Via Chris Hambly in Victoria, station 3AB Melbourne 1116 has moved to
87.8 FM, apparently around mid August. This is paving the way for 3AK to
move to this frequency early next year.
Following up my log last night of Radio Bougainville 5985, this is on
again tonight and not in parallel with 3385, though the latter is still
a bit weak to get an ID off. I will give it a go on the hour though.

Acc. to the A-DX mailing list (16 Sep), AFN Frankfurt 873 kHz has been
off the air after a lightning hit the transmitting site. It is unclear
how soon the station will be back.

***Wolfgang W. Bueschel - BueschelW@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

AFN mediumwave station on 873 kHz OFF
MW 873 kHZ, 150 kW directional three mast installation, screened
towards Moscow - Russia.
AFN - American Forces Network main Center European MW outlet
STRUCK of LIGHTNING, on Friday 15th?
Hoi folks, since yesterday AFN [Frankfurt] Weiskirchen on MW 873 kHz is
off the air totally. Horst Schmidt told in A-DX Newsletter that AFN
announced on AFN 2nd network via FM tx Feldberg on Taunus lower mountain
98.7 MHz, 100 kW, due of a STRUCK of LIGHTNING the MW outlet is totally
out of service for the time being.
Here in southern Germany, I heard Stara Zagora Bulgaria yesterday
afternoon, and the Spanish stn today morning at 0500 UTC, instead.

Spotted by Chris Hambly of Melbourne last night, 2AM Sydney 1620 is
now IDing as 2KM and playing oldies.
Apparently 2KY-1017 has taken over the station (it is co-sited with
the 2KY 1017 transmitter), and is now running it's own programming even
though the license is still held by Tourist Radio, the operators of 2AM.
Expect more action!
QSL route for this new station is *not* via John Wright, but
presumably via 2KY 1017 Racing Radio.

I am not 100% sure but I think KAPR 930 in Douglas is no longer
Ranchera and now Classic Rock playing music from the 70s. If anyone else
can hear it, let me know please.

This is a slightly modified version of the Media Network Newsletter
being sent out today:
In the 21 September edition of the Media Network radio show, we're
making an major announcement. Since you're a keen listener, we want to
share the news with you directly, just in case you can't hear the show
this Thursday.
Media Network is going to switch to becoming a WEB-ONLY production as
from the end of October. The last edition of the radio show will air on
Thursday 26th October.
Surprised? We bet you are. But following the departure of Diana
Janssen, we've taken the opportunity to re-evaluate the situation, and
look at where things are heading.
Radio Netherlands is moving into a new era, and it's essential that
the marriage of traditional and new technology happens in the right way.
Media Network is unashamedly a specialist show. The secret is to take
technology facts and turn them into an acoustic theatre...where the
safari documentaries have scored the best by far. As the business
broadens, it takes more research to get it right and keep it fresh. So
the radio programme would require greater and greater investment in time
and effort in order to maintain its leading position.
It's time that radio producer and host Jonathan Marks simply doesn't
have. Since Diana's departure he assumed the additional roles that Diana
has vacated. This is in addition to his main corporate role as Radio
Netherlands' Director of Programmes - Radio, TV and Internet. Clearly he
cannot do all these things and continue to produce a weekly show of the
high standard that we strive for, and you deserve. So, after much
consideration, we've decided that the radio show should end its almost
20 year run while at its listening peak. There has never been more
response than we get now.
"It has been enormous fun", says Jonathan "but this seems a good point
to hang up the headphones and step back from the microphone. I have
hundreds of people out there to thank for the radio show's success over
the last 20 years. I think we all worked hard to show that good
international broadcasting comes from the heart".
But Media Network, as a "brand", is not disappearing - far from it.
Although the radio show will cease to exist, Andy Sennitt will maintain
and expand Media Network's web presence. Media Network will be back in
the pioneering phase again, looking at new ways to present media news,
analysis and background features using the latest Internet technology.
Content-wise, Media Network will continue to be 'user driven', but
even more so. We'll be adding interactive elements that enable you to
react immediately to what you see, hear and read. We'll continue to
cover radio and TV developments from longwave right up to the satellite
bands, as well as all forms of new media. We'll also be delving into the
radio archives of the past two decades and digitizing some of the most
memorable features.
The final edition of the radio show, on 26 October, is sure to become
a collectors' item. In the meantime, after this week's show we'll be
repeating the most requested Media Network specials over the next few
weeks.
To react directly to this message, please use ONLY the E-mail address
media@xxxxxxx

As previously reported (sorry for the delay of this posting) a Chinese
speaking station has been noted on 1350.7v last week; the station was
clearly audible even here last friday, with a 150m longwire even if only
for few minutes @0003 UTC . The signal faded out too soon to check for
// frequencies. Have you Cristoph Mayer and Giampaolo Galassi been able
to check them?. . Audio seemed a little sloppy, but you know, I'm using
a JRC 525... ;-))).

I was really excited about these two great openings. They were, by far,
the best MW DX I've ever heard from this relatively inland location.
Beside the loggings above, there were at least weak hets on many of the
other international channels at various times during the opening. Really
a thrill, even though I chose not to stay on any of the several new-for-
me stations. I wonder what it was like out at the Pacific shore? Or here
at home at the bottom of the sunspot cycle.

Yesterday (Sep 15th)I heard at 2100 and later on a very strong station
on 1593 kHz completely covering the other stations there. It is
obviously the old UCB outlet with programmes for Christian "Cross
Rhythms Radio", which was announced many times. At 2100 there was an
IRN-news bulletin. The identification said "24 hours a day" and it
really was, because the following morning at 0500- there was a programme
from "VJAM - interactive radio for the new generation". They had a
hotline number 0800-7001494 for youths under 25 to phone in with their
prayer requests. They also gave a web site: www.vjam.com , but I was
unfortunately denied to watch it. Cross Rhythm could be find on
crossrhythms.co.uk/radio , but nothing was said about these 1593-
transmissions.

Yesterday evening I had quite good reception of Guinea. I never thought
to achieve such MW-results before I had an ALA 1530 antenna. On my

1180 CUBA 9/17 0522-0602 Noted possibly as many as 3 Cuban stations
putting a big dent in KERI-CA tonight (KYET-AZ still presumably
off). Strongest signal was IDing as Radio Rebelde and had long
speeches that frequently mentioned the Cuban Olympic team. At
times, there appeared to be 2 transmitters running this program
as a slight "echo" was noted. Another station underneath was
running Cuban music and talking about Cuba, but I did not hear
any specific ID, so I suppose it could have been Marti or
       something else. (TRH-CA)

On 1287 Basildon Hospital Radio was testing and heard with several
short and one long beep after rocksong followed by 'BHR 1287 testing',
mentioning website and e-mail address. Time: 0835. At 1002 male with
'operated by Basildon Hospital Radio'. Often readable signal.
On 1350 Radio Yare around 0901 with 'You're listening to Radio Yare'.
Both received for the first time. Weak to poor.
On 549 UCB, Monaghan very strong again with some qrm DLF but readable
signal and ID at 1000.
On 630 NRK, Vigra very weak with religious service at 0915 // 1314.

*** COMMENTS ***

September brought two good non-solo DX sessions within a
week.
I'd arranged to meet Kent Winrich (K9EZ) of Wisconsin while he was in
the Boston area on a business trip. On Tuesday 12 SEP, he met me out at
Granite Pier in Rockport, MA for a sunset-period after-work mini-
DXpedition. We enjoyed hearing numerous loud signals from southwestern
Europe and northern Africa. Some of these were pushing S9+30 or better,
like Morocco-612 that was totally "smoking" WGIR-NH / CHNC-PQ on
adjacent 610. Kent said he'd be happy to hear even one Trans-Atlantic at
his midwestern home QTH. I referred him to master foreign DXer Neil
Kazaross of metro-Chicago for suggested stations and times. I know that
some of the big boomers like Norway-1314 and Saudi Arabia-1521 have made
it out there occasionally. Obviously you don't get East Coast results
there on TA's, but he might hear a few of them. In other DX, he'd have
at least a prayer of a chance of hearing something Trans-Pacific. I
don't think a TP has been logged in New England in at least 15 years
(when Ray Moore got a few Aussie X-banders before US stations started to
proliferate above 1600). One thing I mentioned to Kent was that he might
want to look for a lakeside site in northern MI, WI, or MN and run a
Beverage due north to look for Trans-Polar Russians, Indians, etc. If he
could bag some of this DX on a good night, it just might breathe life
into midwesterners' conceptions about foreign MW DXing in their part of
the world. Maybe Trans-Polar would be something at which they could have
more success than DXers along the Atlantic and Pacific shores of North
America (where loud transoceanic signals tend to cover up any weaker
Trans-Polar stations on the same 9 kHz frequency spacing plan). As we
wrapped up the DX session around 9 p.m. local, Kent said he had fun and
that he was interested in getting a phasing unit and trying some
different antennas back home.
On Saturday 16 SEP, I had a nice visit with Vern Brownell (W1VB) in
Chatham, MA. Two weeks earlier I'd gone out to his excellent seaside QTH
and I did a consult on a DX-worthy antenna system that would help combat
local electrical noise. This time around I brought the materials for the
antenna and set it up. The main element is a one-turn square loop,
approximately 7 feet / 2.14 m per side. This is mounted vertically and
aimed for maximum pick-up on an east-west axis. The wire is supported on
a wooden frame with cement blocks to keep it from blowing away during
high winds. The loop feeds a 1:1 balun whose other turn goes to the
coaxial cable which runs back to the "ham shack" room of the house.
Inside the house, the coaxial cable goes to the input of a broadband
amplifier with about 17 dB of gain. The amplifier's output feeds channel
1 of a DXP-2 phasing unit. Channel 2 of the phasing unit is connected to
Vern's multiband trap vertical (40 m - 6 m ham bands). Eventually a
second loop will be installed at a right angle to the first one. That
would be fed to phaser Channel 2 instead of the whip; this should reduce
electrical noise to an even greater extent than the present set-up. At
2125 UTC, with the sun still well above the horizon, Saudi-1521 and
other MW Trans-Atlantics were audible on my Drake R8A as soon as we were
done setting up the antenna system. The next 2 hours brought in some
huge signals from the Mediterranean area before conditions gradually
deteriorated. Loggings are in the report above. A highlight was hearing
English and French news (including Italian Olympic team results) from
Italy-846. The signal was very strong: there didn't seem to be any
reduction in power from any other time I'd heard this. Vern now has both
a location and an antenna system that should bring him a lot of good DX.
I encouraged him to join the National Radio Club since that's where most
of the MW DXing talent in the eastern USA and Canada may be found.

My colleague from the Netherlands asked me some days ago about a
strange Radio Mayak signal on 1206.1. This - but very weak signal - also
noted here in St.Petersburg, for example, between 1800 and 2000 UTC.
1206 is out-of-scheduled Radio Mayak frequency and no any ideas
regarding the exact location. Former Moscow-based Radio Echo of Moscow

Last night (17 SEP) I heard GUINEA for the first time! 1385.91 kHz after
2300 UTC with talk in French, followed by native singing and lively
vernacular talk. QRM by Iran 1386.04 kHz. At peaks quite nice signals
from Guinea (OK, the signal was not good too much, but you know it - a
station always sounds great when you hear it for the first time...)

Greetings. Heard the following last (Sunday) evening. Last week
certain DXers were sure that this was Syria and others were positive it
was not Syria. Does anyone know definitely?

string instrument like the oud or lute, man in Arabic apparently
reciting from the Koran. Direction just about due east
indicating Morocco or Algeria. I'll try again Monday evening but
       any help appeciated.
