[HCDX] Logs from the past evening

Report from:

Equipment:
Sanyo MCD-S830 portable with ferrite bar antenna

AM:
Trans-Atlantic DX:

585 SPAIN, Radio Nacional de España, Madrid DEC 7 2335 - Poor to somewhat fair at tune-in with discussion about Christmas between woman and man announcers followed by a rock tune at 2339 then more discussion. During the rock tune, they got VERY loud (!). + DEC 8 0222 - Man and woman in discussion about whearever medecine was the only essential thing for the quality of life, peaked very loud again at 0235 after I typed a NYC DXer who couldn't hear them at all. My best reception of this station since the middle of October and by far ! (Chiochiu-QC)

1134 CROATIA, Zadar DEC 7 - News until 0030 on DEC 8 UTC and OFTEN very loud (a bit more reliable than Spain-585 which got to pleasant listening levels only on 2 occasions and quite briefly), before and after 0000. They had some nice music, including Croatian rock and during an excellent Croatian dance tune at 0046 they briefly got very good ! (Chiochiu-QC)

Pan-American DX:

780 VENEZUELA, YVNM, Coro, estado Falcón DEC 7 2350 - Pretty good in WBBM null with anniversaries. Also good at 0053 with religious talk which suprisingly wasn't Chritsmas related (they probably know Jesus Christ was the biggest masochist the Earth ever saw - Bogdan). (Chiochiu-QC)

FM:
104.5, unID 2043 EST - Mention of "costumer" during ad surfaced for a second over fair-strenght semi-local CFLG Variety 104. Meteor scatter reception. (Chiochiu-car-QC)

I've noted RVC-530 often excellent, ZIZ-555 faded in and got quickly good to very good at 0342 UTC with soca music programming. They faded in VERY LATE, a few weeks ago I got them at 2214 UTC. RCR-750 was for at least the third time this season weaker than Coro-780 which is running considerably less power. They were never quite over WSB. Radio Progreso 890 was very poor the past evening. Conditions the past evening were below average to Latin America and the Caribbean, but almost excellent to Europe. I say ALMOST, because while Spain-585 was on two occasions very loud, they weren't as stable for pleasant listening as in the beginning of October when they were REALLY excellent.

On FM, while buying Libanese Shawarma food from the Amir restaurant, while looking for some good music on the locals and semi-locals (AM DX is almost impossible, because the radio tune in 10 kHz increments and the whip antenna is omnidirectionnal; except during auroras where domestics are completly absorbed by the D layer so co-channel Latins don't need nulling in order to be audible), I heard a MS signal on 104.5 that was surely related to the Geminids shower. It was an unexpected bonus to this report. It reminds me of the mini-Es season that occurs from late November through early January related to residual effects of Sporadic-Es in the Southern hemisphere where it is the time of the summer solstice. I wonder if any of you, at least those into FM, got any E-skip in December or not. The FM band is more crowded than AM, for me in Montreal, and with the new jazz local on 91.9, Radio Coco in Havana on 91.7 will be almost impossible, unfortunately.

I will read a few messages I just received, then will DX. Looks like I will be able to introduce some new persons to AM Band DXing soon, including some classmates.

I seem to get earlier and earlier to school and now I'm always able to attend at least the 2nd period.

Be the good DX stuff with you !
Bogdan
