From now and for an unknown time, at least for 3years, I will not use any radio except the remote SDRs for DXing. Recently wemoved from the village back to the city in a space that prohibits the use ofdesktop DXing, a place flooded by high levels of noise in the LMHF bands. Theradio is now used mostly for FM, for news listening.we run politically livelycondition with always very interesting twits every day .. Glenn Hauser logs September 1-2, 2025 |
|
Tuesday, September 02 2025
** CUBA. 11760, Sept 1 at 2213, RHC with undermodulated music and squeal, S9+30, but no signals on 13780 or 15230. Somethings always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 15230, Sept 2 at 1454, RHC Spanish S5/S6, undermodulated and not too distorted; nothing on 13780 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** CHILE. 28475 USB, Sept 1 at 2202, ``Aloha`` in Spanish, tail of KH6 contact? Then it`s CE4J#O with CQ in English, contacting WA4AV. DXheat/cluster fills in the missing letter: CE4JZO with WA4AV at 2205 on this very frequency. QRZ.com: ``CE4JZO Chile flag Chile, Federico Edo. "Kiko" Concha Traverso-, Avda. La Estancia N° 413, Comuna Machali, Sexta Región, Rancagua- 2910000, Chile``. Only one other phone signal on 10m, 28435 USB unID, and no beacons, but got a Guat on 12, q.v. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** GUATEMALA. 24985 USB, Sept 1 at 2207, TG9AHM calling CQ in English, OSOB. QRZ.com: ``TG9AHM Guatemala flag Guatemala, EMMANUEL H. MIERES G. (Manny), 19 CALLE 10-38 ZONA 11 COL. MARISCAL, BOSQUES DE MARISCAL, CIUDAD DE GUATEMALA 01011, Guatemala`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** MALI. 11975, Sept 1 at 2215, French with flutter and rumble, S9+10/20. It`s CRI relay at 2130-2230 for N Africa (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA [and non]. Re Skyview tones QRMing 780 WBBM: ``Hi Glenn - Ran this thru ChatGPT, to see what AI thought about it. Ron ``What you describe is very intriguing DX-wise. Let’s break it down: Your log: Date/time: Sept 1, 0640 UT Frequency: 780 kHz Station normally there: WBBM Chicago (dominant on 780 at night) What you heard: Equal-strength QRM, repeating ~70-second loop of Skyview Networks test tones (L/R channels, then both), plus a voice message calling for “internet connection” and giving the Skyview ops center phone number 877-503-8910. Possibilities WBBM technical issue / mixup WBBM is a Skyview client (Skyview distributes CBS/Westwood One content, and handles network ad insertion). If their STL (studio-to-transmitter link) or satellite receiver hiccupped, the Skyview receiver could have defaulted to its test loop, thus being heard on air mixed with program. The “call the operations center” message is meant for engineers when the receiver is out of sync. Another Skyview affiliate bleeding in KSPI Stillwater, OK, is indeed on 780, but it’s a daytimer (500 W). It should have been off the air at 0640 UT (01:40 CDT). If it wasn’t, maybe it was running satellite network feed (via Skyview) unattended overnight. However, with equal strength to WBBM in Oklahoma, that would be unusual—KSPI runs only 250 W at night if authorized (but FCC shows daytimer). Imposter / spur / crossfeed Less likely, but another station in the region could have been airing Skyview’s loop due to automation misconfiguration. If it was truly “equal strength” with WBBM in Oklahoma, that points toward a local/regional source, not just WBBM alone. My take Most likely it was WBBM itself briefly radiating the Skyview test loop due to a network receiver failure. The fact you heard both WBBM and the loop “equal strength” could have been their audio chain mixing the live program with the backup/test channel. KSPI or another Oklahoma station seems less likely at that hour, unless it was mistakenly left on at night running satellite automation. 📌 What you might do: Check KSPI’s official FCC license (it’s indeed daytimer only). If they were on at 01:40 CDT, that would be unauthorized nighttime operation. If this repeats, it’s more probably WBBM itself having an uplink/network receiver issue.`` (via Ron Howard) This is more or less to be expected, except AI does not know that from my previous experience, KSPI daytimer *can* be on overnight, and at nearby groundwave range, will be steady and as strong as WBBM via skywave. KSPI is 250 watts, not 500. It was not very brief, but maybe 5 minutes before I tuned away. No such problem 24 hours later (Glenn Hauser, Enid OK, WOR) ** OKLAHOMA. 930, Sept 1 at 2156, 2218 UT chex, WKY OKC *STILL* in dead air; also Sept 2 at 0625, and **STILL** at 1452, even tho the holiday is over. First noticed Aug 30 at 2340, 63+ hours ago. FINALLY by 1713 UT check Sept 2, WKY has resumed modulating stupid sports talk (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR) ** SPAIN. 17715, S9+20/30 direct and VP 15390, music from REE, 2200 accurate timesignal and RNE program in Spanish, domestic relay? instead of English, which supposedly resumes on Wednesdays only at 2200-2300, first at 1004, when presumably not on SW (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** TURKEY. 11785, Sept 1 at 2157, VOT not off the air, IS & IDs in English, S9+10/20 direct, mostly readable vs noise level; 2201 already in olds (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR) ** U S A [and non].
