GREAT BRITAIN/ISLE OF MAN
Isle of Man gets longwave radio station
The Isle of Man Communications Commission has announced that it is intended to grant a long wave licence to the Isle of Man International Broadcasting Company Limited (IoMIBC). The station is expected to broadcast under the callsign "MusicMann 279".
One of the features of IoMIBC's application is the use of a new type of broadcast antenna, which will result in the need for a much smaller transmitter-mast than would otherwise be expected.
As well as being subject to the approval of the Isle of Man government, the station will have to seek planning permission for it's proposed transmission site.
The decision marks the conclusion of a 5 year campaign to establish a long-wave station on the island. (Newstide)
GUATEMALA
Shortwave from Guatemala soon history
Shortwave is loosing it grip on ordinary listeners in Guatemala. Most stations are now looking to expand into FM to cover their communities, according to a report in Cumbre DX. Thus Wayne Berger, well-known veriesigner and technical expert for several Guatemala religious shortwave broadcasters, has stopped buying parts, including tubes, for several transmitters still used on shortwave. Berger estimates that he can run them for about 5 more years with the parts he has.
The stations are all belongen to CAM International, a loose association of several Guatemalan Protestant stations, including:
2360/3325 - Radio Maya de Barillas
On 2360 kHz using an old Collins from the 1930's, but rebuilt several years ago. It runs about 250 watts, 300 if they aren't watching the meters. On 3325 kHz using a 1 kW converted AM Gates transmitter.
3300 - Radio Cultural
The station is a very popular in Guatemala, according to Wayne Berger, Chief Engineer. He says that they have about 80 percent of the country covered by FM repeaters, while 3300 kHz remains on the air to cover some rural areas. However, Berger is considering turning it off to save electricity unless they have more of a response to the shortwave. He only hears from people when it has been off for a few days, so they will figure out a better way to see who is still listening to the shortwave and then make a decision on its future. Power is 10 kW and it is on 24 hours.
Cultural on 5955 kHz is kept only for DXers, with Berger mentioning that he receives about 50 reports a year. He no longer operates the 10 kW for this frequency, but simply uses an old 1 kW backup. Berger says that it is on 2230 to 1100 UTC.
4800 - Radio Buenas Nuevas
Is using an old Gates 1 kW converted from AM. This station also goes by the name of Radio Mam, but should not be confused with the Radio Mam on 4825 kHz.
4845 - Radio K'ekchi
Has a 5 kW transmitter but it never runs at more than 1.5 to 2 kW. It draws off the town's power and was always knocking the town's generator off when it was operating at full-power, hence the reduction. (Cumbre DX)
