They are scheduled to have their inaugural broadcast this coming
Sunday, April 25, 1999, at 3 PM Eastern Time.
The station will be a French language station, playing country music.

WCBW-1510 Highland, IL is not yet on the air...it will be Contemporary
Christian music when it signs on. Not known is whether or not they will
also use "The Bridge" as their slogan, as they had on 104.9 MHz. Other
AM stations now running New Life Contemporary Christian programming,
besides WINU-880 Highland, IL (which does it overnight, but still
carries Cubs and White Sox baseball) are WDID-1560 Shelbyville, IL,
KMRF-1510 Marshfield, MO (//KNLM-91.9) and KWAS-1230 Joplin, MO. This is
run by the New Life Evangelistic Center, based in St. Louis, MO. It's
President is Reverend Larry Rice, an advocate for the poor and homeless.
NLEC only owns WDID and KMRF.

KZJZ-1380 St. Louis, MO has switched news networks...dropping Mutual for
CNN Radio.

The closest Mutual affiliate to St. Louis is WMIX-940 Mount Vernon, IL,
which now carries News/Talk weekdays, C&W //FM during the day on
Saturdays, and Westwood One Adult Standards on Saturday nights, Sundays
and as filler.

The situation as it is now on the Phoenix radio dial...

550 is announcing KGME running sports.
1230 is announcing KOY running American standards.
1360 is announcing as KGME running Howard Stern in a rebroadcast from
      "The Edge" 106.3.

April 23, 1999
HOWARD STERN and the "Edge" programming is being simulcast on 1360
until SALEM takes over the frequency. KGME has officially moved to 550
AM with sportstalk.
Let me take a moment to mention that JOHN GIBSON took time out his
busy news announcing schedule to drop us a note. GIBSON is now the only
"original" member left of the KOOL morning show. He has been there for
over six years and lasted through five versions of KOOL mornings. In
updating the RADIO DIAL page, I inadvertently left out a few notable
members of the broadcast community and I hope someone will let me know
when an error has been made.

FROM THE MAILBAG:

Sorry to hear from Jason Remington who keeps us informed about
Arizona radio that KOY will be moving from 550 to 1230...to make way for
the market's third sports station to get a better signal. It's amazing
that in a market that has a large retirement community there's no room
for a strong radio signal to serve that audience. Up till 10 years ago,
Phoenix had two easy listening stations, KQYT and KMEO on FM, as well as
several adult standards stations and KOY which was a sort of full
service MOR station...very light AC music, DJ chatter, full news
department, Bruce Williams and Sally Jesse Rafael talk shows at night
from TalkNet.
Both KQYT and KMEO's easy listening formats were killed while still
getting great 12+ numbers. KQYT just changed format one day (it was
KOY's FM sister). Meanwhile KMEO went through a gradual change of adding
more AC vocals till it was an AC station. Even that AC station (in a
market which has more commercial FM signals than NYC) was still getting
great (if older) 12+ ratings. Since then it's gone through multiple call
letter and format changes, never coming close to the ratings it got as
an easy listening station. (And I assume never making the profit KMEO
made.)
Still no one wants a station that pulls great, if older, numbers. The
latest insult is to trash KOY which was consistantly in the top 5 with
almost no overhead. I believe it has a local morning show and runs ABC
Stardust format the rest of the day. ..... it's moving from the best AM
signal in Arizona to a spot on the dial that will be difficult to hear
at night in many of the retirement communities that are more than 12
miles outside downtown Phoenix. All to make way for the market's third
sports station.
Meanwhile, no one will try an older adult format on FM, even with 17
FM signals, many doing almost nothing in the ratings. Phoenix has more
country stations than Houston, more rock stations than Detroit, more AC
stations than LA. It has a black population that barely supplied enough
listeners for one AM station...now it has two black-leaning FM's. But no
one wants to put an older adult format on the radio...in one of the
biggest retirement communities in the West.
Why does radio have this phobia against older audiences? I've heard
theories. The sales staff of most radio stations is in their 20's & 30's
and either can't or doesn't want to sell an older station to older
clients. GM's and SM's don't want to meet their counterparts from
younger stations on the golf course or at the charity dinner and be
known as the staff from "my dad's radio station." Time buyers in NYC or
LA are all 28 and have built in prejudices against older stations...even
if they're buying time for clients who are not especially youth-leaning.
The ratings service skews to younger audiences. The ratings break
outs are for 18-34, 18-49, 25-49, 25-54, etc. God forbid your ratings
strength is outside those demos...even though we all know that the 18-34
audience has nowhere near the buying power of the 35-64 audience
(especially when most of the strongest 18-34 stations target communities
that are still struggling for economic equality). In Las Vegas, an FM
station was in some sort of court battle. Rather than take it silent, a
court - appointed manager put Westwood One's "AM Only" format on the
full power FM station...KJUL, The Jewel. It was 24 hours of satellite
adult standards...although this format really is more Kenny Rogers and
Carpenters than Bing Crosby or Andrew Sisters. What happened? The
station went to #1 and remains at #1, 2 or 3. With no contests, staff,
givaways, etc.

The same thing happened to KEZK-102.5 here in St. Louis. While still
drawing excellent numbers, they pulled the plug on their Easy Listening
format in 1990, and switched to a Soft Adult Contemporary format (that
format has since fine-tuned to Adult Contemporary). In an unusual move,
the Easy Listening format was moved to 590 kHz in Wood River, IL
(bumping WCEO from the dial, and adopting the KEZK calls on AM). The
format didn't draw the numbers that it had on FM, and the station
temporarily simulcast the FM before adopting the all-sports format (as
KFNS) in 1993. There had been two Easy Listening stations on FM in St.
Louis and one on AM as late as 1979. KCFM-93.7 became KSD-FM when their
owners, Gannett Radio, purchased KSD-550 (now KTRS) in 1979. The format
was changed to Adult Contemporary (calling themselves "KS-94"). KSD-FM
went to Hot AC in 1984 (dropping the "KS-94" slogan in the spring of
1987), Classic Rock in late 1987, fine-tuning to current rock in 1993,
and returning to Classic Rock in 1996. They're now AC/Oldies ('70s, '80s
and '90s) as "Mix 93.7". 590 had been an Easy Listening station once
before, as WRTH. The station had a small-town flavor to it, even
announcing the Illinois Lottery numbers on a daily basis. The station
fine-tuned to "Music of Your Life" in 1981. Their only competition was
KCFM-97.1 (now KXOK), which had the "Hit Parade" format from 1982 to
1984. The format was fine-tuned to Adult Standards in 1985. The WRTH
calls and Adult Standards format were dropped in 1988, converting to
all-oldies ('50s and '60s) WKLL. After only 11 months with the format,
they became all-business WCEO. While this was going on, WEW-770
augmented it's longstanding Big Band format with a satellite-fed version
of "Music of Your Life". In 1990, WIL-1430 dropped it's longstanding C&W
format for Adult Standards (from Westwood One, with the exception of
Johnny Rabbitt in the morning), and changed calls to WRTH at the
beginning of 1991. KMOX-1120 ran Easy Listening music overnights on a
daily basis (first with John McCormick on weekdays and Tony Oren on
weekends, then Oren alone, then Ralph Graczak, Jr.) until 1993, then
went to Sunday mornings only until dropping Easy Listening altogether at
the beginning of 1999. The only music left on KMOX is traditional Jazz
on Saturday nights. The closest Easy Listening station to St. Louis now,
believe it or not, is WRSA-96.9 Decatur/Huntsville, AL (which I heard
last summer).

Eric Bueneman - N0UIHEric@xxxxxxx

Just a note to let you know that effective April 25, 1999, the
all-sports format that's currently on KFNS-590 Wood River, IL is now
simulcast on KZMM-100.7 Troy, MO. Both stations use the AM slogan, "Fans
590". A call change on 100.7 to KFNS-FM is pending. The AM and FM are on
opposite ends of town (590 is 1 kW day and night, two directional
patterns, 100.7 has an ERP of 6 kW at 328 feet above average terrain).

**Tim Kridel - tim.kridel@xxxxxxxx

I have a Drake R8 that's run without a problem since I bought it new
several years ago. This past week, we had a couple of severe
thunderstorms with lightning. This morning, I turned on the rig, and the
display looked weird: Only parts of the digits were displayed, and most
of the badges (e.g., ANT, AGC) weren't displayed at all. Everything else
worked normally. I could tune in stations, turn off the backlight, etc.
I pulled the AC and DC fuses, but neither appeared burnt. So, I just
stuck them back in, turned on the power and the display was back to
normal. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm suspect that it had
something to do with the lightning.

**ragnar danneskjold - lwdxer@xxxxxxxx

This is a common thing with microprocessor controlled radios. They are
very succeptible to having their memory scrambled for very small
reasons. I would suspect that you had a near strike with lightning and
the EMP [electro magnetic pulse] from a near strike gave a spike to the
microprocessor and got it confused. You do not have to be connected to
an antenna or the AC mains to get this to happen. Just the size of the
pulse from the lightning could do it if it is within a quarter mile.

The US military has this planned as a tactic if there is a nuclear war,
to knock out an enemys electronics. A weapon would be detonated far
above the atmosphere where no persons would be injured and the EMP from
that weapon would destroy the microprocessors in the enemys equipment.
You got a small scale taste of it with the lightning.

However, if there is a rapid spike or dip from the power company who
supplies your electricity, then you could get the same result.

When you pulled the fuses and replaced them and plugged your rig into
the wall socket, the microprocessor memory reset and read the CMOS chip
program for controlling your rig and it once again ran fine. I have seen
it with televisions, radios, microwaves, even the control panel on my
dishwasher. It's pretty common. In the summer we get some magnificent
and long lasting electrical storms here in Arizona. Every bit as
spectacular as the ones in Florida. The lucky Floridians get them all
year long. Heh, heh, heh. We don't.

I would bet more on the lightning than the power co. delivering a spike
or dip.

As always, when you see lightning, disconnect the power, antenna AND
ground from your rig to ensure it is not damaged. I found out about
damage from lightning the hard way. It was pretty expensive.

**LFreshwate@xxxxxxx - LFreshwate@xxxxxxx

Tim, Without looking at a diagram, I would only hazzard a guess....
More than likely a "glitch" in the power line did something to the
"memory" As you know, even when the rig is off, it needs a voltage to
sustain certain memory functions.... Pulling the plug (ie: fuses)
"re-set" everything. I have not had that happen to my R-8, even here in
"lightning alley"

**Charles A. Taylor - calltaylor@xxxxxxxx

You would probably be well advised to acquire one of these surge-
protecting outlet strips, the kind with the on/off rockers switch Then,
turn off the switch when you're finished operating your R8B. ALWAYS
disconnect your longwire antenna from your R8B when not using it. I do
the same out here in NC where the isokerauic rate (lightning) approaches
that of Florida.

**Pat Martin - mwdxer@xxxxxxxxx

Yes, my R8 had the same problem a couple years ago after a surge. I
unpluged it and a few seconds later plugged it back in and it has been
fine ever since. Apparently the micro proccessor got confused.

I might mention when the same thing happened to my R8 as mentioned
earlier, it was plugged into a $100 surge protector too.

**Charles Taylor - Charles_Taylor@xxxxxxxxxxxx

I fired off my observations too soon on the R8B. I was supposing that
the set has a volatile memory that is kept alive from the set's power
supply. The power supply is "live" whether or not the set is "on" or
"off."

If it has a volatile memory, then maybe youse guys would an UPS to power
the set while its disconnected from the mains.

I got an APC 500VA UPS for my computer, as it wants continuous electric
power for "rapid resume". I don't want it connected to the mains because
of glitches riding in caused by switching in the neighborhood.

I think APC makes a 200 VA UPS, more than enough for an R8B.

**LFreshwate@xxxxxxx - LFreshwate@xxxxxxx

Everything "should" be on a UPS. Todays UPS's offer some "surge"
protection as well as battery back-up..... Helps keep the "glitshes" out
of your system.

I run my R-8 on the same UPS as my computer system. Here in lightning
alley, I "ground" the long wire when not in use.

Anyone know who the "Radio Romantica" on 700 kHz Is that I heard around
1200 UTC last night? (Sat nite-Sun morn) Good signal , nice ballades, no
comercials, no TC, no location, just the Radio Romantica ID w/OM is all
I heard.

**Richard Toebe - richtoebe@xxxxxxx

KVRG-700 in Soledad, CA runs "Radio Romantica", // KBRG-100.3 in San
Jose (Soledad is a little south of Salinas.) They're a semi-local to
me, I hear them day and night.

2AM "The Edge" or someone else... according to a note from 2ME, both the
Melbourne and Sydney transmitters are on 1638...

I have a weak fluttery station on 1500 that I believe to be in Japanese.
Is there a Californian near SF that has this programming?

**Dennis Gibson - dcgibson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Ragnar - KSJX in San Jose is Asian.

William C. Demmery - wdemmery@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Heard this morning (April 29), between 06:30 and 07:05, on a DX-440,
barefoot, in English, on approx. two-minute loop:

"Construction is underway on a brand new radio station, exclusively for
(Hunterton? -- something phonetically similar) County. Find out what
everyone will be talking about, May 1st, 3pm."

Signal is bearing roughly southeast from my location in Ottawa and is
subject to fading, growing weaker as the morning progresses, so it's
probably semi-local and couldn't be a groundwave catch.

Heard at 07:00 just before the tape-loop announcement on 1040:
something sounding like "WKAR."

Doing some research on the Internet, I conclude that the station in
question must be an existing one: WJHR-1040, Flemington, NJ -- which
happens to be located in Hunterdon County. Obviously, they are
preparing for a format change.
