Logs
** BOTSWANA. 17895, Jan 11 at 1723, VOA English, S5-S7, relay at
1700-1800, 100 kW at 350 degrees. Somewhat better than only other sigs
on band, BBC 17830 Ascension, 17780 Woofferton.

VOA site sometimes referred to as Selebi-Phikwe, othertimes as Moepeng
Hill. WRTH uses both, but where is this, really? East central
Botswana, near the Zimbabwe border; close to which city? 100 km SSE of
Francistown, which used to be a radio site. It`s the second-largest
city, 100K after capital Gaborone. Apparently has not been
de-Anglicized in nomenclature. Wikipedia: ``The present town was
founded in 1897 as a settlement near the Monarch mine and named after
Daniel Francis, an English prospector from Liverpool who acquired
prospecting licences in the region in 1869.``

Selebi-Phikwe is half the size of F-town, and known for nickel mining.
Moepeng Hill is known as MW transmitter site, both for VOA 600 kW on
909 along with the SW; and R. Botswana, 100 kW on 621 kHz. M.H.
appears to be a hill rather than a populated place, about 25 km west
of S.P., so closer to due south from Francistown. A medium-sized
African country, Botswana is 85.79% the area of Texas, but sparsely
populated (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 9700, Jan 11 at 0701, S9/8 of dead air in English, the only
RHC frequency still on. and it`s useless. Something`s always wrong at
RHC. Time for The Other Side, anyway:

``READ TODAY THE CUBA OF TOMORROW --- January 11, 2022 OPINION
Díaz-Canel seeks to dupe Cubans by citing 'demographic dynamics'
Raulist neo-Castroism stands out for 'solving' non-existent problems
to avoid facing real ones. --- RAFAELA CRUZ | La Habana``
https://diariodecuba.com/cuba/1641829821_36694.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9899.6, Jan 11 at 2144 & 2208 chex at UTwente, NO signal
from R. Cairo in English; gave up or working on it? (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** MALI. 13645, Jan 11 at 1728, one of best signals on band, S9-S7 in
talk with drumming, CRI or rather CGTN Radio in Swahili via Bamako II,
which is 100 kW at 111 degrees aimed right at Dar es Salaam. So why is
it so good over here, not directly offback 291 degrees, but hits
Habana barely missing USA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 1640, Jan 11 at 0729 UT, KZLS Enid, having ``lent`` its
branding to co-owned 96.9 KQOB, now disposes of its own true identity,
IDing as ``The Eagle 96-9`` and ``only talk station with 100,000
watts``. Well, that certainly beats the KOKC translator on 95.3, and
the KTLR on 103.7, but really, in the OKC market? Well, yes, per:
https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/locate?select=city&city=oklahoma+city&x=0&y=0
if you discount public radio semi-`talk` station KOSU 91.7. That`s far
too intelligent for The Eagle demographic, which targets the spectrum
from `Red Eye Radio` to `Alex Jones`. Hey, why doesn`t talker KTOK
1000 have at least an FM translator-wagger? Get with it (Glenn Hauser,
Enid, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2120 monitoring: confirmed Tuesday January 11
at 2338 the 2330 on WRMI 9955, S9/S7 direct, no jamming audible.
Next:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

One may also contribute by MO or check on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. (7490.1v), UT Tue Jan 11 at 0030, after hearing the secret
semi-repeat of `UBMP` on WBCQ webcast, `Camp Constitution Radio`
starts with theme notes, then prolog-commercial, this time something
about Quitting -- I don`t get it, and almost sounds like a parody. If
real, may pay for the `CCR` airtime (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1200 kHz, Jan 11 at 0727 UT, gospel huxterism overriding
WOAI, where at less than 500 miles away, we ought to be within its
prime ``clear channel`` 50 kW ND coverage area --- Plugs
calvarysearch.com and program title seems `The Verdict`, non-IDs for
``Faith 1200``, i.e. KFNW West Fargo ND, still far out-of-whack, not
protecting WOAI. Makes SAH of about 5 Hz, counting the ``fades`` as
the seconds on my watch tick by (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. More replies on the UDXF iog thread about the 6114 RTTY,
January 7 into 8:

``No way was it 850 shift yesterday evening, although the speed may
have been 75. It was a 200 Hz shift FSK synchronous (encrypted) signal
which MultiPSK was giving out at around 50 Bauds. 73 de JimD
(MPJ)``

``It's on 6114 CF at the moment using 850 Hz shift -- Martin - South
West UK`` [no time displayed]

``Antonio I56578 Jan 7 #102673 --- Hard to state the speed, poor
SNR.``

``Leon Koning Jan 7 #102680 --- Hi, if it is 850/75/enc then it’s not
new, i catched it in Q3 last year. Don’t know where t’s from but it
looks like US Navy. Someone has to confirm this but this TX is
proberbly // with 5454.50 (cf) r/Leon``

``Mike Chace-Ortiz Jan 7 #102683 --- See my earlier posts on this
thread, Leon, It’s from the Azores. —mco``

``You were right Mike. Apologies. It's now much stronger here and is
showing 882 Hz shift while MultiPSK is giving out silly speeds, but it
is indeed 75 Bauds by ear. 73 de JimD (MPJ)``

``Antonio I56578 Jan 8 #102704 --- for what concerns the speed, it's
75 bps on-air but the actual bps rate is 50 bps (1 bit out-of 3 is
repeated) ciao Antonio`` [with graphic] (via Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs January 9-10-11, 2022  View Printable Version
Tuesday, January 11 2022

Logs
** CUBA. 12000, Jan 10 at 0702, RHC English is S1 JBA on 2 x 6000, //
9700 much stronger; at 0712, 6100 is still on but S7-S9 of humbuzz
only. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 5960, Jan 10 at 2337, JBA carrier only direct:
must be EAST TURKISTAN, rather than AWOL VOT English: yes, since at
2346 recheck, undermodulated music at S9+10/20 from Turkey on late or
intermittently. One more check, this time via remote in Maryland, at
2354: S5-S6, and the TRT interval signal is playing --- backwards!!!!
I had just started to record it when cut off air at 2356*. Could they
be playing it off a reel-to-reel tape? Cassettes won`t play backwards.
I suppose some software could do it, deliberately, or by accident?
First time I have heard any backwards music in many years; thanks,
VOT, where something`s always awry at Ankara, and/or erroneous at
Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2120 monitoring: confirmed Sunday
January 9 from 2100.5 on AM Italia, 918 kHz, S9+20 into nearby Noale
SDR; from 2058 music, 2059 dead air, no ID but Madrid timesignal
audible, before joining WOR after theme has started. Checking LW 207
kHz via same SDR, trace of algo, imagination level maybe me talking.

NOT confirmed Sunday January 9 at 2330 on WRMI 9955, replaced by
something else as now shown on program sked. But still at same time on
WRMI 5950, S9+35 into Knoxville SDR. This leaves WOR with only two
times on 9955 when there are also webcasts and phonecasts: Fri 1530 &
Tue 2330.

Confirmed UT Monday January 10 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG direct
S9+20/30.

Also confirmed UT Monday January 10 at 0130 on WRMI 9395, S9/+10.
System G program sked continues to show this also on 9455 and also
same time UT Thursday, but for weeks/months, 9455 has really split to
System J = SMTV at 0100!

Also confirmed UT Mon Jan 10 at 0230 on WRN North America webcast.

Also confirmed UT Mon Jan 10 from almost 0401 on Area 51 via WBCQ
6160-, but JBA into Missouri SDR, offset -58 Hz = 6159.942, S6/S7 vs
storm crashes along the Gulf coast. 0428 at Knoxville it`s S3-S6 on
6159.968. All those Kiwis need to be calibrated. Next:

2330 UT Tuesday WRMI 9955 to SSE [jammed?]
1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2200 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

One may also contribute by MO or check on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, PO Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5970, Jan 10 at 1548, surprised to hear Spanish here at S9,
WEWN on much later than expected and // 12050 at S9+10. 1558 recheck,
5970 is off. Normally only one or the other, but Glen Tapley admitted
to me that two different transmitters are used for lower and higher
frequencies. B21 HFCC shows 5970 at 00-14, 12050 at 14-24 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5920, Jan 9 at 2339, Jan 10 at 0007, NO signal from WHRI.
Nor Jan 11 at 0018 check via Maryland remote. Giampiero Bernardini,
Milano, Italy, had reported it, via SW Bulletin: ``5920 Dec31 0005
WHRI, Cypress Creek SC USA, English religious, fair (Bernardini)``

WHRI has been inactive! Pending sale to anyone but WBCQ, Did he get an
ID? It is however registered in HFCC available B21 all the way from 23
to 12 UT, A21 00-12, and no other station currently at 0005. Possibly
it was turned on once for some test. Or could the frequency be
misremembered? Like 7520 has WWCR on it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VATICAN. 13830, Jan 10 at 1551, VR in Amharic, S9/+10, with
long/short path echo. This is 250 kW at 135 degrees. Exacerbated by
SMG capability of radiating considerable signal directly off the back
of antenna, which would be 315 degrees, USward. Strangely enough,
distancefromto.net does have Santa Maria di Galeria in its database,
computing distance direct to Enid as 8786.29 km = 5459.55 statute
miles.

Rounding off a bit, taking Earth circumference as 40,075 km, the
longpath = 31289 km, which is 22503 km further than shortpath. Taking
speed of light at 299,792 km/sec, that makes a delay of 0.075 second
or approx. 1/13 of one second echo. That is, assuming propagation at
ground level, so everything slightly further bouncing up and down from
the ionosphere. How many hops, I wonder?

11935, Jan 10 at 1557, I also hear the other VR Amharic, just in time
with IS and cut off at 1558*; no echo noted. This one is 250 kW at 113
degrees from SMG (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6114, re my RTTY reports vs carrier on 6115, Jan 9 at
0502, Ron Howard replies: ``Hi Glenn, On Jan 9, tuned by 6115 a number
of times (0500+ UT). Heard the RTTY there about 50% of the time, so
rather erratic. As for Congo, in the past I often noted them starting
about *0525, but rarely much earlier. Recently have only been hearing
Japan and RTTY. Ron, California``

Lou Johnson says, Jan 10 at 1339 UT, ``6115 Clear last night (1/9),
here in Atlanta. Maybe they figured it out? Lou`` --- maybe he means
UT Jan 10. Comment also copied to WWCR and VORW, since 6115 QRM would
concern them if between 22 and 02 UT. No RTTY detectable here Jan 10
circa 2340 when WWCR is blasting in on 6115 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
