Glenn Hauser logs October 19-20, 2024  View Printable Version
Sunday, October 20 2024

Logs
** CHINA. 21530, Oct 20 at 0055, JBA Chinese is the OSOB so also the
SSOB: CNR1 jammer against SOH; EiBi shows CNR1 DRM could also be on
here, but not now (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA [and non]. 1141 kHz, Oct 20 at 0304, the het upon 1140
stations mainly XEMR, is back from presumed Cuba so the power must be
back on. Immediately retune to 890 to check for 889/891 carriers, not
yet, but WLS news is just now saying that power has been restored
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6000, Oct 20 at 0109 still no signal from RHC which might be
on if power be restored. Nor at 0306, but now 5025 R. Rebelde is back
with normal bigsig S9+20/40 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO [and non]. 800, Oct 20 at 0101 UT, heavy distorted music
QRMing KQCV, so now I have heard XEERG NL earlier than late at night
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6965 USB, Oct 20 at 0057, music and right into
Wolverine Radio ID and then SSTV beepery, S9/+15. Many more reports
here including a clear image of that same SSTV:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,135373.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6950 usb, Oct 20 at 0058, song at S8 vs high storm
noise level = HSNL from eastern New Mexico. These say it`s Sycko
Radio, which I understand is pronounced ``psycho``:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,135371.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 6970+ AM, Oct 20 at 0308, S9+10/20 of dead air,
presumably an unID pirate, now the OPOB. Others reported music
earlier, on and off:
https://www.hfunderground.com/board/index.php/topic,135382.0.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 11529.9, Oct 20 at 1449, JBA music S5/S6, presumed
pirate Hikari FM allegedly in Sonora, signature offset (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 930, Oct 20 at 0659 UT, dead air from WKY OKC,
past 0700 during which I catch an ID for KCCC, Carlsbad NM, which is
only 60 watts at night. WKY resumes about 0700.5 with `sports animal`
WWLS ID. That`s 98.1, also on 640. No mention of WKY itself? Not sure
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 1000 kHz, Oct 20 at 0302 UT dead air obviously
from my nearby KTOK OKC, presumably during newshole, maybe failed to
switch inputs compared to surrounding talk programming. Allows me to
hear under it some ESPN station, surely 50 kW WMVP Chicago, not
100-watt KSOO Sioux Falls (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY [and non]. 11785.004, Oct 19 at 2200, VOT English not off
the air, but might as well be, VP *marginal* signal into UTwente,
S8/S9 on meter but with flutter. Propagation disturbance? K index at
21 only 3 and 2/3. Unlistenable but I let it run and recognize some
program outros/themes: 2221 `The Energy Agenda`, music. 2230 `Turkey`s
Geomarked Products`, music. 2251 headlines of the olds. Now it`s
drifted to 11785.002+ and slightly stronger S9/+5. 2254 s/off as if
this had been the 1230 on 17620. Something`s always awry at Ankara.
2254.7 IS for a semiminute until off 2255.3*.

I immediately retune UTwente to 11800 and catch the sign-off of
simulEnglish from ROMANIA: It`s blasting in loud and clear, VG S9+25
and one IS to 2256*. Therefore, awful reception of VOT is *not* due to
propagation: could be on much reduced power and/or more likely totally
wrong antenna not aimed toward WEu as supposed to be, 500! kW at 325
degrees from Emirler, where something`s always wrong. RRI 11800 is
only! 300 kW at 300 degrees from Galbeni, per HFCC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2265 monitoring: not confirmed Sat
Oct 19 at 2300 on WTWW because 9475 is still off the air; tho 9930 is
L&C with TOMBS.

Confirmed UT Sunday October 20 at 0000 on WRMI 9955, good into Georgia
SDR, and sufficient into Pardinho, Brasil SDR.

Also confirmed UT Sunday October 20 at 0402 about 3 minutes into so
started the 0315v circa 0359 on WA0RCR, 1860 AM, MO. Heavy storm noise
direct but S9+18 into nearby remote.

Also confirmed Sunday October 20 at 1900 on IRRS SW via AM Italia,
1322.996- kHz, S9 into UTwente across Europe. Next:

2130 UT Sunday SW Radio, Germany 3975 & 6160;
2330 UT Sunday WRMI 7570 to NW;
0030 UT Monday WRMI 7780 to SW;

1630 UT Thursday SW Radio, Germany 6160.

** U S A. 4840, WWCR: one biweek ago I happened across this frequency
after 0315 UT Sunday Oct 6, and was astounded to hear an `Australian
DX Report` by Bob Padula that was soon very obviously more than FOUR
YEARS OUT OF DATE! See my log about that. I planned to check the
following week to hear what they would do then, but missed it. So this
week I make a point of monitoring it from the start. He never
explicitly gives a date it was recorded or to be originally broadcast.
This contains some of the *same* totally outdated DX loggings, but
it`s not identical. He starts by saying it`s almost summer time, so
would that be November? Certainly not June as previously. The dead
giveaway part about ``upcoming`` HFCC in Bulgaria canceled - which
would have been August *2020*, is never mentioned. Also dead giveaways
are the prop figures he cites initially: 10.7 cm flux at 70, SSN of
only 5, IPS says NO sunspots, so the new cycle has not yet started
(Now, of course, we are at solar max! someone could research exact
date for those). All his logs were between 1800-1830 UTC on some
unknown date, as if those would be of any particular use elsewhere
even when they were fresh. For amusement, I copy down all his tips. If
any of these are still correct, it`s pure coincidence!

7210 CRI Urumqi in Russian. 7235 VIRI in Hausa from 1820. 7265
Madagascar BBC English. Music pause at 0318. 7280 VOV Spanish. 7290
Romania with IRRS English [YES! still so, tho IRRS announces 7285!].
7315 CRI Kunming. 7340 CRI Kashi English. 7355 Singapore BBC Korean.
7395 CRI Kashi German. 7415 CRI Xian Persian. 7445 Madagascar BBC
English. 7465 Singapore BBC English. 7485 VOA Philippines Korean. 7540
VOA Udorn Pashto. 9360 RFA Kuwait Chinese. 9420 Voice of Greece Greek.
9460 Voice of Turkey Turkish. 9500 TWR Swaziland English. 9540 BBC
Oman Oromo. 9750 BBC Vatican French. 9800 WBCQ Woofferton Arabic! 9820
KBS Woofferton French. 9900 BBC Tajikistan Korean. 9920 R Thailand
Thai. 9940 TWR Swaziland Tigrinya. 9775 Woofferton with R. Ndarason
International in KANNADA [SIC, it`s Kanuri, don`t you know that this
is for Chad and Kannada is spoken in India?!?!]. Finishes at 0324, cut
to music.

I repeat, what a disservice WWCR provides with 4-year-old DX `news`.
Nor does Bob Padula himself know or care about this, or he could tell
them to stop it (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** UZBEKISTAN. 9509.9, Oct 20 at 0117, S5/S6 JBA talk off-frequency;
what could it be? Of course, as in EiBi, BBC English via Tashkent at
00-02; a site well-known? for offfrequenciness, and BBC apparently
oblivious to such damage to its reputation (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 15140, Oct 20 at 1444, S9/S6 JBA carrier, but soon off.
Could it be RHC? This frequency had been absent for weeks, long before
the latest National Blackouts. Nothing else scheduled now, but maybe
RFA Tajikistan tuning up for later Uighur at 16-17 or even VOA English
via Woofferton at 17-18? After 1500 nothing into Maryland SDR when RHC
would have been Esperanting on Sundays (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs October 18-19, 2024  View Printable Version
Saturday, October 19 2024

Logs
** COLOMBIA. 10125 CW, Oct 19 at 0627, HK3QQ at S5, usual Spanish
keyboard letters with errors (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 11860 & 11930, Oct 19 at 0630, Cuba fails to jam against
nothing, since there is an island-wide power failure! 5025 Rebelde
also absent, but not unusual even when power is on. Press about that:

2041 GMT Oct 18, New York Times via Brock Whaley, Aiken, SC:
``Power Outage Plunges All of Cuba Into Darkness -- The Cuban
government had just announced emergency measures to reduce electricity
use — then the power went out across the entire nation.

Cuba’s power grid failed and the entire nation plunged into darkness
Friday, less than a day after the government stressed the need to
paralyze the economy to save electricity in the face of major gasoline
shortages and large-scale, regular outages.

The electricity went out nationwide Friday morning after a failure at
a thermoelectric power plant in Matanzas, east of Havana, Cuba’s
Energy Ministry said on X.

The blackout came less than a day after the prime minister, Manuel
Marrero Cruz, held a late-night television address with state
officials to discuss the ongoing electricity crisis, which experts
said was the worst the nation — long accustomed to food and
electricity shortages — had ever experienced.

For weeks, the country has lacked the fuel to run the power grid,
which has left large parts of the nation without electricity for 15 to
20 hour stretches.``

** NORTH AMERICA. 11529.896, Oct 19 at 1510, JBA carrier direct from
Hikari FM pirate, allegedly in Sonora; at 1539 into Utah SDR when
measured, correctly calibrated with WWV, music with heavy disco beat,
S9; 1601 pause for quick produced announcement, unreadable but unseems
Hikari ID. Also still at 1916, S8 disco beat = twice per second or
120/minute. See also UNIDENTIFIED (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 27184.50 AM, Oct 18 at 2336, gospel music bigsig // 105.5
FM, K288FX, translator of KYLV 88.9 ``K-Love``, from local Enid CB
pirate, first time heard again in a while, but with equally strong
spoiler AM carrier on 27184.91 making huge het, but can be avoided by
LSB tuning. Same on 27224.81 AM with no spoiler.

Also: 27184.50 AM, Oct 19 at 1514 // 105.5 Hallelujah song, no spoiler
carrier but plenty of skip QRM; and also 27224.83 AM (Glenn Hauser,
Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 17855, Fri Oct 18 at 2201, token English from SNR, S9+20/30
direct, also audible on 17715, 15520, never 15390. Already missed
preview of topic as news is starting. For B24 from Oct 28, expect this
to be on 9690, M/W/F at 2300 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785.007-, Oct 18 at 2159, VOT not off the air with IS,
2200 accurate timesignal and s/on, S9+20/30 direct. At 2227 into
UTwente when measured, S9+15/25 but much clearer, with `Turkish Folk
tales`. 2252 s/off as if it had been the 1230 broadcast on 17620 --
something`s always awry at Ankara; 2253 IS; 2256 restart IS with
German IDs to chop 2259* -- something`s always erroneous at Emirler.
BTW, as expected in B24, this shifts to 5960 at 2300 UT (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2265 monitoring: confirmed Friday
October 18 at 2200 on WRMI 9955, S9+10/20 direct but undermodulated;
no jamming as entire Cuba is blacked out, tsk3.

Also confirmed Friday October 18 at 2230 on SW Gold Radio, Germany,
3975.003-, S7/S9 into UTwente.

NOT confirmed UT Saturday October 19 at 0300 on WTWW 5085: cut off the
air at precisely that time, I know not why.

Confirmed Saturday October 19 at 1436 the 1430 on SW Gold Radio,
Germany, 6160.001-, S9/+5 into UTwente with dittering QRM from 6164.
Followed after 1500 by Weekend Music Radio at 1525 check.

Also confirmed Saturday October 19 after 1600 on WRN North America
webcast.

``World of Radio heard on 6160 on Shortwave Gold at 1730 via a SDR in
Netherlands - Ron Trotto-WDX4KWI, Virden, Illinois, USA``

Also confirmed Saturday October 19 at 1734 on SW Gold Radio, Germany,
6160.001+, S9+15 into UTwente but heavy ACI from 6165 CRI English and
6164 RTTY - unless LSB tuned with reduced bandwidth. Also a few
syllables behind on 3975.003-, S9+8 with no QRM.

Also confirmed Saturday October 19 at 1930 on WRMI webcast only, and
on WRN North America stream.

Confirmed Saturday October 19 from 1940 the 1930v on WA0RCR, 1860 AM,
MO, S9+17 by groundwave into nearby SDR. Next:

2300 UT Saturday WTWW 9475 [irregular];

** U S A. 9475, October 19 before 0100, WTWW not on air here nor 5085,
but on by 0101 with SFAW? preacher, S9+40/52 direct, so bodes well for
WOR at 0300 --- NOT! 9475 unseems on the air at all lately, which may
nullify the only other scheduled WOR airing Saturday at 2300, which
was missing last week (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 7489.93, October 19 at 2359, S9+15/20 direct, FKB preacher
gets 1-minute warning tone on WBCQ, quickly wraps up, but then dead
air; Oct 20 at 0000, one canned ID interrupted by another, and finally
Wm Tell Overture theme of `AAAWWW`. Considerable storm noise and I
can`t copy all his interjexions. A&A are at home = Studio 9 in Deland
of Floriduh, right into discussion of Hurricane Milton which hit them
last week, so this one is live, and the Oct 12 one a rerun. Storm
damage there but they hunkered down and were OK with power out for
only 3 days. They were ready with Coleman stove for some hot meals.
Also advises running lamps with charcoal starter fluid. Lots of big
oak trees were blown down, not much damage to own property. HM spawned
137 tornados, one of which went nearby. Angela ``dresses up`` for the
radio - I guess not seminude this time? Thanks God for Gov. Desantis
in a ``MAGA state``. I suspend at 0015. At 0048 reads some Free Radio
Weekly items from last week`s issue as this week`s not in yet,
including ``new`` Hikari FM, my log on 11529.9 but not credited. Runs
a minute overtime, 0101 JIP Hal Turner. Also checked 3265 and 5130
finding no signals, and 6160- was JBA direct (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 9960, Oct 19 at 0625, R. Vanuatu, S7/S8 with announcements
in Bislama; unchecked after 0700 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VATICAN. 15595, Oct 19 at 0632, VR in English, S7/S9, the SSOB
along with = 15770 WRMI in Spanish. Lucky me, English quarter hour at
0630 to ME is scheduled Saturdays only per EiBi (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 11515, Oct 19 at 0628, JBA carrier direct, and a
slightly stronger JBA carrier on 11530.02, probably Kurdo/Turko radio
war; see also NORTH AMERICA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

A bunch of AWR logs from Masset, BC  View Printable Version
Saturday, October 19 2024

Logs
I paid a brief visit to Masset this past week and during this time, I spent
a fair amount of it checking the various AWR transmissions from numerous
sites. Here is a selection of what was heard (and not). All of these,
outside of Guam, cease on October 26th. I'll especially miss the Volondry,
Madagascar AWR transmissions, as reception was virtually always very good.
Any errors are mine alone! 73, Walt Salmaniw

GERMANY 11960, 0302-, AWR Tigrinya Oct 16 Excellent reception in Tigrinya
from Nauen. The only other 03:00 transmission from AWR is a local
broadcast from Madagascar in Malagasy on 6065 kHz. I can see the carrier,
but that's about it from Masset. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

AUSTRIA 11955, 1800-, AWR Arabic Oct 16 Good reception in Arabic to North
Africa. The other listed AWR transmission is on 9900 in Korean from Guam
(100 kW/318 deg), but this one is poor/fair, as there seems to be cochannel
interference (?jamming) and a rumble. Also perhaps it's Radio Cairo's sick
transmitter (that one in Turkish). (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

GERMANY 9780, 2000-, AWR French Oct 15 Fair reception with IS and English
announcement into French programming to North Africa // 9555 (Nauen as
well 250 kW/185 deg) a little weaker. Also on at 20:00 with AWR
programming is 11955 in Dyula language to West Africa at good level
although with a transmitter whistle (Moosbrunn, Austria with 100 kW/210
deg), 11800 in Moore language to West Africa at good to very good level
(Nauen, Germany 250 kW/200 deg), and 9900 in Korean, very poor (Agat, Guam
with 100 kW/315 deg). (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

GERMANY 11790, 2030-, AWR Yoruba Oct 15 Fair reception with IS and English
AWR ID into Yoruba language to West Africa. At same time, French to West
Africa at good to very good level via Moosbrunn, Austria on 15440 with 100
kW/210 deg. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

GERMANY 12040, 2113-, AWR Nigerian Pidgin Oct 18 Very good reception,
although somewhat weak modulation with many English words, giving AWR
address with POB in Nigeria. The only other AWR transmission this half
hour is via Guam in Mandarin at fair level on 11750 (100 kW/315 deg). At
21:30, 12040 switches to Twi language. Interesting that the best SNR
reception is on my 110 deg DKAZ, which just might be off the back end of
the antenna, or via LP otherwise. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

GERMANY 12040, 2100-, AWR Nigerian Pidgin Oct 15 OC with a bit of a buzz,
then AWR sign on at 21:00 with fanfare and announcing Pidgin broadcast.
This is Nigerian Pidgin. Fair to good reception. At same time, 11750 from
Guam (100 kW/315 deg) is in Mandarin but only very poor. (Salmaniw,Masset,
BC)

GUAM 12060, 1530-1559, AWR Tibetan Oct 18 Most days it's in English, but
scheduled in Tibetan on Fridays and Saturdays. Fair reception with
somewhat muddy audio (the speech component). Lots of Tibetan sounding
music. Fair reception. Sign off announcement in English From the
beautiful Pacific island of Guam, this is Adventist World Radio the Voice
of Hope. Now concluding our educational and inspirational program at (?)
100,000 Watts... (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MADAGASCAR 11850, 1755-, AWR Kiswahili Oct 16 Superb reception (as is so
often the case from Volondry to Masset) with a lovely presumed Swahili
female choir. Listed in the AWR schedule as 'Kiswahili'to East Africa.
Music sounds a lot like Pacific Islands music! To 17:59 without any
announcement, then transmitter cut. During the 17:30 half hour, also heard
were the following AWR transmissions: 17570 in Masai to East Africa at
good level via Nauen (250 kW/115 or 155 deg depending on source...latter
makes more sense), 17725 in Oromo at good level via Nauen (250 kW/145 deg)
to East Africa. Nothing heard on the scheduled Korean broadcast from
Trincomalee on 15530. We now know that the site has been down since late
September. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MADAGASCAR 11875, 1630-, AWR Somali Oct 15 Unfortunately, a bit of a mess
here due to cochannel CRI Urumqui in Russian. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MADAGASCAR 11875, 2200-, AWR Vietnamese Oct 15 Superb reception from 22:00
in Vietnamese with a preacher speaking. From Volondry, Madagascar with 250
kW/50 deg. At this hour, also in Dayak to SE Asia on 15320 (poor to fair)
via Tashkent. Mandarin on 9490 (poor to fair) via Tashkent with 100 kW/76
deg, 15625 via Guam (very poor) with 100 kW/330 deg. English 1/2 hour is
not on today despite their schedule of Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday via
Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. Confirmed by several Indian region SDRs. At
22:30, Javanese is listed on 15320 from Tashkent, but only a carrier is
seen. Too weak for any audio. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MADAGASCAR 17730, 1613-, AWR Marathi Oct 15 Best AWR transmission during
this half-hour with lovely Indian music with many mentions of AWR. Not
quite armchair copy but close. AWR is closing most of their broadcasts
after the A24 season ends on October 26th. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

MADAGASCAR 17790, 0550-, AWR Arabic Oct 17 Interesting to listen to this
frequency. Good to very good level to before the top of the hour. The
transmitter cut, and within a minute, on came Nauen with an equally good
level (250 kW/200 deg) with AWR fanfare and into French. //for French was
15220 (250 kw/200 deg) also from Nauen. At the same 06:00 hour, Arabic was
superb on 15560 (100 kW/75 deg) via Moosbrunn, Austria. That was a much
more orderly transition compared to the mess on 17515 before and after
02:00!. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

SRI LANKA (NON) 15625, 2308-, AWR Oct 15 No sign at all from AWR
Trincomalee and confirmed that they were not broadcasting in listed
Mandarin via several SE Asian SDRs. The only other AWR transmission during
this time period is in Khmer on 9700 via Tashkent which is only very poorly
heard in Masset. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

TAJIKISTAN 15515, 0200-, AWR English Oct 17 English is transmitted after
the Chinese dialects between 01 and 02 via Tashkent. However, about 14
minutes before the TOH, presumed Dushanbe came on with a very dirty
transmitter on 1514.89 causing quite a loud hum. The OC remained past the
TOH and didn't leave the channel clear until 02:12. Under Tashkent, one
can easily hear the AWR fanfare and announcing English as the next program,
with Tashkent in Chinese dialect continuing until 2 minutes past the TOH
(02:02). Not a pleasant listen due to the clash. Also someone is sending
CW intermittently on 15513 kHz, starting with 'VVV'. Perhaps my
assertion that the off-channel transmitter was from Dushanbe is incorrect.
Sometime before the BOH (I checked and it was 02:12), that trasmitter cut,
so perhaps it was actually Tashkent all along. Still, the Dushanbe
transmitter is VERY dirty with audible medium pitched whine, as well as a
low frequency warble. Preaching until about 02:45, and then music with a
South Asian bent. At 02:57 the usual AWR multi-lingual IDs, and just
before 03:00, announcing that the following program would be in English.
No, the transmitter cut a few seconds after 03:00. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)

UZBEKISTAN 15515, 0100-, AWR Min Nan Chinese Oct 16 Excellent reception via
Tashkent (listed, although I really wonder with how strong the signals have
been both last night and tonight). Listed in Min Nan Chinese which sounds
quite a lot softer than Mandarin. Easier on the ears! At 01:30, AWR
fanfare and in English, announced the following program in Cantonese (also
much less harsh compared to Mandarin). Sources list the same site, but at
100 kW but with same azimuth. (Salmaniw,Masset, BC)
