Re: [IRCA] KNRV AM-1150 to drop local programming

According to the Federal Census Bureau (via local TV newscast), the Hispanic population in Denver comprises more than 50% of the total population. So, it's not surprising Spanish-language stations would do so well. I believe as of 5 years ago (maybe longer) there were no Spanish-language FM stations in the area. There are at least two now on FM, seven on AM: 1090, 1150, 1170 (Windsor), 1220, 1280, 1450 (Greeley), and 1650.

The Denver Business Journal reported today that Denver radio station
KNRV-AM will drop its Spanish-language local news and sports programming
and instead carry a national satellite feed from Radio Formula Satellite
Network beginning August 1st.

In a statement, Heberto Villers-Limas, station president and CEO of
station owner New Radio Venture Inc., said his painful decision to
discontinue local programming had nothing to do with the results of the
radio operations, but rather is the result of a conflict between the
station and shareholders. He did not elaborate.

Another New Radio Venture Spanish station, KNUV-AM In Phoenix, plans to
close down at the end of July, The Associated Press reported Tuesday,
saying investors decided to pull the plug in the wake of advertising
budget cuts.

New Radio Venture will be dissolved in coming months, Villers-Limas
said, but he hopes to form a new company.

On the whole, stations targeting the Latino market have been doing well
in Denver. Mexican-regional music station KXPK-FM is No. 3 in the latest
Arbitron rankings (behind talk-news outlet KOA-AM and country station
KYGO-FM) with a 5.8 share. Three other Latino-themed music stations
KJMN-FM (No. 19, 1.4 share), KBNO-AM (No. 21 with a 1.2 share) and
KMXA-AM (No. 23, 1.0) have been among the fastest-growing stations in
the market, according to Denver Business Journal research.
