Glenn Hauser logs May 23-24, 2023
Thursday, May 25 2023

Hauser
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, May 24 at 2056 and 2242 chex, no signal
from LRA36 into Argentine remote altho it did appear last Wednesday
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** AUSTRALIA [and non]. 10125 USB, May 24 at 0643, again hearing phone
QSOs between Oz accents, anomaly on ``30m`` band supposedly non-phone
only; finally copy some calls but not positive of them: VK6AV,
portable 2, as in QRZ.com seems fitting:

VK6AV Australia flag Australia
ALAN GUMMERY, CARAVANING AUSTRALIA, Perth, WA 6000, Australia

``formerly vk4nai. I have been travelling for the past year or so in
my caravan and use a 857d with a screwdriver antenna on the back of my
4×4. recently updated to advanced call while in the west. hope to make
many contacts while mobile. l also use a W5GI dipole when able to get
it up in the trees. 7515938 Last modified: 2016-08-20 00:19:15``

/2 means in NSW now or ACT. Contact with a VK2? Then 0644 maybe
mentioned VK7DM, which would be Tasmania:
VK7DM Australia flag Australia
DAVID MARSLAND, 63 ALFORD STREET, HOWRAH, TAS 7018, Australia
with some equipment photos. HK3QQ keyboard letters also on 10125 CW
but only light clix audible, no obstacle when tuning USB (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** GUAM [and non]. Shortly after my previous report about imminent
typhoon strike affecting SW stations KSDA and KTWR, these further
posts to WOR iog, May 23/24:

``Nothing at 20:10 from KSDA Guam on 9890. Not surprising. 73, Walt
Salmaniw, BC``

``Well, my next check at 2340, 17700 was on with Chinese into S Korea
SDR as sked this hour. Of course, AWR might switch to some other
transmitter site if KSDA disabled. Now both KSDA and KTWR are
scheduled to be off the air until 1000 UT. Glenn``

From Jose Jacob, India, to the WOR iog; at 0250 UT May 24: ``[WOR]
KTWR will be silent today also. Message from KTWR. The station will be
silent tonight also. Typhoon Mawar should make maximum impact to Guam
today.

At 1150 UTC KSDA heard on 15210 kHz but not scheduled 11855, 15500 ?
1230 UTC: 15430 missing, 15710 heard. 1300 UTC: 12055 15505 missing.
15550 tx coming and going. KSDA 1330 UTC: all 15255 15430 15550
missing today. Thanking you, Yours sincerely, Jose Jacob, VU2JOS,
National Institute of Amateur Radio, Hyderabad, India, www.niar.org``

I`m not trying S Korea SDR until 1548 when it`s getting nothing from
KSDA on 15615, 15670 or 15680 as sked.

Nor anything from KTWR on 9900, nor after 1600 on 12080. Now that the
storm has passed, to discover whether they can resume normal ops, or
damaged and/or powerless.

Details in this story with a 2+ minute audiovideo:
https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/24/weather/typhoon-mawar-guam-storm-wednesday/index.html

It seems the eye passed just north of Guam, so it could have been
worse for the SW stations and everyone. Are the SW sites in the
southern half of Guam? Seemingly for KSDA which FCC puts at 13-20 N,
while Guam in general is at 13-26 N according to a web search showing
extreme decimal detail without specifying exactly what part of Guam
that be.

The Northern Mariana Islands were also in the typhoon area so USAGM
transmitters on SAIPAN and TINIAN need to be checked out. Their
extensive skeds mixed in with all the other USAGM sites:
http://hfcc.org/data/schedbybrc.php?seas=A23&broadc=AGM

My first check of those is at 2030 May 24, when only two are
scheduled, in Chinese, 9535 & 6080. Into S Korea SDR both are
dominated by Firedragon music, CC talk is definitely under 9535 at
S9+60, and I think also 6080 at S7, which are Saipan and Tinian,
respectively. So those two sites remain operational - unless other
sites have been substituted immediately.

At 2320 into S Korea SDR, checking all the NMI frequencies sked until
2330 or 2400: 15555 Saipan Chinese on with CNR1 jamming; 11700 Tinian
Tibetan only; 13715 Saipan Khmer only; 12140 Tinian Khmer not heard
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Mild tropo enhancement around central OK at 0355 UT May
24 leads to BAD signals on `open` RF channels: 14, 20, 21, 22, 31 --
and decoding:

RF 34, as 33-1 PSIP ID only HRTLND ! No call letters. Also:
33-2, RTV
33-4, Action
33-5, Family
33-6, Revival

Heartland logo is a red heart with outline of a cowboy hat inside it.
Where could that be? Usually with a little tropo I get Tulsa on RF34,
KMYT-TV.

Not very DX, but it`s low power, never before seen from OKC, about 75
km away, KWRW-LD. This is confusing since OKC already has full-power
KOCB on RF33, virtual 34. Found this recent press about it:

``Oklahoma City is Getting a New Free Over The Air TV Station - By
Luke Bouma on April 27, 2023 in All News

Today Digital Networks, LLC announced that it is launching KWRW-LD
channel 33 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Now locals will be able to
watch The Heartland Network, Retro TV, The Family Channel, Rev’n, and
The Action Channel.

“Our goal was to always have an owned and operated station not just in
Tulsa, but Oklahoma City as well,” says Joel Wertman, President of
Digital Networks, LLC and parent company Get After It Media. “We have
no doubt our viewership in Oklahoma City will be strong, as we know
viewers will love our variety of networks and programming.”

Chief Engineer of Digital Networks, LLC Tim Hurley adds, “It’s
exciting to see all of the planning come to fruition, as well as to
know there is a lot more on the horizon this year for launches.”

Here is a quick breakdown of each channel:

The Heartland Network presents the broadest variety of true country
music and lifestyle entertainment. From classic country out of the
vaults of Music Row to the up-and-coming artists of today, The
Heartland Network truly is The Heart of Country®. Programming includes
Music City Tonight, CountryLine TV, Bluegrass Ridge, Country Fix,
classic movies, and original program The Unseen World. The network
also carries special event coverage through in-house produced series
More Than the Music and Heartland Backstage.

Retro TV is the first and one of the longest-running digital broadcast
networks in the country, highlighting classic series and movies from
way back when. Programming includes shows such as Doctor Who, Naked
City, The Saint, Danger Man, One Step Beyond, and The Ray Bradbury
Theater, as well as 1980’s pop culture hits 21 Jump Street, starring
Johnny Depp and the critically acclaimed crime drama Wiseguy with Ken
Wahl and Jonathan Banks. The network’s original program Dracula’s Kung
Fu Theatre is a favorite among viewers, with two seasons now under the
show’s belt. Retro TV is also the exclusive home to the iconic and
groundbreaking daytime soap opera The Doctors which originally ran on
NBC from 1963 – 1982.

Rev’n is a car and motor enthusiast’s dream, with shows designed
around all things that rev. Whether you have a passion for cars,
trucks, boats, airplanes, or motorcycles, viewers will find the speed
they need in series like My Classic Car, Sam’s Garage, The Curator’s
Vault, Motorhead Garage, Legendary Motorcar, and Flying Through Time,
this network keeps the motor running.

The Action Channel is for daredevils and adventure seekers alike with
extreme racing on Boundless, to strength you can’t even fathom on
Strongman Champions League, head-to-head battles on OVW Wrestling,
wild and heart-pounding situations on Operation Repo, the ever-popular
EFC Premium Fights, and more.

The Family Channel provides programming for everyone in the family.
Viewers can relax and meal plan with cooking shows like Positively
Paula with Paula Deen and Bama-Q or pick out their next family
vacation destination with travel shows like Chasing Down Madison Brown
and Road Trip Masters. Get DIY-friendly tips from Ready, Set,
Renovate, or settle down as a family for educational programming like
Underwater Safari and Pet Friends, and more! ``

Heartland is in many but not all markets:

almost all -LD, -CD, or translator-D stations beyond the top 5
markets.

Not to be confused with heartlandtv.com -- a different thing with only
two stations in St Joseph MO and Utica NY? HQ in Georgia per a map.

** SPAIN. 17855, Wed May 24 at 2200, token English from SNR includes
after the news: shortage of Spanish teachers in Scotland where there
is more demand than for French; 2211, interview with J K Franco,
mystery author about crime and revenge: he writes in English or
Spanish and his wife translates into the other. 2224 Report from
Lebanon by correspondent in Beirut whose name I never catch: about
woman driven from public beach for wearing one-piece bathing suit [is
that worse than two-piece??]. VG direct but the other two or three
frequencies are unusable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, May 24 at 2200 and 2226 chex, NO signal from VOT
English direct. Still no signal at 2239 into UTwente. It was also
absent yesterday May 23, but poorly heard on May 22. Something`s
always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
