Glenn Hauser logs July 18, 22-23, 2022 |

Saturday, July 23 2022
** CANADA [and non]. July 23 at 0021-0026 UT I had two Calgary FM stations in a huge almost 3-hour sporadic E opening mainly from Montana and NW states: 92.9, CFEX-FM a.k.a. X92.9; 92.1, CJAY-FM a.k.a. CJ-92; and something in French on 93.5, the closest being CBKF-FM-3 in Zenon Park, Sask. These will be reported in full once the whole report has been researched and compiled (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. Correxion: these were on July 18, not 17, entirely fixed: 96.7 FM, July 18 at 1646 UT, lexure in Spanish during big mixed sporadic E and tropo openings; 1658 song with refrain ``Guajira``. 1659, ``Rebelde, La Habana, Emisora de la Revolución, 1700 ``Noticiero Nacional de Radio``. 1711 still in with Cuban mentions, national weather summary, 1713 ``NN de R`` program ID again, ``en AM, FM y Onda Corta``. Cuban FM DX is rare here, mostly too far for single-hop sporadic E, but Habana is possible at 2095 km = 1302 miles, and westward. WTFDA FM Database has three Rebeldes on 96.7, Bayamo and Moa too far, but this must be: CMBA-FM 96.7 CD. HABANA CH NEWS/TALK/VARIETY RADIO REBELDE 1.0 kWH 0.0 kWV 100.0 m HAAT 23-07-16 82-18-54 REBELDE Tx site Loma de la Cruz/Regla There are three other non-Rebelde 96.7s, one further west, R Mantua, but presumably would not be RR relayers at midday. Only 1 kW horizontal only, not very impressive for a flagship!? Meanwhile I am hunting for other Cubans! Only one possibility: 99.1, July 18 at 1703, some CCI in Spanish. Besides two low-power translators, this is the only full-power, and same site as 96.7: CMBF-FM 99.1 CD. HABANA CH CLASSICAL/OPERA/ARTS RADIO MUSICAL NACIONAL 8.0 kWH only 100.0 m 23-07-16 82-18-54 RADIO TAINO Tx site Loma de la Cruz/Regla --- R. Taíno is in the ``PS Info`` column, not sure what that mean in practice (Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF RADIO 2148) ** EGYPT. 9439.995, July 22 at 2152, NO signal of R. Cairo English into UTwente (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** HAWAII. 8764-USB, July 22 at 0623, robotic marine weather citing geo coordinates in the Pacific, S9 peaks but rough modulation. USCG broadcasts are typically poorly modulated, something which any ham would not put up with from his own station. EiBi shows NMO, USCG Honolulu at 0600-0635. Its other times: 0005-0040, 1200-1235, 1800-1835; while frequency is timeshared with many more broadcasts from USCG NMN Chesapeake VA and NMC Point Reyes CA. XSR Haikou Radio could also be there 24h in Mandarin, and XSU Yantai Radio at 07-21, unheard now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** SPAIN. 17855, Friday July 22 at 2200, REE timesignal, and --- NO token English without explanation, instead something in Castilian about Canciones Ténebres; usual good signal anyway into Maryland SDR. English supposed to be M/W/F 2200-2230; maybe they ran out of rerun material? Google translate insists that Tenebres is Catalan; but further research implies originally French denoting darkness (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 9830+, July 22 at 2200, VOT succeeds transmitting the English almost-hour, S9+25/35 into UTwente, BUT with constant squealing, characteristic I guess of one particular transmitter or feedline, as happens occasionally. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler. Opening news emphasizes the Ukra/Rusky agreement about grain shipments reached in Türkiye. Also, new frequency, 9830.017 ex-9830.021 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** UKRAINE [non]. 7730, July 23 at 0500-0507, UR1 via WRMI, `Ukraine: Security Issue` including Russia has lost 39,000 troops; 5000 reports of children forcibly deported; Russia still stealing grain from farmers; ports blockaded, but agreement to allow some exports reached in Turkey. Good as usual via Maryland SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2148 monitoring: confirmed first broadcasts, UT Friday July 22 at 0130 on WRMIs: 5850, S9+20/30; 7730, S9/+10 direct, both noisy. Also confirmed UT Friday July 22 at 0330 on WRMI 7780, S8/S9 direct. Also confirmed Friday July 22 at 1430 on WRMI 9955, S9/S6 direct, trace of jamming. Next: Also confirmed Friday July 22 at 1815.8 on IRRS SW via Bulgaria, 7290, S7/S8 into UTwente and also on AM Italia, 1323 & 918 kHz about the same into Noale SDR, but not 207 kHz; to completion almost 1845; then fill music, 1849 UN News interview about a musician who had an accident in Sardinia. 1857* 7290 chopped off already while 1323 & 918 continue with music. Also tuned in earlier: 1323 & 918 at 1758 ``welcome to Country Jamboree`` for the week of July 17, just in time to be chopped off at 1800 for IRRS `SW` ID and FSN; while as always, 7290 did not chop on until 1800.8, JIP FSN including Spotlite segment at 1803, 1805 IRRS ID with Milano PO Box otherwise denied, music. 1813 bird calls and open TUC Radio, about effects of climate change on marine life, just in time to be chopped off at 1815 for another long IRRS SW ID and then WOR. Also confirmed Fri July 22 at 2030.3 on AM Italia 918 & 1323, following IRRS SW ID claiming that it`s on reduced carrier USB, which it is not; besides not even being on SW air ever at this hour. Tuned in at 2028 to a show of music from Ulster, before it`s chopped short. 1323 has ACI seemingly Romania on both sides 1314 & 1332, and now fast SAH and CCI which could also be Romania. Also confirmed UT Saturday July 23 after 0130 on WRMI 9395, JBA on caradio amid a huge FM DX opening from the NW. Also confirmed UT Saturday July 23 at 0400 on WBCQ Radio Angela, 5129.971, S9/+10 but noisy into Maryland SDR; PEI is offline. Next: 0700 UT Saturday Unique R, Australia 5035-USB or 3210-USB 1930vUT Saturday WA0RCR 1860-AM 0030 UT Sunday WRMI 7780 to SW 0300vUT Sunday WA0RCR 1860-AM [nominal 0315; as late as 0430] 1324vUT Sunday WMRI Europe via Ch 292 Germany 9670 2000 UT Sunday IRRS 1323 & 918? & 207?-Italy 2230 UT Sunday WRMI 5950 to NNW [to be canceled? still July 17] 0030 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to SW 0300vUT Monday WBCQ 6160v Area 51 to WSW 0030 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 2230 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed by Cuba] 2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9395 to NNW 1000 UT Wednesday Unique R, Australia 5035-USB or 3210-USB 1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW 2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW 0030 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW 0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S; 9395 to NNW Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts: http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html For these noncommercial services, voluntary financial support is much appreciated; via PayPal not necessarily in US funds, to woradio at yahoo.com Or by postal money order or check in US funds on a US bank to: Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. (7489.9v), UT Sat July 23 at 0000, WBCQ webcast of `AAAWWW`, soon obvious as new since refers to last week`s show about the Webbscope. Once again, Angela is remote on a lo-fi phoneline. But I am called to the car for FM DXing for almost 3 hours. Once again, I request if anyone else listen to this show and hear any significant info about WBCQ, such as new programming, technical matters such as the crashing SuperStition, buying up other SW stations, please report it to the WOR iog or to me (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A. 5129.971, UR Sat July 12 at 0252-0300, managed to catch a few minutes of Greek Music Refuge, new show on WBCQ R. Angela, presented by Bill Tilford, but our longtime DX contributor Zacharias Liangas says he compiled the playlist. In the absence of ERT on SW any more. S9+10 but noisy storm crashes into Maine SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non]. After a few days of tantalizing not-quite sporadic E FM DX paths to OK, UT Sat July 23 at 0000 I see MUFs exceeding 100 MHz to the NW of here on DXMAPs, so head for the hot car in the garage. I`m there for almost 3 hours of continuous DXing, centered on Montana, but also from Alberta, Idaho, Washington, South Dakota at least. Occupying 5 pages in my log notebook, it will take some time to research and compile completely (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) UNIDENTIFIED. 7849.3 LSB, July 22 at 0619, weak 2-way seems Spanish, vs QRM from CHU as I am investigating its vestigial LSB. Never notice it in normal USB or AM tuning (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) This report despatched at 0514 UT July 23

Wednesday, July 20 2022
** ANTARCTICA. 15475.98 RCUSB, it`s a Wednesday, July 20, so time to check for LRA36 which was absent a week ago. Tuned in at 1444 via Argentine SDR, already on with song, S7/S9; shortly YL greeting for the 12th program of the 2022 series `Esperanza Audaz`, a ``día muy especial``; staff names; blows a kiss to all listeners, including via the 50-station RNA network. 1450 temp is 7, winds 51 kph; sunrise at 09:57 local, sunset missed. Multiple-platform contact info. 1500 ``su compañía`` ID, song. After 1500 I`m mainly attentive to Afghanistan documentary on PBS World, about the anti-Soviet Jihad years; but let it run without trying to understand much of the content. 1504, This Week in History starting with 18 July 1918 birth of Nelson Mandela. 1516 song about Esperanza; 1519 chat; 1522 contact info again; 1527 long lofi telco interview. At 1533 I see that all four RXs at this remote are on it, besides me, Gary Pence, `San Antonio` but really Dallas; and someones in Florence, Italy and Dayton, Oregon. 1550 song. 1554 greeting with reverb, seems sent by a listener. 1601 song, talk, 1613 ID, song; 1629 still chat, 1641 song, 1643 ID with staff names and off at 1644*. So I had it for exactly two hours.
Gary Pence reports at 1510: ``LRA 36: Hi Glenn, I got on just before you to already hear LRA36 song in progress at 1440z, I just don't know when they started. I wasn't able to use KFS SE [antenna] this morning so I switched over to KPH Point Reyes omni antenna just to hear a trace.`` And at 1615: ``LRA 36 stuff --- Glenn, I finally got a seat at KFS SE SDR and was very underwhelmed at the lack of signal; it was just traces, nothing sustainable. Sounds like they have pretty serious power regulation issues going on there. Remember in the movie Apollo 13 where the portable cassette deck with very low batteries was tumbling in that cold capsule? That's just how their audio sounds...`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** BRAZIL. 4985+, July 20 at 0640, R. Brasil Central is JBA not just JBA carrier, slightly plus and without 2-receiver matching, seems // same music and talk on 11815++ which is a bit further off-frequency, but tolerable (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CANADA [and non]. Immediately after compiling my July 18 FMDX report on July 19, DXMAPS show the MUF finally into FM band to here as it`s transitioning into UT July 20, so out to the garaged car thru the heat dropping slightly around 100. Standard provisos as introducing previous reports. 96.7 at 2359, hard rock, a couple dropouts to dead air for a few seconds; ``The Rock Station, KLT`` VG but fades out by 2400. Searching 96.7 Slogan field on KLT gets no hits since DB has it as KL:T with a :colon: spurious punxuation? It is: WRGZ 96.7 ROGERS CITY MI CLASSIC ROCK KL:T THE ROCK STATION 42.0 kW 162.0 m WKLT 97.5 & WBCM 93.5 & WGRZ 96.7 Rock //WKLT 97.5 & WBCM 93.5 --- I had heard 97.5 & 93.5 ones July 2. WRGZ: 1537 km = 935 mi Now it`s UT July 20: 95.3 at 0003, hard rock overrides KOKC translator, gone before any ID 94.3 at 0005, outro NPR News, CCI KS, ``Inspired`` program. Strong fade-ins. A bit of ``Kix on Route 66`` song and talking about the PBS show `Great Muslim-American Road Trip`, another episode of which is coming up tonight and I am watching it as I write after 0200. WTFDA FM DB Search funxion does not apply to all fields, just 10 major ones, not including Mode or Remarks. Otherwise one must display an entire frequency file on one page - pick 500 to be sufficient. Searching entire 94.3 USA file on NPR gets WCMV and 2 other hits: WZAI Brewster MA; and K232AM, China Lake CA translator of Nevada PR and presumably National PR. We can rule those out! Also the MODE column where HD sometimes appears even more rarely is labeled mono (but $ tereo must be understood, u.o.s.). Such is the case with WZAI. A drawback of this DB is that there is no column/field for NETWORK! I still would like to know for sure all the NPR affils on 94.3. Of course, these days, many stations, commercial or not, are affiliated with more than one, even multiple nets. E.g. an NPR is probably, but not necessarily, also getting shows from APR and PRX. At the main website https://www.npr.org/ there is no obvious link to a simple list of stations and frequencies! But the first thing they want to set up is *your* NPR station after which nothing else matters, driving financial support thataway. However a broader search leads to this roster by state and city, https://legacy.npr.org/stations/pdf/nprstations.pdf but why ``legacy``? Implying it is historical rather than up to date?? Aha, abottom it`s dated JUNE 2013! BTW I do not see a single translator-style call! Tho surely there be many. The 94.9 KOSU relay in Ponca City doesn`t make this list! There I can anyway search on 94.3 and get only 2 hits: of course, non-comms 92+ are a rarity and thus should be outstanding. Per this we have: WBTN-FM Bennington VT, and WZAI-FM Brewster MA - but no station in Leland MI! Another oddity is that every single callsign is suffixed -FM, which is not always the case. Except for the few AMs, where there should NOT ever be any -AM suffix. How about this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NPR_stations Hopefully uptodate, but admittedly incomplete: ``List of NPR stations From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia --- The following is a list of full-power non-commercial educational radio stations in the United States broadcasting programming from National Public Radio (NPR), which can be sorted by their call signs, frequencies, band, city of license and state. HD Radio subchannels and low-power translators are not included. `` BTW, Wikipedia also linx to the 2013 NPR page, so I guess there is nothing more recent from NPR itself. I do not see any way to sort by frequency, but can search the whole page on 94.3, which gets us 4: KBYI Rexburg ID -- o yeah, I DXed that one recently WZAI Brewster MA WCMV-FM Leland MI! WBTN-FM Bennington VT Anyhow, only MI is in today`s PTA: WCMV-FM 94.3 LELAND MI NEWS/CLASSICAL CMU PUBLIC RADIO 20.5 kW 233.0 m NPR --- 1399 km = 869 mi WCMV would be relaying WCMU. Own website can`t locate own program sked! But it does find this show at the time I heard it, 8 pm [EDT] Tuesday, claiming to be only PR show exclusively about religion: https://radio.wcmu.org/show/inspired I had never run across it on any other station. 93.5 at 0012, CCI with Kansas, ad for an adventure park, urbanairsudbury.com Website really leads to: https://www.urbanair.com/ontario-sudbury/ so it`s certainly: CIGM-FM 93.5 SUDBURY ON CAN CONTEMPORARY HIT RADIO HOT 93.5 100.0 kWH 43.0 kWV 150.0 m horiz only THE NEW HOT 93.5 FM Top 40 --- 1794 km = 1115 mi 95.1 at 0014, French Canadian conversation overrides KS/OK stations, 0018-0020 VG peak, then fadeout; certainly this near Sudbury PTA: CBON-FM-17 relays:CBON-FM 98.1 95.1 NORTH BAY ON CAN French NEWS/TALK ICI RADIO-CANADA PREMIERE 100.0 kW 145.0 m horiz only --- There are four others, all in far Québec and N-B, low power except for CBF-FM itself in Montréal. 1884 km = 1171 mi 93.9 at 0023, some rock music DX tries to overcome dead air from presumed KIMY but can`t make it. Of course I cannot manipulate antenna 93.1 at 0025, ``93 K-Rock``. No hits unless you ditch the hyphen for a space; there it is again as in two previous openings this summer. This and other stations are rather lax about whether to include the number after the decimal in slogan IDs: WIMK 93.1 IRON MOUNTAIN MI ROCK 93.1 K ROCK 100.0 kW 180.0 m --- 1331 km = 827 mi 96.7 at 0030, praise rock, soon CCI from another rock, both fade 0031; hard rock in & out again at 0033, as I quit. 94.5 at 0058, another quick check in toohotcar, some rock here may be skip. After that MUF falls (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. 1520 kHz, July 20 at 1704 UT, KOKC is OFF! In FMDX bandscan across 95.3 I check for // to the translator, but nothing on 1520. This may mean that refurbishing their 50 kW direxional license is finally underway. If off tonight maybe a DX opportunity; but back on at 1858 check (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. 92.3, July 20 at 1706 UT, Dan Bongino show is restarting on usual fringe signal, so now sure it`s KMZE Woodward, altho neither station nor show will confirm such a hookup.
