Hello to all of you !

I had quite some success with DX'ing last night. A short-lived Trans-Atlantic opening brought the best Spaniard audio this month on 585 along with an unID jazz station *just below 570 kHz* who was only audible when the radio was oriented perpendicular to the E-W directions and different from 560. Is RTE Radio One playing any jazz music ? Any chance it was them ? It didn't last too long and after 0025 UTC (7:25 PM local and EST) all the TA action was finished, but the southern action was quite good, probably a bit above-average, but not too good. I heard Dominican Republic on 570 and the new 770 Rebelde among others, but the most interesting catche was on the extended dial on 1620 where I heard what sounded like the second harmonic of the 250 kW Colombian big gun on 1620 while in the car in Pointe-Clerc. I wonder if others heard this one as well. Really intriguing ! A pure mystery was found after local midnight on 1480 with mostly Mexican music; I really wonder who this might be, definitively not the NYC Spanish domestic. Also interesting was Spanish romantic music on 720, from Colombia or Venezuela.

Well, into the logs now:

Trans-Atlantic DX:

567 unID, NOV 26 0017 - jazz music, "just below" the 570 domestic mess, with no space of slight splash between the 560 and 570 channels like when you tune to the 560 kHz American channel, which was audible when aimed N-S with the usual domestic mess. Could hear a high-frequency tiring growl (probably a heterodyne). Poor and didn't last long. (Chiochiu-QC)

585 SPAIN, Radio Nacional de España, Madrid NOV 25 2346 - Fair w/ SS discussion pgm. Some slight 580 / 590 splash and the fact the signal didn't last very long prevented me from hearing many details, but the best reception of these 600 kW powerful guys this month so far. (Chiochiu-QC)

Pan-American DX:

555 ST. KITTS, ZIZ, Basseterre NOV 26 0000 - Very good / huge through annoying neighbor's annoying computer growl with soca music. + NOV 26 0417 - Good reception with a mixture of ragga, soca and calypso and up-beat Caribbean English announcer. Listened to this as I readed IDXD. (Chiochiu-QC)

570 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC, HIMS, Santo Domingo / CUBA, CMDC, Radio Reloj, Pilon NOV 25 2359 - Bachata music over "RR" morse code IDs. No ID from the assumed Dominican. (Chiochiu-QC)

600 CUBA, CMKV, Radio Rebelde, Urbano Norris NOV 26 0026 - In the middle of the baseball game news announcements "...informacion...Radio Rebelde, cadena nacional". + NOV 26 0048 - announcement of a game tomorrow "a la seis de la tarde" (6 PM local) between Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba. + NOV 26 0556 - End of salsa tune, then talk by man about the history of Cuba, then top-of-the-hour jingle with canned ID over it "Rebelde, La Havana; emisora de la revolución". Almost always huge. After 670, this is the most reliable Rebelde MW frequency in the Montreal area, also heard at very good level on the car-radio around 0110 UTC while walking for buying pizzas and Maxell tapes. (Chiochiu-QC)

670 CUBA, Radio Rebelde, (CMQ or CMBA ?), Arroyo Arrenas NOV 26 0600+ Huge in WSCR null with no noticeable interference from WFAN-660 or local CINF-690. Occasional interference from a second station which had woman in Spanish with political news. Tropical and romantic music under Rebelde at times. Probably WWFE and / or Radio Rumbos. What was odd was that between the woman announcements, there weren't any Noti-Rumbos dorbells like it's usually done by this station. (Chiochiu-QC)

710 CUBA, Radio Rebelde, several possibilities NOV 26 0313 - // 600 and 670. Good, getting by co-channel WOR. (Chiochiu-QC)

720 unID (YVQE or HJAN ?) NOV 26 0028 - Spanish romantic music, very poor with CKAC-730 nulled as much as possible and WGN-720 semi-nulled. (Chiochiu-QC)

750 VENEZUELA, YVKS, Caracas NOV 25-26 UTC - difficult last night because co-channel WSB Atlanta was often almost local-like. (Chiochiu-QC)

760 COLOMBIA, HJAJ, RCN, Barranquilla NOV 26 0042 - Nx, "RCN La radio de Colombia" new dance-music jingle followed by Colombian news. Lots of ads. Residual WJR stronger than in the past and this one is weaker than in the past. Venezuela is way much easier to log in Montreal than Colombia, logged 12 YVs from 6 different states but only 7 or 8 Colombians. (Chiochiu-QC)

770 CUBA, Radio Rebelde NOV 26 0040 - Cuban baseball game // other Rebeldes, burying WABC. (Chiochiu-QC)

780 VENEZUELA, YVNM, Radio Coro, Coro, Falcon NOV 26 0035 - with ads. Briefly good in WBBM null with local splatter. Also heard a few minutes later with very happy cumbia melodies, certainly from the Discoteca del Pueblo program they seem to carry on Friday nights, as heard in the beginning of this month. (Chiochiu-QC)

890 CUBA, CMDZ, Radio Progreso, Chambas NOV 26 0106 - Tropical song followed by a Bee Gees one. Fair in WLS null. (Chiochiu-QC)

900 CUBA, CMKP, Radio Progreso, Cacocum, NOV 26 0105 - Tropical tune // and almost as good as 890. (Chiochiu-QC)

1480 unID (Mexico or a domestic) NOV 26 0515 - Romantic mariachi, "... Sabrosura ..." mostly undeciphrable break followed by Daddy Yankee's worldwide reggeaton hit Gazolina, then mostly norteña oriented ranchera in style of Los Tigres del Norte, though I heard one classic rock Spanish song too. 90% of the music was Mexican. A domestic is suspected, though Mexico is also remotely possible but very unlikely (especially considering the low-powered XE transmitters using 1480 and the difficulty of hearing Mexico at all in Montreal). Occasionally covered by 1 or 2 domestic talkers, but mostly atop. Any ideas ? The signal was only audible on the E-W so it would be in the Mid-west or maybe northern Mexico. Definitively not the NYC SS station on this channel. (Chiochiu-QC)

1620H COLOMBIA, HJCY Caracol, Santa Fe de Bogota NOV 26 0114 - Tentative (this would be second harmonic of HJCY-810) ! Tune-in to an ID I partially deciphrated "...Cadena Nacional..." and "Hache-Jota..." Colombian call letters. The last letter sounded like "Jie" and they are many hispanofonic areas where instead of "I Grécá"; Colombia is one of them. This was followed by some kind of tropical Andean music; difficult to tell as they were mixed with a second weaker station from which I couldn't tell much (probably previously logged WDHP which is very widely heard). I was in the car in Pointe-Clerc, fortunately, since where I live 1620 is useless because of the awful CFAV Radio Boomer (1570) pest in Laval that makes 1620 extremely tiring and quite useless even when I null the 1610 Haitian local. Bjorn, can you hear this one down in Quito ? (Chiochiu-QC)

To conclude, I hope tonight conditions will stay good. Looking forward listening to shortwave while working on mathematics later this afternoon.

Be the good DX stuff with you !
Bogdan
