** CANADA. 346 MCW kHz, Jan 28 at 0725 UT, dash and YXL, 500-watt NDB at Sioux Lookout ON, had not been audible for several nights with northerly propagation suppressed. It`s my #1 Canadian, but now two slightly weakers are also JBA:
351 MCW kHz, Jan 28 at 0727 UT, dash and YKQ, 500 watts at Waskaganish, the only QC I sometimes get, and: 382 MCW kHz, Jan 28 at 0729 UT, dash and YPL, 1000 watts at Pickle Lake ON (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CANADA [and non]. 1190, Jan 28 at 0733 UT, ``AM 1190`` non-ID and weather, lo -21 and hi -14. Wow, really deepfreeze, must be northerly. NRC AM Log shows only station on 1190 deliberately IDing that way is CFSL, Weyburn SK, U2 10/5 kW. Temps are not as bad as if they were F instead of C, and closely match forecast for Weyburn. Supposedly nothing but northward at night, don`t you believe it. I was checking 1190 for anything in Spanish as ``La Ley`` which someone asked me to ID, nonesuch listed in US or Mexico (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CHINA [non]. See MALI ** CUBA. 6000, Jan 28 at 0237, S9+40 of dead air in English? from RHC where something`s always wrong (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA [and non]. 9700, Jan 28 at 0231, S7/S9 sounds JBM, in Spanish. What`s really happening, I think: RHC with dead air, atop much weaker CRI in Spanish making a SAH, as scheduled via Kashgar, East Turkistan at 00-03, and seems // 9590, Commies vs Commies! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CUBA. 11760, Jan 28 at 1939, RHC in Kriyol, S8/S9 undermodulated, also 15140 S9 vs windhowl. SAWA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** MALI. 13630, Jan 28 at 2125, discussion in American English, so must be CRI relay, S3 direct. Stops at 2130 interrupting discussion and after a brief pause resumes with CRI IS and opening French. This is deliberate, not a mistake. All English broadcasts last an hour and start at top of hour, but gotta get French on when it start. HFCC shows continuous 1930-2230 for CIRAF 53, 100 kW at 111 degrees; first semihour in Portuguese, last hour in French (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 5140 USB, Wed Jan 28 at *1500, another weekly Oklahoma Security Net, opened by YL WSHM692, counting 12345, 54321. Her signal and others quite weak, and altho calls uttered fonetikaly, not sure I have copied all accurately. Compare to last weeks Jan 21 & 14 and previous log reports. After above call, she mentions once one other, personal? Like KMYU4JS?? Rollcall: WQYW443 Beckham County; WQZT582 Broken Arrow, answered; WQSY836 where? Byng per Don Moore; WNPV700 Durant, answered; WQYW883 Moore, answered JBA; WNUW215 Ponca City; KNGR728 Pontotoc County; Don Moore had this in Rush Springs, different non-adjacent county; WPFY721 Seminole, Ernie answers to Brendah?; WNBM839 Stillwater, answered; WNCH624 Tulsa; WNBE830 Jefferson City MO, answered. Completed at 1507 till next week; any others? At 1508, WPFY721 contacts WNBE830. This was all totally routine, despite seeming `emergency` ice/storm conditions. Only today with temp to exceed freezing might we venture out, but decide streets are still too hazardous. Enid got 11.5 inches of snow, plus/minus depending on source, but not freezing rain and never any power outages for us (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR) ** SPAIN. 12030, Wed Jan 28 at 2302, REE dead air at S7/9+10 into Maryland SDR, the ME channel still defective, no one noticing at Noblejas??? Fortunately, we don`t need it as the 9690 for N America is funxional for weekly token English, S9+5/20. 17715 is JBA, 17755 JJBBA. I listen to the first third, when the guy is mainly speaking with his heavy accent: at least we cannot doubt we are listening to Spain. Some of his misprons: ``colleeded, creesis, launch`ed, fattal shooting``. Annoying continuous musical background, and too many long Spanish clips during the `English` news. If we understand that, we don`t need the English, and if we don`t understand it, we don`t need the Spanish! After domestic and international news, 2320 about cinema and TV awards (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 5960.002+, Jan 28 at 2257, VOT not off the air IS & ID in English, S9+25/35 into UTwente. Ron Trotto refers us to `Ask WWCR` on website for more info about the situation; my notes: It`s the second broadcast in January, till further notice due to the weather. Four of us are here presently; two stayed overnight. This is #604, with Brady Murray and Zach. Recorded Saturday 24th when there are already several inches of snow, with more snow, sleet, freezing rain expected for 24 hours more. Giant storm across the US. More ice, rain expected. Reggie and Greg are also in. Don`t want to drive anywhere. Below freezing for a week or two, not going to thaw. Concern is ice, bringing down trees, powerlines, extended period without electricity. At least getting this broadcast done and on website. Transmitters are water-cooled, so without electricity the cooling water stops, freezes, damaging transmitters [if on the air]. Plan to keep everything in good shape as long as we can, with generator, heaters outside. May run out of supplies. If delay returning to air, it`s due to weather or could be due to repairs taking place. Snow is not nearly as bad as ice. Doesn`y take a lot of ice to damage phone lines, which are a lot like the struxure of our antennas [rhombix]. Already even today at 10 am had a transmitter go down, making horrible noise. Main blower had somehow moved. Engineer Phil has never seen that happen before, two belts torn up. Phil got it repaired in 45 minutes. Not clear if weather caused, not very cold inside that building. You and Reggie did a fair amount of work today, clearing road. Not expecting anyone, but a broadcaster did come in to record. Two big trux were about to collide, then came back. Video footage shows almost nobody driving, just some tractor-trailers, or with plows on front. Focusing on main roads. In 24 hours expecting final burst of snow, then bitter cold. As much as 20+ inches of snow predicted. Putting this out to let folx know, if website still up, long duration storm. At 11:38 into show, one other topic: Chris got a call saying that 7 MHz frequencies were not performing as usual, but 7490 mornings was heard in China close to Mongolia, QSLed, SINPO 43444, incredible. 7490 starts about sunrise. Really excited to hear from China. Will sleep on couch or whatever we have to do.
