Glenn Hauser logs January 23-24, 2023

Hauser
** ALGERIA. 9500, Jan 23 at 0144, Qur`an at S7/S9. EiBi shows Béchar
at 00-06. 15410 log, see CUBA [and non] (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 13680, Sunday January 22 at 2132, no signal from
RHC in Esperanto or any other languages altho had been caught here
weeks ago by Ivo Ivanov. Since then he found it on 15140, and that`s
also where I myself also now confirm it rather than the claimed 2330
on 15730 - altho I have not tried to unconfirm it then and there.
Sunday afternoon is supposed to be the second repeat = third airing,
and I`ve already gone over the errors about the first two. Now it`s
S5/S7, after RHC ID and IS from 2130 or 2131. 15140 supposedly quits
other days at 2130 after French. Makes better sense to extend it for a
weekly broadcast rather than pre-empt some other language as would
have been done at 2330. Something`s always wrong at RHC - not this,
but continuing not to announce the real time and frequency.

15140 is among very few signals on 19m now at 2142 Jan 22: just USAs
on 15555-USB, 15770 and 15825, nothing extracontinental except JBA
carrier on 15410, which would be Ouargla, ALGERIA (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 90.1, sometime during the first hour of APM`s
`Performance Today` in the 21-22 UT hour Jan 22 via KUCO, host Fred
Child, who always conveys a sense of wonder and awe with every
announcement, mispronounces Galánta, as in Dances of Galánta by Zoltán
Kodály. He sees the acute accent on the middle A and figures that
means stress-it. But NO, not in Hungarian!

Sesquidecades ago I took R. Budapest`s language course, and somewhere
still have the literature; did not learn much vocabulary, but sure did
learn the fonetix, which comes in handy if you be a classical music
announcer. The accents on Hungarian words indicate the sound of the
vowel, not the stress. Let me quote something just found on the web:

``If you started to learn Hungarian, you already know that Hungarian
words are stressed in the first syllable. This is true until we
pronounce single words no matter how long they are: ég, kalap,
kerítés, olvasandó, kiszámíthatatlan. together. The words in a
sentence are not sliced up when we talk.``

Galánta is a small city now in Slovakia, formerly in Hungary. That`s
the way the Hungarians spell it. A, with no accent, means it`s
pronounced more like ``aw``. With accent, like ``ah``. Therefore:
GAW-lahn-taw, NOT gah-LAHN-tah! Note that composer Kodály is also
stressed initially, not penultimately as too often heard from
otherwise erudite? announcers, who have not bothered to learn the
fonetik schemes of languages they need to pronounce.

It seems the Slovax dispense with the accent but still have to stress
initial: ``In Slovak language the primary word stress is fixed on the
first syllable. The secondary word stress occurs in words with more
than 4 syllables and is fixed on the penultimate syllable. Czech and
Slovak both have a fixed stress placement on the first syllable of the
word.``

While I`m at it, some more L.L.: In proper Hungarian, surnames come
first, e.g. Bartók Béla; but even they seem not to insist upon it to
the rest of the world and those who do it `backwards` may be taken as
pedantic. BTW, those accents mean proper pronunciation is BORE-toke
BAY-law, not ``BAY-lah BAHR-tahk``. At least in this case, no one
seems inclined to stress -tók. Don`t we owe it as a courtesy to make
some effort to pronounce people`s names correctly, especially in
broadcasts?

In Hungarian the letter S, alone, is pronounced SH; while to pronounce
plain S, it`s spelt SZ. Contrary to Polish, where SZ is pronounced SH.
Further: ``Polish is a language with a fixed stress system with
primary stress on the penultimate syllable as a default (Wierzchowska,
1971; Comrie, 1976; Hayes, 1995), irrespective of the morphological
composition of a word.`` There`s a lot more complicated phonology and
orthography in Polish.

Another oddity at KUCO: `Wind & Rhythm`, ``for those who love band
music``, UT Mon Jan 23 at 0200 on 90.1 is playing Xmasmx! Obviously
intended for broadcast in 2022y as mentions someone who died ``earlier
this year`. Surely at least four more episodes have been produced and
availablized since December. Not so petty peeve: Xmasmx VERY overdone
in December if not November, but ignored the rest of the year. Why not
play some Xmasmx in March, or August for a change?? and something else
part of the time during The Season. WWJD? (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SCOTLAND [non]. 5950, UT Mon Jan 23 at 0300, `Encore` via WRMI,
S9/+15 into Athens GA SDR: the same episode heard 26 hours earlier on
5850, but now the Playlist dated 21/1 has been corrected to match the
music we are hearing. BTW I am also hearing bit of pulse jamming
bleeding over from 5955 against nothing; and meant to mention last
night that there were also traces of Cuban jamming on 5850, where
there is absolutely no excuse for it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960.016, Sun Jan 22 at 2346, checking UTwente
whether VOT is not AWOL today? Yes, it`s not, S9+25/35 into UTwente
with somewhat undermod music; 2351 multi-lingual ID reel filler vs
CCCCCCI; 2352 s/off by OM instead of usual YL, not with full English
sked but as if this were the 1330 on 12035; a bit of IS until 2353*
uncovering EAST TURKISTAN. Note exact frequency offsets. VOT often +16
Hz but sometimes +2 Hz, different units? Once off, EAST TURKISTAN
Chinese but seems also with a third carrier displaying as 5960.012,
but that soon goes off leaving Xinjiang PBS as exactly .000 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2174 monitoring: Also confirmed
Sunday January 22 at 2100 on IRRS SW via AM Italia on 1323 kHz only,
S9+3/12 into Parma SDR, as the closest at Noale is too busy. Back on
Friday at 2130, besides Noale, 918 & 1323 were also somewhat audible
at UTwente in Holland.

Also confirmed UT Monday January 23 at 0058 just in time the 0030 on
WRMI 7730, S7/9+5 into Louisiana SDR. So also missed checking whether
the noise blast still covered the first 14 seconds, but bet it did.

Also confirmed from 0401 UT Monday January 23 on WBCQ Area 51, 6160
minus 63 Hz = 6159.937 into Maryland SDR, S6/S8 with inescapable ACI
de 6165 Cuba. Next:

0130 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0030 UT Wednesday WRMI 9395 to NNW
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW [canceled?]
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

** U S A. 15770, Sun Jan 22 at 2248, just as there was an anomaly on
WRMI Saturday during this semihour, so today `Wavescan` is on System H
15770 only, with not // music on 5850, and nothing on imaginary 7730.
WS is part of a talk about WEWN by Jerry Plummer at the 2022 NASB
meeting, shortly before he died unexpectedly: always amazed me how a
PhD would still sound like a hick. And still certainly no R. Tirana as
elsewhere on sked. However these three(?) are now shown as `World
Radio Network` at 2230-2300 on Mon-Thu; so what, pray tell, would that
be?

NAm program schedule for B22 shows, confusingly, not meshing with
WRMI:
22:00 One Decision (Sun)
22:00 Deutsche Welle (Mon-Fri)
22:00 Deutsche Welle (Sat)
22:30:00 Banns Radio International: Copenhagen Calling (Sat)
i.e. without explicitly specifying durations, the 2200 programs would
be one hour long except on Sat (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9955, Jan 22 at 2252, no signal from this WRMI, just pulse
jamming against nothing. Skedgrid shows 9955 supposed to resume from
System B Internet only at 2200 with on Sunday a gospel huxter. Not
propagation, as 9395 & 9455 are inbooming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330, Jan 22 at 2135, WLCR/WBCQ-6 is back on in English but
quite weak S7/S9. Allan has admitted they sometimes power down from
500 to 100 kW, but sounds even less and/or way offbeam to us (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9265VVV, Jan 22 at 2134, WINB is JBM, S9 with terrible rapid
wobble in frequency, much worse than usual. Most obvious with BFO of
course, but also in AM reception. By 2256, modulation level of gospel
huxter is OK but still superwobble. Still so at 0143 recheck Jan 23.
Is that old transmitter about to explode? Something`s wreally wrong at
Red Lion! If same unit, wonder how that would affect DRM (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 1521 kHz, Jan 23 at 0147, JBA het against 1520 KOKC: the
only 9/kHz split audible in a full MW bandscan. Once upon a time would
have been easy to assume the 2000 kW from NW Sa`udi Arabia, but sked
long since curtailed to 1500-2230. There`s another hugie, 500 kW of
Russian from CRI Urumqi, East Turkistan, which is scheduled until
0200, and should still be darkness path. So then I check what UTwente
is getting: Spanish! That would be one 5 kW SER. Would think it should
hear some CRI unless maybe unfavorably direxional, but all unlikely to
deep North America. One other possibility: a domestic spoiler 1 kHz
off-frequency; which IIRC was suspected or IDed some years ago (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
