BOLIVIA

3310 - Radio Mosoj Chaski

The long awaited Bolivian radio station Mosoj Chaski, broadcasting from Cochabamba, is now active, and has been heard by many DXers with good signals on 3310 kHz. Station ID is often given as "R. Mosoj Chaski...tres mil trescientos diez kilohercios... banda de noventa metros".

One reporter, Brasilian DXer Djaci Franklin Silva, has provided us with a nice recording of this station. It can be found as http://www.nordicdx.com/mojos.mp3

According to a HCJB's DX Partyline April 17 interview with Eldon, an engineer at Radio Mosoj Chaski, the station was inaugurated on April 12 at 6 pm. Name means "New runner" or "New messenger". They run a schedule of 5-8 am and 6-9 pm local time (UTC -4), all in Quechua language. They use a lazy-H vertical-incidence antenna. Address is Casilla 4493, Cochabamba, with email address given as chaski@bo.net. (via Hauser's Review of International Broadcasting)

CANADA

740 - CBL

in Toronto, will likely vacate 740 kHz on June 19, according to DXer Wayne Plunkett, who is quoting "a reliable source within the CBC's Engineering Group". Full details are not yet known at our deadline, but presumably the shut-down will follow the same pattern as already used when the two CBC Montrealers on 690 and 940 left the air. Regular programming continued there until the target closing date and time, then a continuous tape loop announced the closure and advised listeners to tune to FM. CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

9900 - Radio Minurca

At the end of May the station could boost its power on this frequency to 1 kW, according to the station's David Smith.
Some days earlier we received, via Don Moore, this posting on the DEVMEDIA newsgroup by Radio Minurca's David Smith:

"We've been having trouble with our transmitters. Earlier this week we started sending out a signal on 9900 kHz (500w) from Bangui, in addition to signals on 9500 and 5900kHz, using a low-power HF transmitter.

"Although programmes are targeted to the Central African Republic, I'd like to know where (if anywhere) apart from here, we're being picked up.

"If all goes well, the 500w tx will be boosted to 1kw in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the one kw tx will grow into a 20kw piece of equipment in the next month or two, in preparation for presidential elections tentatively scheduled for September.

"Reception reports will be confirmed with a QSL card.

ETHIOPIA

5500, 7515 - Voice of Tigray Revolution

A QSL received from the Voice of Tigray Revolution had some interesting info about the station, which can be reached at: Fre Tesfamichael, Voice of the Revolution of Tigray, P.O.Box 450, Mekelle, Tigray, Ethiopia.
Here we quote part of that letter, with a lot of propaganda cut out:

"Our radio has been broadcasting ever since 1986 from the bushes of Tigray we used to call the liberated area during the past armed struggle period we waged against the pro-Soviet fascist regime. The people of Tigray lead by the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) fought for 17 years against Soviet intervention and fascist Military junta of the Derg. We have paid a lot of sacrifices.

"Since that times the radio has been the Voice of the People of Tigray. The radio was a symbol of unity of our people. In 1991 the war ended. The Soviet backed Derg regime was toppled down. Our organization TPLF with its sister member organizations of Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front EPRDF came to power through a democratic election.

"Our radio is now working for the consolidation of the already gained peace and democracy. The Voice of the Revolution of Tigray is broadcasted, using 10kw short-wave (AM) transmitter from the capital city of Tigray (one of the autonomous regional states of Ethiopia), Mekelle for 50 hrs. Weekly, oa 5500 and 7515 khz short wave. Its present air time programs are as follows: Monday to Friday Morning 0400 - 0500 (UTC); Midday 0930 -1030 (UTC); Evening 1500 -1900 (UTC) Saturday and Sunday Morning 0400- 0900 (UTC); Afternoon 1100 - 1630 (UTC). These airtime programs can be expanded for the future. The radio's area of coverage with excellent reception are Ethiopia, Eritrea, and other Horn of African countries and The Middle East. The language is Tigrigna.

"With best wishes, Fre Tesfamichael, Director, VORT"

GREAT BRITAIN

6175 - Merlin Network One

Short wave radio is not the Big Thing anymore. At least that was what Merlin Network One soon found out. Having tried to launch a worldwide 24 hours entertainment broadcast net on short wave, lack of interest has forced them to cut down dramatically. Late May Merlin Network One made its last 24 hour short wave broadcast. They are now down to five hours of broadcasting a week, Mon-Fri at 1600-1700 UTC, on 6175 kHz via Skelton. A report on Radio Netherlands Media Network, June 3, dealt which this development. The report can be heard in realaudio via WRN on-demand-audio at http://www.wrn.org/. (Nordic Shortwave Center)

INTERNET

Huge Bolivian map

LA fan Don Moore has added a huge Bolivian map to his excellent Patepluma website.
The map is a 1 meter square military map of Bolivia that he purchased there in 1985. The map was scanned to 21 different jpeg files totaling about 10.5 megs. It is very detailed and should be a help to anyone DXing Bolivia. Go to http://www.swl.net/patepluma/ and follow the link from the main menu. (Nordic Shortwave Center)

DX Window only for members

The Danish Shortwave Club has closed its email newsletter DX Window. They want to restructure the whole thing, in order to make it a bulletin for paying members only.
At the same time we note that Australian DXer Bob Padula has given up his efforts to make his EDXP newsletter for subscribers only. "It obviously doesn't work that way on the Internet", notes Padula when announcing that EDXP once more is a newsletter free of charge.
In spite of this, the DSWCI intends to go forward with its for-paying-members-only policy, according to decisions made on its Annual General Meeting in May.
