0405
BOOKS AND WRITING - in-depth discussions focusing on books, ideas and writing with Ramona Koval. This week: "Edinburgh 2004 - Alexander McCall Smith + Dame Muriel Spark + Robyn Rowland". This week an hysterical tale from the pen of Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith, who (wisely or unwisely) accepted the invitation to write a serialised novel for The Scotsman newspaper. It was only after he'd accepted the task that the newspaper told him that the instalments would be daily, not weekly ... a cautionary tale, perhaps, for overly-confident writers. The result however, was a novel called 44 Scotland Street and we hear an excerpt from this tale of Edinburgh's more Bohemian side. [T;%]
0434
BOOK TALK - a mix of reviews, critical discussion and a look at the latest developments in publishing with Amanda Smith. This week: "In Graham Greene’s Footsteps". [%]

0505
AUSTRALIAN EXPRESS - a magazine about life in Australia, hosted by Roger Broadbent. This week, Roger writes, "This week the Australian Express takes you to the country where the emphasis is on music. We begin by meeting country music star Lee Kernaghan whose latest album, ‘The Best of…..’ is just about to hit the record stores. It follows his top selling album ‘Electric Rodeo’ which was also awarded this year’s Album of the Year Golden Guitar at the annual Tamworth music festival. Lee has been part of
Australia’s country music scene for a decade and is now considered it’s top male performer. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing. Early in his career he considered giving it all away. Fortunately he didn’t! And we remain in the country for a report about a most unusual musical instrument - a length of fencing wire. Yes some enterprising souls, one of them calls himself a ‘noise artist’, are harnessing the wind and other natural elements to produce … well, noise …, which they call music. Literally from the sublime to the ridiculous. What else do you expect from Roger Broadbent and his Australian Express?"
0532
ALL IN THE MIND - a weekly foray into the mental universe, the mind, brain and behaviour with Lynne Malcolm. This week: "Grey Power and Brain Matter". Can our brains age gracefully in the 21st century? We hear from Pennsylvania State University's Professor K. Warner Schaie, leader of the world famous Seattle Longitudinal Study, considered to be one of the most extensive psychological studies into aging in world
history. It's even been instrumental in lifting the retirement age in the United States! After half a century's work, Professor Shaie has discovered many secrets to maintaining mental strength in old age, and they may surprise you. [%]

His fellow Americans did not, in the main, agree with him. Fukuyama dissects why the Democrats lost the election and also looks at the phenomenon of state-building. The Americans have had a lot of experience at it - ever since they went into Germany and Japan post World War 2. But it seems that each time they have to re-invent the wheel - the best ways to intervene in a country to encourage democracy get forgotten. Fukuyama discusses with Geraldine Doogue what the US should be doing in Iraq and Afghanistan to foster democracy. [%]
