I did not mean to say that was a direct cause and effect.  I have watched several lines of thunderstorms on the vaisala map and not had any Es to go along with them.  I have also had Es that was in direct line with thunderstorms, and the distance between the stations received to the thunderstorms was roughly the same as the distance between the storms and me.  I have also had Es from stations who had tornadic activity sitting right on top of them.  Major ionization occurs but that doesn't mean it will translate to great reception.  I didn't mean to imply 100% causality, just as I can't always receive reflections off of satellites.  You either do or you don't, and even if you can fine tune your approach, you don't have God-like powers.

severe weather frontal boundaries do accompany Es in some cases - it
can be either near the tx or rx or both. I've noted this a number of
times over the years. In fact my first Es reception was one of those.
I agree no one has proven any causative relationship, but they do
appear together often enough to be more than coincidental.
