I used CW ever since my Novice license (kn2euh) in the 50's.
Most of my Ham activity was done with CW. It has been a lot
of fun and I never regretted using code. Last time was at the
end of June when I operated for about 8 hours for k4tn, the
Brandon ham club, on 40 and 20 cw. I have been k2euh for
50 years now, but living in a townhome has put me off the air.
I sometimes get my Bencher paddle and HD-1410 keyer
module out and just send to myself for a few minutes.
Using a keyboard CW generator is not on my list of things to
do either. I got a 2nd class commercial telegraphy FCC
license in the 80's when I considered going to work for WSL,
the ITT-Worldcom ship-shore station that operated from Long
Island. The Marisat and Inmarsat stuff put them, WCC, KFS
etc all in the dumper. A few years later, that license got me
work at their transmitting station, until that eventually
closed around 1986.
CW, however, probably damaged my hearing a bit as I believe
I have "nerve deafness" which shows up as difficulty in
distinguishing spoken sounds, especially consonants such
as d,t,v,p,b in noisy backgrounds. Today's kids who have
loud personal-stereos with headphones will probably
show the same effect when they get older. I do better with
weak CW than with weak AM reception, or SSB reception.
