13 February is World Radio DayÂâ a day to celebrate radio as a medium; to improve international cooperation between broadcasters; and to encourage major networks andÂcommunity radioÂalike to promote access to information, and free, independent and pluralistic media.

UNESCO and all the stakeholders: public services, mainstream and community media areÂpreparing to celebrate the fourth edition of World Radio Day, to be held on February 13, 2015.ÂThe theme for this fourth edition is âYouth and Radioâ. It represents an important opportunity to evaluate the contribution of young people in the radio sector with the goal of increasing their participation along three levels:

1.ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Youth-targeted programming
2.ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Programmes including young people at the production level
3.ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Finally and most importantly, programming devised and produced by young people

The organisers have proposed someÂsubthemes that are designed to offer aÂwide array of opportunities for discussionÂand to lend themselves toÂinteresting and informative programming:

1.ÂÂÂÂÂÂ The elimination ofÂstereotypes and prejudiceÂin the portrayal of young people in the media.
2.ÂÂÂÂÂÂ Improving theÂsecurity of young journalists, especially freelancers and fixers in conflict and disaster zones.
3.ÂÂÂÂÂÂ TheÂimpact of young peopleÂon community radio (education, acculturation, coverage of conflicts not being covered by the wider media, emergency and humanitarian crises, etc).
4.ÂÂÂÂÂÂ The link between theÂaccessibility of informationÂthrough radio amongst young people and the sustainable development of communities.
