Glenn Hauser logs April 8-9, 2020  View Printable Version
Thursday, April 09 2020

Logs
** AUSTRIA. John Figliozzi replies on the WOR iog to my 6155 log:
``OK, it’s not on HF and it’s not classical music… but those looking
for English language news from Austria will find plenty of it on the
bilingual (German/English) ORF domestic youth network fm4 streamed
over the Internet from: https://fm4.orf.at John Figliozzi`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 13650, April 8 at 2329, CRI relay `Portuguese` service of
music only is S9+20/30 but extremely suptorted. Something`s always
wrong at RadioCuba. Why in the world haven`t they just turned off this
failed service months ago? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 6185-, April 8 by 1907 UT, now I can pull a JBA carrier
slightly off-frequency-minus as a 2-megameter day-path remnant of
reactivated XEPPM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 27186, April 8 at 1910 and still 2243 recheck, some lokel
yokel is jamming the prime CB frequency with continuous S9+10 buzz.
Well, there are plenty of other channels, all with zero activity
(Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, April 8 at 2244, JBA signal presumed VOT active
today. Wonder if something else be erroneous at Emirler, like reduced
power, reception has been so poor lately even when on.

7275, April 9 at 0258, VOT IS & English IDs, fair via Alexandria SDR,
but undermodulated with some hum; timesignal one second late but may
have been internet delay. This time YL instead of usual OM announcer,
opening without full wrong English schedule but only ``this`` is the
1230 on 15450! plus satellite info; something`s always awry at Ankara;
into news of topic-V; 0307 enough already, into Turkish song. At least
no QRhaM to be heard (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2028 monitoring: confirmed Wednesday April 8
at 2100:20 on WBCQ 7490.1v, fair via Alexandria SDR.

Also confirmed UT Thu April 9 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, JBA in storm noise
level from along the Ohio Valley; good via Alexandria VA SDR; and not
via UTwente, now with this bad news in red:

``On April 8, the antenna seems to have developed a defect, so only
very few signals are still detectable. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic,
university buildings are closed, so it is currently unclear if and
when a repair can be attempted.``

WOR 2029 should be ready by early UT Fri April 10 and first American
SWBC at 2200 on WRMI 9955 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 5970, April 8 at 2327, S9+10 of dead air; must be WEWN on
early from second Spanish transmitter not scheduled to start until
0000; first one is still on 12050, VP with music. BTW, HFCC shows they
also employ two different antennas, a 206 and a 218 respectively at 5
degrees difference in azimuth, and both 500 kW transmitters run at
only 100. I wonder if they are still operable if desired or affordable
at 500? IIRC they used to be registered as 350 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Glenn Hauser logs April 7-8, 2020  View Printable Version
Wednesday, April 08 2020

Logs
** ALGERIA [non]. 7295, April 8 at 0543, Arabic talk, not Qu`ran, as
RTA via FRANCE is scheduled this hour only. But strangely, also jammed
by rapid tone pips, or carriers beating, measured about 0.7 kHz both
above and below, circa 7294.3 and 7295.7. Nothing else scheduled here
worthy of jamming. Maybe by Ameriham p-o`d over this intrusion? (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** AUSTRIA. 6155, April 8 at 0549, classical music at S9/+10, better
signal than usual, but noisy, in the last remnant of SW programming
from this country, the token relay of Ö1 scheduled with 300 kW ND at
0500-0620 except Sat/Sun to 0610. Remember when the end of this used
to include a few minutes of news in English? Not any more.

But I go looking for the website (not included on Hitlist --- Alan?)
and finally find this for today at 7:33-7:52 am local time:
https://radiothek.orf.at/oe1/20200408/600688
Audio and playlist of this `Guten Morgen Österreich` segment starting
with Brahms. The transmission is on the news network but includes bits
of classical music apparently promoting what will be played in full
later (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CHINA. 7810, April 7 at 2222, JBA talk vs S5-S6 noise level.
Unusual to hear anything here, but yes, it`s one of a multitude of
Sound of Hope frequencies; Aoki/NDXC shows 24 hours including the
single hour in Cantonese at 15-16, 1 kW via Miaoli, Taiwan site and of
course *jammed, surely what I am hearing instead, CNR1.

Looking for any other E Asian signals on 7 MHz band, finds JBA talk on
7395, which could be CNR2 via Xianyang 594 site or CRI Chinese via
Urumqi, EAST TURKISTAN, land of imprisoning and brainwashing Uyghurs.

This week`s FRONTLINE on PBS is an excellent hour about this issue:
"China Undercover" New, 4/07/2020, Season 37 / Episode 18,
Investigative, Documentary, Politics, Public Affairs, Social Topic

"Frontline" delivers a special undercover report from China's
secretive Xinjiang region, where the communist regime has imprisoned
masses of Muslims and is testing sophisticated surveillance technology
on the population. Credits: Will Lyman (Narrator)

Also streamable, 54+ minutes:
https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/china-undercover/
altho wolfie laments it`s geoblocked from reaching Germany (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 6145 >> // JBM 6000, UT Wed April 8 at 0001 tune-in, RHC
English already on amid Arnie on `DXers Unlimited` mit-week edition,
in fact closing at 0002. This segment is normally in the middle of
each English hour, like :25-:35 as in DX/SWL/MEDIA programs. RHC clox
must be way off. Was English axually running on these frequencies from
a semihour earlier? At 23-24 it would normally be on 5040 & 11880. Did
not get around to checking whether subsequent repeats were also askew,
at 01-07. Following DXUL, report from Puerto Rico on the COVID 19
situation there. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** MEXICO. 6185, April 7 at 2211, no trace of even JBA carrier from
XEPPM. Manuel Méndez, Spain had reported it:

``6185, Radio Educación, Ciudad de México, back on air, heard
1820-1830, 06-04 via SDR Kiwi remote receiver in Brownsville, South
Texas, identification and songs.``

6185, April 8 at 0001, now I have a carrier, just barely? modulated,
as so often before.

6185, April 8 at 1725, I myself tune the Brownsville SDR, courtesy of
TWR, and find a fairly good and well-modulated signal in Spanish,
interview about economy, water supply in Mexicali, class warfare, 1730
song break, slightly off-frequency-minus as usual; which has to be
XEPPM during its secret daytime broadcast; why can`t they do so well
at night? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. Convoluted tropo blobs over OK forecast by Bill Hepburn,
so I bandscan from 1513 UT April 8: Lots of BAD signals on open
channels including RF 45, no doubt KOTV Tulsa, but only two are
decoding, from Tulsa market:

RF 28, 44-1 Ion
RF 20, 19-1 KQCW-HD during Dr Oz show. This one in solid until finally
starts to break up and lose out at 1705 UT. And BTW has *no*
subchannels, unusual waste of spectrum but assures its only program
can be as HD as possible (GLenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9830, April 7 at 2211, VP signal from VOT, JBA talk,
unusable but at least is on today. Alan Roe reported to WOR iogroup:

``Programming on the Voice of Turkey (at least in the English service,
I've not checked other languages yet) seems to be reduced to a 5
minute news programme and a repeat of "Turkey's Tourist Attractions"
with the rest of the 50/55 minutes comprising Turkish music without
announcements. Noted today (7 April during 1230 transmission on 15450
kHz) and also a couple of times over recent days when checked. I'm
assuming another casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Alan Roe,
Teddington, UK`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. WORLD OF RADIO 2028 monitoring: last two SWBCs:
2100 UT Wednesday WBCQ 7490v to WSW
0100 UT Thursday WRMI 7780 to NE

Full schedule including AM, FM, webcasts, satellite, podcasts:
http://www.worldofradio.com/radioskd.html
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. What`s really on WRMIs, UT Wed Apr 8 at 0100?

5010 // 5850, music with BB IDs, Oldies?
5800, Taiwan in Spanish, maybe new show but missed hearing date
9395, RAE in Spanish only here; maybe to be multilingual
9455, Hal Turner
9955, Wavescan (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 9330, April 8 at 1359-1400+, no signal from WLCR via WBCQ,
nor on 13590 now registered starting at 1400. Are they keeping trying
to get the 500 kW monster to QSY?

9330, April 8 at 1708, now it`s on and audible but VP in English. Hard
to believe it`s even half-power 250 kW at 300 degrees as registered if
it were on 15105 at 15-19.

Neither WBCQ nor WLCR make it easy to find their basic SW schedule!
Finally reached this:
https://www.worldslastchance.com/wlc-radio-broadcast-schedule.html
which shows nothing but 9330 for unnamed WBCQ, but also what we know
is via Woofferton UK, in Arabic:
18-21 on 9800, 21-24 on 6015

Haven`t looked at AW`s twitfeed lately: just generic promotion;
hunkered down in FL and lately working on high-power spotlights,
another of his passions; and promoting UV light to kill virus (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 15555-USB, April 7 at 2216, WJHR gospel huxter is still on
past 2200 but even propagating at S5 level; must benefit from a bit of
HF sporadic E (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

OK, it’s not on HF and it’s not classical music… but those looking for English language news from Austria will find plenty of it on the bilingual (German/English) ORF domestic youth network fm4 streamed over the Internet from:
