To answer my own question:
- The AM band is acting like it does in daytime: the "fringe" stations from 
places like Ottawa and the Plattsburgh/Burlington region aren't washed out by 
distant stations. 1570 kHz is crystal clear when it is usually drowned out by 
Radio Disney.
- With a quick scanning through the shortwave bands, I declare SW reception 
dead. Not like you needed me to tell you.  :-)
