name of Esmeralda or even maybe Esmeralda is already back again? (Björn Olsson)

Looking for recordings of Arctic stations

My name is Sam Ward. I am 44 years old and totally blind. I have recently found an affordable speech package which has allowed me to surf the Internet for the first time. I have been aware of the Nordic DX web site for some time due to the fact that is was listed on Radio Netherland's web site.

First of all, I want to commend you on an excellent site with a great amount of worthwhile information for serious DX-ers. Secondly, it is a very speech friendly site for the blind which is a bonus.

I have always had a special interest in the Nordic area and in Arctic radio stations in general. I have often heard severe Arctic flutter on shortwave stations such as Radio Sweden International and Radio Finland.

I have always wondered if the same sort of Arctic flutter occurs within the Arctic on mediumwave. I have also wondered what the northernmost actual broadcast station in the world is? Is it CHAR on the northeastern tip of Ellesmere Island at Alert, or is there a station further north in Franz Joseph Land?

Although I do not understand much Finnish, Swedish or Norwegian, I'm wondering if anyone in your club has recordings of local IDs from the radio stations in the extreme northern portions of these countries?

I would like to hear the IDs of the radio stations in places such as Hammerfest and Nordkapp, Norway, Kiruna, Sweden, and Utsjoki and Nuorgam, Finland. Perhaps they don't have any local ID announcements at all, but I would also be interested in hearing some of the Sami language. I am also interested in hearing any radio stations from Svalbard, Bear and Jan Meyan Islands.

I am sure that many of you have been involved in DX-peditions to Lapland. I am very curious to know just how propagation changes throughout a 24 hour day during the polar night in Lapland. I wonder just when certain sections of the world propagate into Lapland over the pole.

I would also be very curious to hear how trans-Arctic reception of Alaskan and Canadian stations actually sound. I am interested in hearing how stations like KBRW 680 in Barrow, KFAR 660 in Fairbanks, KCBF 820 and KJNP 1170 propagate over the pole. Does anybody have a decent recording of the "Media Network" program from Radio Netherlands from February of 1996 in which Jonathan Marx visited Finnish Lapland? I wanted to record it at the time, but I was very sick at the time.

I have tried to obtain the current weather conditions for Utsjoki-Kevo in Finland and even using a Finnish weather location search engine, I have not found Utsjoki listed. Another thing that greatly interest me is the exact dates that places like Thule, Greenland, Hammerfest and Nordkapp, Norway and Utsjoki, Finland loose daylight in winter and for how many days they are dark. I haven't been able to find a web site that gives this information for specific towns at nortern latitudes. I have always found it interesting to compare the amount of minutes of sunlight gained or lost each day during the transitional period in the north. For example, in Barrow, Alaska, the amount of daylight gained or lost is about 15 minutes a day. I'm sure it is even more in even higher latitudes.

As you can see, I am very intensely interested in the Arctic. Hermod, please feel free to forward this message to whom ever you think would be most interested in trading material with me. My interests include both mediumwave and shortwave DX-ing, maps and geography, weather and climate, flomusic from around the world, rock music of the 50's and 60's and making new friends. I am not terribly interested in Latin American DX, mainly the Arctic and Oceania. I do have some interesting exotic recordings to share with other people such as AFAN FM at McMurdo, Antarctica, A3Z AM and FM in Tonga, FIBS from the Falkland Islands and many Alaskan stations.

With greetings from Georgetown, Ontario, Canada, your truly, Sam Ward.
