[IRCA] Orcas Island DX Loggings - September 19
Using the ability to "rewind the tape" on the entire MW band with the
Perseus SDR, it took me 16 hours over two days to thoroughly review the
files for the 0530-1500 UTC period of September 19. Whew! Having the luxury
of going over and over even the weakest signals with possibilities meant
that I was able to log many more stations than during "real time" DXing.
My logs from the 19th alone are below; full details plus a few audio clips
and tips for using Perseus are in the newest post on my blog.
It was very much an Asian evening, with a handful of South Pacific stations
included. I didn't as much as hear a whisper from DU stations, despite using
JB's SW Conti Super Loop up until 1030 UTC.

279 RUSSIA R. Rossi, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Sep 19 1320 - Somber orchestral
tune, followed by a capella choir and male speaker in Russian. Fair to good

529 ALASKA SQM Sitka, Sep 19 0502 - Poor to fair with Alaska weather and SQM
Morse code ID. (Atkins-WA)
567 JAPAN JOIK Sapporo, Sep 19 0932 - Two male announcers covering a
sporting event; good level and parallel to 594 JOAK. (Atkins-WA)
576 CHINA Two unid. locations, Sep 19 1200 - Curious half-second echo on all
audio, with overlapping 5+1 time pips, and into news in Chinese read by man
and woman. All audio suffering from severe echo, likely from
non-synchronized transmitters. Fair to good signal level. (Atkins-WA)
594 JAPAN JOAK Tokyo, Sep 19 0910 - Fading in quickly to fair level, with
NHK1 news in Japanese by female. Parallel to 837. (Atkins-WA)
621 JAPAN Unid., Sep 19 1252 - Two male announcers talking in Japanese. This
station was not relaying 567 JOIK, nor relaying JONK 819, two possibilities
per the Pacific Asian Log (PAL). So, perhzps this was JOOK in Kyoto, or the
[callsign unknown] station in Nobeoka...based on the process of elimination.

666 JAPAN JOBK Osaka, Sep 19 1324 - Lively talk by two male announcers in
Japanese. Fair signal level. Parallel to 567 NHK1. (Atkins-WA)
666 NEW CALEDONIA R. Nouvelle Caledonie, Noumea, Sep 19 1042 - It's been a
while since I've heard New Caledonia... male and female announcers in
French. The broadcast appeared to be parallel to 738 Tahiti, relaying RFO.

702 CHINA Unid., Sep 19 1025 - Chinese style orchestral music, bothered some
by slop from 700, and talk in Chinese by female at 1035 recheck. Poor-fair.

702 JAPAN NHK2, unid. location, Sep 19 1044 - Male announcer in Japanese,
parallel to 774. This is either JOFB Hiroshima or JOKD Kitami. Fair level.

720 NORTH KOREA KCBS Kanggye, Sep 19 1318 - Tentative, with very splattered
audio possibly in Korean; actual frequency was 719.9. Kanggye is listed as
parallel to 657, which was also in Korean at this time, but I could not be
sure the two were parallel. (Atkins-WA)
738 TAHITI RFO Papeete, Sep 19 0529 - Het first noted around 0430, then
threshold audio 0510, and a few minutes of island music at fair level 0528.
Quite a bit stronger with male announcer in French at 0710. (Atkins-WA)
747 JAPAN JOIB Sapporo, Sep 19 0850 - This NHK2 regular was noted quickly
fading in around 0850 UTC as sunset began to sweep across Japan. Parallel
774 JOUB Akita also followed the same rapid fade-in. 3+1 time pips at 0900
and into English language news by female announcer. SW Aussie loop (Conti
Super Loop) was in use until 1030, when I switched the Perseus SDR to the NW
Wellbrook Phased Array while the receiver was recording the band.

756 JAPAN JOGK Kumamoto, Sep 19 1015 - Weak signal of male announcer in
Japanese; gone by 1018. Tentative. (Atkins-WA)
774 Unid., Sep 19 1208 - Chinese talk by man heard in the background of a
very strong JOUB during pauses in the Japanese/English lesson. (Atkins-WA)
774 JAPAN JOUB Akita, Sep 19 0850 - NHK2 'big gun' noted in parallel with
774 JOIB with a quick fade-in at 0850. (Atkins-WA)
819 NORTH KOREA KCBS Pyongyang, Sep 19 1255 - Patriotic orchestral music to
3+1 time pips at 1300 and male announcer in Korean with an ID that seemed
similar to that listed in Pal. 5+1 time pips from a Chinese station heard in
the background, along with another one or two stations audible on the
frequency, making 819 a real mess. (Atkins-WA)
828 JAPAN JOBB Osaka, Sep 19 0903 - Fair level, with NHK2 English news in
parallel to 747 and 774. A few minutes later, around 0928, JOBB and the
other NHK2 stations were heard in Spanish with a male announcer!.

837 CHINA Harbin?, Sep 19 1043 - Woman announcer in Chinese at tune-in,
followed by a phone interview with another woman which went across the top
of the hour without ID. 5+1 time pips heard at exactly 1100, though. Very
dramatic 'soap opera' with arguing man and woman actors at 1144 recheck.

837 JAPAN JOQK Niigata, Sep 19 0903 - Faint Japanese talk with presumed news
by female announcer. Parallel to 594. (Atkins-WA)
846 KIRIBATI T3K1 Tarawa, Sep 19 0658 - First whisper of a het around 0650
(Kiribati sunset), then threshold audio 0702. Poor. (Atkins-WA)
855 NORTH KOREA Sangwon, Sep 19 1305 - Presumed, with Korean talk by male
and rousing orchestral music. Actual frequency was 855.06, accounting for
the low rumble (het) on the signal. Fair level. (Atkins-WA)
864 UNIDENTIFIED Unid., Sep 19 1343 - US pop music tunesw; quite strong
signal at times, but fluctuated rapidly down into the noise...strange
reception around sunrise! Station took a nose dive at 1357 and never
returned. Presumed Newstalk ZB in background around 1345, with English
announcers and mentions of Auckland and possibly Invercargill. (Atkins-WA)

announcers in Japanese, parallel to 774. (Atkins-WA)
909 CHINA CNR?, Sep 19 1127 - Chinese language announcer at good level.

909 JAPAN JOCB Nagoya, Sep 19 1239 - Male talking in English about a student
gathering sponsorships for a fund raising campaign, followed by a woman in
Japanese with the translation. Low level signal and covered in splatter, but
ID'd as an NHK2 station parallel to 774 JOUB using the Perseus SDR recording
to examine the same moment in time for each frequency. A new Japanese

918 UNIDENTIFIED Unid., Sep 19 1032 - Light jazz music with saxaphone and
guitar heard at fair level briefly before it dropped back in the noise. YBC
Japanese network station possibly?. (Atkins-WA)
945 CHINA CNR1, Sep 19 1357 - This station started out with a very good
signal at tune-in with a string of lively advertisements. The signal then
built to an excellent level rapidly, as a haunting Chinese melody and vocals
played prior to the top of the hour. Another ad followed, plus 5+1 time pips
at 1400 and into '...Renmin Guangbo Dientai' ID and music fanfare.

963 CHINA CRI, Sep 19 1325 - After a warbly het for a couple hours, finally
nice audio from CRI's Russian service. Woman announcer in Russian and very
nice Chinese orchestral music. Strong signal. (Atkins-WA)
972 SOUTH KOREA HLCA Dangjin, Sep 19 0952 - Rapid rise from the noise floor
at 0950 with man and woman Korean announcers, right as sunset started across
the Korean penninsula. HLAZ Cheju on 1566 also starting to fade in at the
same time. Very good level 1105 with news items about USA presidential race,
and sound bites of candidates. (Atkins-WA)
1017 CHINA CRI Changchun, Sep 19 1000 - Presumed this location, with open
carrier noted on 1017 prior to 1000, then CRI trumpet fanfare and man and
woman announcer in Korean with likely IDs (almost sounded like each phrase
began with 'Radio...'). Followed by China national anthem 'March of the
Volunteers'. Low level signal in the noise, and disappeared a few minutes
later. Back and much stronger, nearly 100% copy by 1045. Unidentified
station very weakly in background. (Atkins-WA)
1017 TONGA A3Z Nuku'Alofa, Sep 19 0807 - Threshold audio at 0807 when the
signal first started to fade in (curiously, well past Tonga sunset). Heard
very weakly for the next hour or so, with Tongan lang. announcers and island

1053 JAPAN JOAR Nagoya, Sep 19 1328 - A real jumble on 1053, with JOAR
over/under the North Korean jammer. Also hints of possible Tagalog, which
might be DYSA, Radio Veritas, Philipines. (Atkins-WA)
1062 CHINA Zhujiang JGD, Sep 19 1252 - Presumed location with Chinese talk
by man. Quick fade, and replaced by DZEC Manila. (Atkins-WA)
1062 PHILIPPINES DZEC Manila, Sep 19 1253 - Rapid fade-up over China, with
male announcer in Tagalog, also mixing with a Japanese low power station
during DZEC fades. All stations in a fade at 1300 top-of-hour, except China
which had echoey 5+1 time pips from multiple transmitters. (Atkins-WA)
1089 JAPAN JOHB Sendai, Sep 19 1238 - Another NHK2 outlet running English
language lessons, parallel to 774 JOUB. Fair signal but hit hard by 1090
splatter. A new Japanese station for me. (Atkins-WA)
1098 MARSHALL ISLANDS V7AB Majuro, Sep 19 0643 - Noted fading in with weak
audio by male at 0643 in presumed Marshallese, at sunset in the Marshalls.
Signal was fading back into the noise about once per minute, until 0708 when
a female announcer was heard at slightly better strength, introducing an
island music tune. Another jump in strength was at 0718, but still with
regular fades. Noted at various weak signal levels with island music
throughout the next hour. (Atkins-WA)
1188 CHINA CRI, Sep 19 1349 - Presumed CRI here, with Burmese sounding talk
that ended per PAL sked at 1357, followed by sign-on 1359:30 in an
Indian-like language (Sinhalese listed). Fair signal. (Atkins-WA)
1206 CHINA Yanbian RGD, Sep 19 1342 - Strong signal of Korean language talk
by two women; appeared to be a phone interview. Completely faded by 1355.

1224 CHINA CNR Shenzhou, Sep 19 1318 - Chinese man and woman announcers;
fair level on a noisy frequency. Location tentative...my guess based on
previous logs of 1224. (Atkins-WA)
1242 JAPAN JOLF Tokyo, Sep 19 1240 - Man and woman announcers in Japanese;
weak signal in the muck of 1240 kHz. (Atkins-WA)
1269 JAPAN Unid., Sep 19 1335 - Lively Japanese talk but low signal. Not
parallel 1287 or 1098, so possibly JOJR Tokushima. (Atkins-WA)
1287 JAPAN JOHR Sapporo, Sep 19 1024 - First noted at 1024 with two rapid
talking announcers in Japanese; after a while it became clear they were
announcing a sporting event. Musical advertisement at 1030, and back to the
sports event. Big swings in signal strength from nonexistent to fairly good.

1323 CHINA CRI, Sep 19 1253 - Russian service with somber-voiced announcer;
fair level and parallel to 963. (Atkins-WA)
1422 JAPAN JORF Yokahoma, Sep 19 1310 - Fair, with man in Japanese. This RF
Radio Nippon outlet is listed in PAL as relaying 1485, but not a trace of a
signal was found on 1485. Also checked 1287, which John Bryant reported in
2003 as possibly parallel, but the programming was different. (Atkins-WA)
1440 JAPAN JOWF Sapporo, Sep 19 1034 - Rapid talking Japanese announcers for
sports event; seemed to be between teams from Hokkaido and Tokyo. JOWF
mostly dominated 1440 kHz for two or three minutes before the frequency was
taken over again by domestics. (Atkins-WA)
1503 JAPAN JOUK Akita, Sep 19 1344 - Japanese discussion by man and woman;
fair level and parallel to 594 JOAK. (Atkins-WA)

1512 JAPAN Unid., Sep 19 1345 - Low power Japanese broadcaster here,
parallel to NHK2 outlets. Poor to fair. (Atkins-WA)
1557 TAIWAN Family Radio, Kouhu, Sep 19 1346 - First noted the clarinet
music that is the signature tune of Dr. Harold Camping, a frequent speaker
on WYFR. This was followed by low level Chinese talk by male. Fade-out just
before 1400 top of the hour. (Atkins-WA)
1566 SOUTH KOREA HLAZ Cheju, Sep 19 1047 - Nice piano solo of Beethoven's
'Fur D' Elise' at tune-in; HLAZ ID in Korean at 1057. Sign-off of Korean
service at 1059 with male opera-style vocals and brief announcement. Back on
at 1100 with 5+1 time pips and ID in Chinese. Signal level dropped from very
good to fair during the switch-over of beam and language. (Atkins-WA)
1575 THAILAND VOA Ban Phachi, Sep 19 1310 - News items or commentary in
Vietnamese; 'The Voice of America' sung in English at 1308, followed by more
talk by a woman. Numerous mentions of Bac Thai, a city in Vietnam. Good
