Glenn Hauser logs May 25, 2021  View Printable Version

Logs
** CANADA. 28193-CW, May 25 at 2226, along with all the US beacons in
sporadic E opening, VE4ARM/B. Loop starts with 17 E`s, then VVV DE
VE4ARM/B and a lot more probably location and/or grid square. WJ5O:

28.193 VE4ARM C AUSTIN, MB # 5W, GP

The # mark in this listing means ``confirmed as active or heard``, but
what means GP?. QRZ.com has nothing about a beacon, but it`s:

VE4ARM Canada flag Canada, MANITOBA AMATEUR RADIO MUSEUM INC. C/O DAVE
SNYDAL, 25 QUEENS CRESCENT, BRANDON, MB R7B 1G1 Canada.

Austin MB is not near Brandon but allegedly halfway between there and
Winnipeg on the Trans-Canada Hwy; not in my Rand McNally atlas (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA NORTH. 15244.958, May 25 at 1454, JBA carrier off-frequency,
i.e. VOK French as scheduled only. After 1500, however, both it and
CRI via Kashgar, East Turkistan, land of ChiCom imperialist genocide
against Uyghurs and other Moslems, would clash in English on 15245,
per Aoki. OTOH, VOK continues to be plus 13760 circa 13760.2 (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 92.5 WBFM, May 25 at 2200 UT, KOMA-FM OKC is playing a
jazzed-up band version of the state anthem, ``Oklahoma``. The lead-in
to it is unrecognizable, and the lead-out coda includes a few notes of
``Boomer, Sooner``. I suspect this be a daily ritual at 5 pm local,
anywhen else? Listen for it on webcast if necessary.

This was amid an FM DX opening which failed to produce anything here,
despite a few 88+ MUFs on the DXMAP, even 103 MHz to the NW which is
what got me to start tuning: mainly somewhat open frequencies 92.1 &
92.9 shifting back & forth across KOMA. Some music surged up at 2155
UT on 92.1, but proved to be only KFXI, Foxy 92 from SW OK. The Es
opening continues poking barely above 88 MHz somewhere, past 0125 UT
May 26 (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, May 25 at 2217, NO signal from REE to US again today,
off or not propagating? Tuesday is an off-day for English, anyway:
never on T-days; nor S-days. 15520 is poor S3-S6 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, May 25 at 2216, VOT English is on today, lacking RTTY
QRM, but poor S9-S6. By 2248 music is good at S9+10, and keeps going
2254 with IS, 2300 TS and opening bonus German, but off by 2340
recheck, so no Brazuguese at 0000 this time. Something`s always
erroneous at Emirler.

[non] Besides Spain on M/W/F, there are NO overseas SW broadcasts in
English for us at 22-23. Romania is on but unsuitable: 5945 & 7310
Galbeni to western Europe, too low for us in summer; 7325 & 9790
Tsiganeshti to Japan; and one or two of them out of order (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 660 kHz, May 25 at 0615 UT, some 24 hours after 50/50 kW U2
KTNN Window Rock AZ was in well, no sign of it with KSKY Dallas
nulled, lending credence to my conclusion that it were ND then instead
of properly restricting signal to the east (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 28204-CW, May 25 at 1832, DE W0WF/B VVV -- call repeated
numerously before a blip and VVV seems to be at end of loop rather
than start. HF sporadic E opening. WJ5O`s 10m beacon list shows:

28.204 WØWF * SAINT CHARLES, MISSOURI # 20W, VERTICAL (*) Daylight New
16 June 14 --- that`s rather close under 500 miles. Note that the
number in call is zero, but this list uses the Scandinavian *letter*
crossed-O instead! QRZ.com does not:

``W0WF USA flag USA, JERRY D WATTS, SAINT CHARLES, MO 63303 USA
IF YOU COPY MY BEACON ON 28.204 PLEASE E-MAIL ME A SIGNAL REPORT AND
YOUR LOCATION TO W0WF.B@AOL.COM``

28285+CW, May 25 at 1834, JBA beacon split below 28286. Five in USA
are listed, NY, TX, AZ, FL, none of which correlate with the ones
IDed. Could narrow down with preciser frequency.

28281-CW, May 25 at 1841, DE W8EH EM79 --- heavy fading so many
iterations necessary to copy. It`s:

28.281 W8EH C MIDDLETOWN OHIO # 8W, GP VERTICAL --- QRZ.com:

``W8EH USA flag USA, ERNEST W HOWARD, JR, MIDDLETOWN, OH 45044 USA
W8EH/BEACON: 10 meters on 28.281 MHz in Middletown, OH. It is running
7 to 8 watts to a Cushcraft Ringo 20' above ground at 860' elevation.
If you want a beacon reception report confirmed by card, please send a
SASE, or addressed envelope and IRC. If you just want to tell me you
heard the beacons, just drop me an email.``

28199.5-CW, May 25 at 1850 UT, DE WA4OTD/B CARMEL, IN --- NOT listed
by WJ5O on this frequency but instead only at:

28.2788 WA4OTD C CARMEL, INDIANA # 5W, attic dipole New 19 Oct 2010

The seldom used comma character between CARMEL and IN is --..--
Even his QRZ.com page has the wrong frequency!

``WA4OTD USA flag USA, Leroy S Wignot, Carmel, IN 46032 USA
The 10M beacon on 28.278.8 MHz, is running again! Listen if you get a
chance and send signal report if you hear it! Wignot@yahoo.com. The
beacon is HTX-100 running 5 or 25 watts into dipole at 40 feet in my
attic.``

Around same time, 1838 UT, WWV audible on 25000; CB pileup on 27025-AM
but little else; no phone activity on 18 or 28 MHz; no hams at all on
24 MHz; no beacons or anything on low end of 50 MHz. As usual, 6M
DXMAP shows lots of sporadic E activity but mostly well below the 88+
MHz FMBC band threshold.

Another session starting at 2221: 28199.5, WA4OTD/B IN still in.

28286.5, May 25 at 2222 & 2304, WB6BIN from Long Beach CA again today

28193, VE4ARM: see CANADA. I`m mainly interested in beacons, but quick
tunearound for other Es: 27555-USB at 2307 freebanders, also 27440. CB
AM pileups 27285 & 27025 full of hets at 2308. A few phone contacts on
10m: Traverse City mentioned on 28350-USB, from or to? Are there any
ham beacons on 18, 21, 24 MHz? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2087 monitoring; next:

2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S

Our non-commercial broadcasts and website depend on voluntary support:
thanks this week to William Hassig, Mt Prospect IL, for a check on a
US bank to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702, ``in observance
of my second Moderna COVID-19 shot on Mon 3 May 2021`` --- that`s a
good idea!

One may also contribute via PayPal to woradio at yahoo.com
[not necessarily in US funds]. (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 11835, May 25 after 0600, routine bandscan detects no
signal at all from RV`s 3rd harmonic; off the air? Same 24 hours
earlier. However, NZ 11725 much weaker than usual so maybe just
propagation. Is really off, as Ron Howard reports May 25:

``[WOR] Radio Vanuatu currently off the air! Radio Vanuatu - Recently
noted off the air; no trace of a signal on their usual frequencies
with random checking. May 25, from 0530 to 0930 UT. Also per Bryan
Clark (May 24) - "No trace on 3945, 5040 or 7260 at present, at
1930 UTC." Ron, California`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs May 24-25, 2021  View Printable Version
Tuesday, May 25 2021

Logs
** SPAIN. 17855, May 24 at 2200, no signal from REE to North America;
off? Nothing else on band either, but no one else is even trying.
Token English is sufficiently audible on ME channel 15520 off the
back, S7-S3, better than 11940 for S America at S6 fading to S3.
Alison Hughes hosts today: first about how ex-Spanish colony Western
Sahara figures historically into the migrant problem at Ceuta &
Melilla on the other side of Morocco; 2216 next topic Eurovision Song
Contest of no interest to me (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, May 24 at 2159, VOT IS in clear with no RTTY, S9/S6,
but soon peaking S9+5/15 with news in English led by latest Turk COVID
stats.

7275, May 25 at 0300, no signal direct from VOT English to us; while
// 6165 for ME if on is totally blocked by RHC as long as it stay here
instead of 6145. BUT:

7275, May 25 at 0305 via UTwente, VOT is certainly on and S9/+15; //
6165 also audible somewhat stronger than mixer RHC adding up to S7-S8;
both 6165s of course far outside target areas (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 660, May 24 at 0601 UT, song in unknown language at ToH, no
news, suspect KTNN: Loops E/W with Dallas - Belch Springs` 700 watts
nulled, sounds like more than that; yes: into Dineh YL talk mixing in
some English words including ``truck driver``, and ``The Voice of the
Navaho Nation``, 0604 UT into chanting and drumming. Always a treat to
hear this first-nations station which altho 50/50 kW is supposed to
protect NYC at night, likely ND now or at least out of whack. Too much
signal to be leaking around the cardioid edges? NRC Pattern Book shows
not a cardioid but circle tangent west. But FCC AM Query:

https://transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/7ec7d326bd5e49bba284c1b6063ebeb7-2089.pdf

does show a cardioid with deepest nulls at 60 and 110 degrees, but
also an itty-bitty lobe in the middle of the `null` at 85 degrees (5
degree increments only calculated). The question is whether there be
any signal circa Hays KS on the direct path to WFAN; or 110 degrees
for Dallas? Another version of night pattern:
https://radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KTNN&service=AM&h=N
Daytime pattern is ND, so not so unusual to hear it after official
SR/before official SS, which are in May: 1215/0215 UT; June: 1200/0230
UT (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 690, May 24 at 0557 UT, S9/+10 of dead air from KGGF
Coffeyville KS, for at least two minutes; 0559 detailed local weather
but probably recorded hours ago (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 1030, May 24 at 0556 UT, `Red Eye Radio` mentioned on a
frequency where I haven`t noticed it before, but NRC AM Log shows the
only 1030 RER affiliate is KFAY, Farmington AR, so likely as one of my
closests. A strange one: altho CoL is Farmington, why? FAY obviously
stands for nearby Fayetteville, where its address is (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs May 23-24, 2021  View Printable Version
Monday, May 24 2021

Logs
** NORTH AMERICA. 6930-USB, May 24 at 0151, dramatic narration with
sombre music, S9+10 heavy storm noise level obscures where the SSB
peaks are, maybe S9; hard to follow, but mentions New World Order and
that space travel is a ``big charade``, so safe to conclude he`s a
wacko. ``Remember when ---`` over and over; 0157 just music; 0157.5
SSTV beepery, 0201 more music. These start as unID, eventually ID as
Wasteland Radio per SSTV image among several fuzzies:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,82008.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. RF 7, May 23 at 2119 UT, my TV set with rabbit ears only
which due to its elevation gets some OKC signals better than the roof
hi VHF/UHF yagi, lands on virtual 5-3 as I bandscan. I`ve long
wondered why KOCO bothered with only one subchannel, METV on 5-2. Now
there`s a 5-3, occupied by Shop LC. More totally worthless waste of
digital spectrum. Must be recent addition, but rabbitears.info already
has it. LC now stands for Low-Cost; ex-Liquidation Channel. Looks like
they specialize in jewelry.

I also scan thru a couple of the other multichannels: KOPX ``62`` on
RF 18 has six channels as shown in rabbitears so I won`t go thru them.
Pax/Ion used to have a second entertainment/rerun channel but that is
long gone.

``43``, KAUT is convoluted since its real transmitter is one of the
still few converted to ATSC-3 and therefore invisible on ordinary
tuners. Besides duplicating KAUT itself, Rabbitears shows that RF 19
KAUT really contains ATSC-3 versions of KFOR as well as extreme
competitor KOCO; and KOCB `34`` CW, and a subchannel of the station it
is owned by, KOKH, Cha/Rge!

Main-channel 43-1 KAUT independent programming ``Freedom 43`` is
axually on RF 27 as part of the package on its overlord, KFOR. 43-2
Court TV is axually on another station, RF 24 KOKH ``25``. So is 43-3
Escape (Mystery).

K17JN-D, Enid, May 23 at 2130 UT, is *still* black and silent on all
five 3ABN channels, on the air with strong signal metering but
conveying nothing, as it has been since at least May 12. Probably has
no local engineer-in-charge, and nearly no local would-be viewers to
complain, nor know where to do so (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** U S A. 18160-USB, May 23 at 2142, ``17 meter DX net``, but I hear
only a presumed US ham asking for non-US contacts; he makes a couple
but I never hear them, nor is he in any hurry to utter his own call.
BTW, 18.16 MHz = 16.52 metres using the 300/ conversion factor. You
don`t get to the real start of the *17* mb, until below 17647 kHz.
Meanwhile we have the nonsensical situation of the ``17`` m hamband
being by frequency, above instead of below the *16* m broadcast band.
But in numbering their bands, hams have ignored such details; ``15``
metres has to be below 20000 kHz, let alone below 21000. 21450 is
almost at the start of the *14* m band below there. At least ``12m``
is correct just below 25 MHz where AAMOF I haven`t heard any activity
in ages (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 28268.5-CW, May 23 at 2145, only one 10m beacon is JBA,
WB0BIN, alternating fast and slow WPM markers. Sounds familiar: yes, I
logged this a few times last July and once in August:
28.2865 WBØBIN C SABIN, MINNESOTA # 7W, GP VERTICAL New 22 April 18.
Reports for QSL were invited on website, but I never got a reply. When
that happens I am likely to conclude it`s another ham who
discriminates against ``inward-only monitors``, even tho beacons are
outward-only, impossible for two-way contacts. Sabin is in WC MN, just
SE of Moorhead/Fargo ND, 1159 km = 720 miles. Nor have I received even
an e-reply from WA6APQ beacon. Why bother; why bother.

Just before that I had only one phone signal on 18 MHz, but some
pileups on 27-MHz CB channels like 27025. No phone signals higher in
the 10m band, either. DXMAP keeps showing sporadic E MUFs just below
88 MHz FM band in spots, mostly much lower (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2087 monitoring: not confirmed Sunday May 23
at 2200 on Area 51 via WBCQ! 6159.899 is on the air, S7 into Virginia
SDR, but NO modulation, soon up to S9+5/10 but dead air until at least
2225. Recheck at 2228, now I hear the tail end with propagation
outlook, just in time for HRI to air next.

Meanwhile, WOR 2087 was running OK on the A51 webcast as well as the
other WBCQ from 7488.839 with UBMP to which I mainly listened online
tho also audible poorly on SW.

WOR 2087 confirmed Sun May 23 at 2300 on WRMI 7780, S9+20/30 into VA.

Also confirmed UT Mon May 24 at 0030 on WRMI 7730, VG direct.

Also confirmed UT Mon May 24 at 0130 on WRN North America webcast.

Also confirmed UT Mon May 24 at 0230 on WRMIs direct: 7780 S9/+10 and
5800 S9+20 but both with severe storm noise level -- none really close
but a large line from the Dakotas to western Kansas. Next:

1030 UT Wednesday WRMI 5850 to NW
2100 UT Wednesday WRMI 7780 to NE
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
2200 UT Wednesday WRMI 9955 [jammed?] to SSE
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S
