Glenn Hauser logs November 21-22, 2022
Tuesday, November 22 2022

Hauser
** CHINA [and non]. 11590, Nov 21 at 1614, Firedragon traditional
instrumental music-only jamming, S7/S9 direct, about equal level to
Chinese talk: RFA via TINIAN scheduled at 1600-1900. The CC could
otherwise be additional CNR1 jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 10080, Nov 21 at 0723, S9+10 open carrier but
scratchy, must be that RHC 5040 transmitter again radiating on 2X
instead. Could be serious QRM to legal fundamental transmitters in
aero band. EiBi shows on 10081, 24h HFDL from Shannon, San
Francisco.

What is HFDL?? EiBi`s readme.txt explains only: ``HFDL Squitter
(Aircraft comms station)``. Wikipedia: ``High Frequency Data Link
(HFDL) is an ACARS communications medium used to exchange data such as
Aeronautical Operational Control (AOC) messages, Controller Pilot Data
Link Communications (CPDLC) messages and Automatic Dependent
Surveillance (ADS) messages between aircraft end-systems and
corresponding ground-based HFDL ground stations. Using the unique
propagation characteristics of high-frequency radio waves, the ground
stations provide data link communications to properly equipped
aircraft operating anywhere in the world. As a result, pilots can
always communicate with someone on the ground.``

But what does it sound like on an ordinary radio? And what is
squitter? Explanation from:
https://skybrary.aero/articles/squitter

``The term "squitter" refers to a random broadcast of data occurring
either intentionally or in response to noise.

Description: Mode-S transponders automatically send periodic burst
transmissions called "squitters". These transmissions are self
generated and are not in response to interrogations from a secondary
surveillance radar (SSR) system. The information sent in these burst
transmission serves several purposes including:

Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) - Squitter information
includes aircraft location and vertical speed. This information is
used by ACAS systems on other aircraft to identify potential
conflicts.
Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) - An extended
squitter is a message or series of messages which broadcast an
aircraft's identification, GPS position, projected aircraft trajectory
and navigation system status to allow controllers to accurately track
the aircraft`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11760, Nov 21 at 2052, RHC in English, S9+10/20 direct, while
this frequency is supposed to be in a break unlike // 15140, weaker
S9/+10 and undermodulated. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 5990, Nov 22 at 0046, CRI Spanish relay going OK for a
change; M&W conversation sounds similar on S9/+10, 6000, which is JBM,
but no //, so that must really be the `Mesa Redonda` TV soundtrack on
RHC. Should easily confirm that by // 11950 --- but that`s S9+10/20 of
dead air! Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9440, Nov 21 at 2150, R. Cairo direct, S1/S4 humwhine but
trace of undermodulated English talk. Something`s always egregious in
Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Monday Nov 21 at 2300, token English from REE is VG
S9+10/25 into Maryland SDR. After the news, at 2305, due to an
exhibition, `Spain thru the eyes of Arabs`, interview with ambassador
from Arab League about Spain being more highly regarded in the Arab
world than European colonial powers. What?! Spain was too, don`t
forget Morocco/Western Sahara, Guinea Ecuatorial -- but true, not
further into Arab world. However, plenty of areas and countries were
colonized, notably in the Américas, Pacífico. See:
https://www.worldatlas.com/geography/the-former-spanish-colonies.html
Of course, Arabs colonized Spain long before vice versa.

No competition from Turkey for the 2300 audience -- me and who else?
which fails to appear at all, q.v. Related topic follows at 2317, a
flamenco festival at Sadler`s Wells:
https://www.sadlerswells.com/flamenco-festival-2022/
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [non]. 5960, Nov 21 at 2259*, BBC quits Oman, but by 2300 no
show from Voice of Turkey - nothing into UTwente. I squelch it in case
it appear while listening to SPAIN, q.v. Aha, signal on late at *2311,
but it`s still not VOT, rather Chinese from Urumqi, EAST TURKISTAN,
land of imperialist ChiCom genocide against Uyghurs and other Moslems.
Still no TRT at 2330 after Spainglish finishes. Something`s always
erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U K [non]. 12065, Nov 21 at 1617, S9/+20 of BBC English report from
Qatar, not play-by-play if a SBG be ongoing right now. Singapore relay
scheduled 1300-1900, also via Oman at 12-13. One of best
extracontinental signals on band.

12095, Nov 21 at 1618, equally good signal, S9+10/20 in Korean and
musical ditty, which is also BBC via SINGAPORE at 1530-1830 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2165 monitoring: not from 0400 UT
Monday November 21 on WBCQ Area 51, 6160 minus 62 Hz = 6159.938 into
Maryland SDR, S5/S8. Instead W.D.C.D. program ID, 0403 someone`s
audition tape as a DJ, real? Continues with strange stuff until 0429
WOR suddenly starts, instead of HRI. After WOR at 0458, opening of
recreated `Amos & Andy`, but cut to TOMBS 0500 on SW, while A&A
continues on A51 webcast. I guess a runover anomaly, WOR still
supposed to be at 0400? Next:

0130 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed by Cuba]
0030 UT Wednesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

About WOR podcasts, from Keith Weston Nov 21: ``Glenn, I *think*
everything is back to normal, but won’t know until a new episode is
posted by you this or next week. Keith`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WTWW: another update from George McClintock on Nov 21: Leap
of Faith registration with state of TN had expired, but he has now
renewed it. No longer seems to be a fraudulent attempt at that by
third party, but George`s renewal due notice in the mail may have been
intercepted. It has also been claimed that all the modulation cards
are on the site, but not so.

I have no more interest in listening to Ted`s hard-sell commercials,
rock and ham shows on WRMI than on WTWW, but FWIW, this from William
Pietschman, Nov 20:
``Ted Randall is back --- WRMI Legends (Ted Randall & Co.) is on:
5:00-6:00 pm Eastern Time daily on 9395 kHz
6:00-7:00 pm ET daily on 5950 kHz
6:00-11:00 pm ET daily on 9455 kHz
9:00-10:00 pm ET Saturday on 5850 kHz
(From Jeff White) 73 DE W8LV BILL -Best Regards from radio station
W8LV located in Pickaway County, Ohio USA. Station Info:
www.hamqth.com/w8lv `` Does this mesh with current WRMI skedgrid?
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
