Radio Beacon YY0ELZ has been newly noted on a number of common beacon frequencies in WSPR mode. YY0 is the ITU designated prefix for Aves Island which is a Venezuelan possession in the Caribbean and is an outpost for the Venezuelan military. It is an extremely small island, a bird sanctuary, sometimes under water, mostly known as a separate DXCC country. It is accessible only via the Venezuelan military. Does this have any cuurent military significance, as Aves is only 163 miles from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands? Aves closest neighbor is Montserrat which is 115 miles away. There is a lot going on between the USA and Venezuela at the moment. I have not heard this beacon, nor can I confirm it is on Aves. Bill Smith, Douglas, MA.
