Glenn Hauser logs February 5-6, 2020  View Printable Version
Thursday, February 06 2020

Logs
** CUBA. 6145, Feb 5 at 0713, the only RHC frequency still on air, but
JBM at S7-S9. Other English channels of The Cuban Five are OFF: 5040,
6000, 6060, 6100. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CUBA. 15696 & 15704 approx., Feb 5 at 1534, squealyspurs in
sidebands of CRI Plus relay in English; and a weaker one about 15692.
These are not evident every day; you never know, but something or
other is always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** KOREA NORTH [non]. Ron Howard replies to my 5955 log of Shiokaze:

``Hi Glenn, Feb 4, indeed found Shiokaze changed frequencies. Now ex:
7345, is clear for just CNR1 mixing with Thazin Radio, without
Shiokaze QRM (1300-1400). Found one Shiokaze frequency myself, on
6145, at 1352. Per Hiroshi: JSR Shiokaze, February 4:
1300-1400 6145 // 7245
1405-1435 6070 // 7325
1600-1700 5955 // 6020
Ron, California`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 1319.96, Feb 5 at 2112 UT, KCLI Clinton still dead air
while skywavers are QRMing already from AR/KS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. Re my report of unID DRM-like noise on 7335-7350, Feb 4 at
1553, Walt Salmaniw, BC, replies UT Feb 5:

```Nothing noted DRM tonight at 0400 check. Note this posting at
DRMNA, though:
``On the 4th of February, USAGM Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB)
began testing Radio Marti in DRM from Greenville. The transmitter
being used is a venerable Continental Electronics 617-A 50 kW ISB
transmitter, a Transradio DMOD3 DRM modulator and a content server
from RF Mondiale. Antenna is a Rhombic (BR31) oriented 174 degrees
True. Peak power is around 50 kW but DRM average power is just over 5
kW. Check 41 Meters for further tests. Reception reports to
gstraub@usagm.gov`` 73, Walt``
Original was from Fibber. It linx to this more complete but no times
or frequencies!
http://drmnainfo.blogspot.com/
``Tuesday, February 4, 2020 == DRMNA EXCLUSIVE - Radio Marti on DRM!
Channeling the late and legendary Willis Conover, Radio Marti hit the
air today for the first time ever on DRM - playing JAZZ! You read that
right!
On the 4th of February, USAGM Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB) began
testing Radio Marti in DRM from Greenville. The transmitter being used
is a venerable Continental Electronics 617-A 50 kW ISB transmitter, a
Transradio DMOD3 DRM modulator and a content server from RF Mondiale.
Antenna is a Rhombic (BR31) oriented 174 degrees True. Peak power is
around 50 kW but DRM average power is just over 5 kW. Check 41 Meters
for further tests. Reception reports to gstraub@usagm.gov
DRM North America indeed. How cool is this - DRM and Jazz on on the
North American continent. This is what DRMNA is all about!
Posted by us at 7:53 PM``
More from the DRMNA iog:
``I. I am receiving the VOA DRM transmission on 7345 kHz here in the
Atlanta area even though my shortwave antenna was blown down very
recently and is lying on the ground in several pieces! The Screen ID
shows two separate audio streams, Radio Marti and Voice of America.
{No time given! But post dated Feb 5}
2. I cannot decode the audio because it is using the latest xHE mode
and the Dream software does not have that capability.
3. The KiwiSDR web receivers do have the xHE decoders (DRM extension)
and I have listened to the audio on several KiwiSDR receivers in the
SE USA. 73, -Zyg- AF4MP
Brendan Wahl Feb 5 #7184
They're kinda/sorta visible out here on the West Coast, but I have a
faint CNR1 broadcast co-channel. No go in other words. Very weak on
the waterfall so far. Brendan {no time given!}
According to VOACAP the signal is directed towards Cuba, with most of
the signal covering the Atlantic Ocean south of North Carolina and
limited westwards to the Eastern States. As the day progresses the
signal area will expand, at first eastwards towards the night time,
and then westwards across the US as the night sets in. The coverage
will also expand southwards to South America as daylight fades away.
-Zyg- AF4MP`` {no time given!}
Look for further posts here:
https://groups.io/g/DRMNA/messages?start=2:2020:480
Were any of these before 1600 UT as in my first log? Recheck Feb 5 at
1538, no sign of DRM-like noise 7335-7350; but just now, 0158 UT Feb
6, there it is, DRM noise 7340-7345-7350; 7340-AM station RRI
separable by LSB tuning; and more RM on 7355-AM (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2019 monitoring: confirmed
Wednesday February 5 at 2100 on WRMI 7780, VP on portable.
Also confirmed Wed Feb 5 from 2200:30 on WBCQ 7490.25v, F-G S8-10.
Also confirmed UT Thu Feb 6 at 0100 on WRMI 7780, fair with storm QRN
via UTwente SDR.
WOR 2020 should be ready for download/podcasts by late Feb 6 or early
UT Feb 7 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 4840, Feb 5 at 0716, this VG WWCR signal is in dead air;
3215 is S9+10 but JBM, still with BS? 5890 is off tonight as it should
be; and the other one, 5935 S9+10/20, fair with DGS. Clearly, managing
more than one broadcast at a time is beyond their attention span;
altho the fourth may have been dumb luck, while everybody zzz at 1300
WWCR Ave., if any (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 1090, Feb 5 at 0703 UT tune-in, dead air of course from KAAY
Little Rock, until 0705 cuts into tail of SRN news; 0705.5 starts
music, a few seconds later cuts to other music, gospel. Something`s
always wrong at Cumulus KAAY (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Pacific JBA MW carrier search, Feb 5 at 1345: only
774 and 828 from the NW, surely the NHKs. A minute early could not
hear FEBC S Korea on 1566. Need to awaken earlier before LSR now
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
Glenn Hauser logs February 4, 2020  View Printable Version
Wednesday, February 05 2020
Logs
** CUBA. 6060, Feb 4 at 0643, this is the best of The Cuban Five, in
strength and modulation; then 5040 good; 6145 weaker than 6100 but
with more modulation; 6000 is S9+20/30 but suptorted. Something`s
always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 13700 & 13740, Feb 4 at 1525, both RHC Spanish altho 13740 is
supposed to be off by now; and no spurs from 13700 for a change.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 11880, Tue Feb 4 at 2222, RHC English, VG S9+20/30 with
`DXers Unlimited` until 2229, but Arnie refers to 2019 as ``this
year`` and to a ham DXpedition upcoming on November 26 --- so it must
be an old repeat, wherein any propagation info would also be very
outdated. Something`s always wrong at RHC.
11850, meanwhile, RHC Spanish, Feb 4 at 2230 is S9+10/20 but
suptorted/JBM. Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
** IRELAND [non]. 7290, Tue Feb 4 at 1855, via UTwente SDR, open
carrier already for IRRS via Saftica? Romania, off at 1856*, back on
at *1858.5, 1900 joining `Aïda` theme late, also with a break in it,
sign-on and right into Brother Epston(?) at Crosscurrent(?)
Ministries, Cuba, Missouri, on European Gospel Radio. I was checking
how it would open after yesterday`s late join into WORLD OF RADIO
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** JAPAN. 5955, Feb 4 at 1603 carrier, then with some rock music JBA,
presumably Shiokaze on latest frequency, altho Ukrainian from Romania
is also scheduled. Before 1600, CRI on here (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. RF 29, ``48-1``, KOCY, OKC, Estrella TV
affiliate, has a new logo! Just noticed UT Feb 5, a 4-pointed star in
blue rather than 5, each point a different color:
http://www.estrellatv.com/
I can`t say this is an improvement. The old logo can still be seen on
some of their shows, like on a mug, but not on the bug; and KOCY will
have to redesign their ID slide. Why:
``Estrella TV @estrellatv
Nos gustaría presentar el nuevo nombre y nuevo logotipo de nuestra
empresa madre- @estrellamedia_
. Nos entusiasma iniciar esta nueva era con nuestro público fiel.
Están listos? http://Estrellamedia.com #BrillamosMas #Brillamoscontigo
#SoyEstrellatv
1:28 AM · Feb 4, 2020·Twitter for iPhone
Estrella TV @estrellatv
The Estrella TV network is home to the most innovative and
entertaining Spanish TV programming on the planet: Tengo Talento, Rica
Famosa Latina, iTestigo, etc.
Estrella Media Inc @estrellamedia_
Estrella Media, is a leading vertically integrated, multi-platform,
Spanish-language media company in the U.S.``
It has ten O&O TV stations including LA, Dallas, Houston. Corporate HQ
in Burbank, CA, a.k.a. Liberman Broadcasting Media, Inc. (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 353-MCW kHz, Feb 4 at 0707 UT, mix of IN and LI, NDB beacons
of 100 and 400 watts resp. at International Falls MN and Little Rock
AR.
420-MCW kHz, Feb 4 at 0702 UT, mix of FQ and PK, NDB beacons, both 25
watts, at Fairmont MN, and Olathe+ KS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 13927-USB, Feb 5 at 1527, Roadie (sp?) 33 in contact about
engine issue, bound for Quonset, but turning around back to Andrews;
other ID fonetikaly as ``Mars Radio 3JI, out`` (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
** U S A. 15740, Feb 4 at 1922, big S9+10/20 open carrier from
Grimesland, no Marti modulation like yesterday, just warming up for
1930 jump to 15730 to continue VOA French up to that hour via Botswana,
a nonsensical site switch in the middle of the broadcast. Is there
some arcane rule about the number of hours or dollars each one may
expend?
11720, Tue Feb 4 at 2050, another Grimesland warmup already, 2100 news
and 2105, ``the best music today, now from VOA-One``.
In my quest to ascertain just what subgenres of music appear during
this hour, no help from VOA Africa program schedule, I should have
consulted Alan Roe`s Music on Shortwave first, which fills in gaps:
Sun Country Hits USA
Mon The Soul Lounge
Tue Wed Sat The Hits
Thu Top 20 Countdown
Fri Music Time in Africa
These are all part of VOA One, and besides 11720 grv are on only one
other SW frequency, 6195 bot. You will note huge variety of American
music genres are overlooked, notably classical (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
** U S A. 7490.2v, Feb 4 at 2245, WBCQ with an `AAAWWW` playback
answering question from caller, what is the model of the 500 kW
transmitter. He has to look it up: Continental 420-D-DRM (capable),
then plugs special $ 15/hour rate on 5130, and quotes some of the
programming there which is outdated; so a rather old show and I think
the $ 15 rate is also expired: rerunning such info as was could be
rather misleading to prospects.
Meanwhile, not a peep out of WBCQ-6 9330, since January 16, when that
Blown screen bypass capacitor - antenna piece failed; how`s that going
for repairs/replacement?
Meanwhile, I catch up on twits outlining further problems, captions:
``Allan Weiner @AllanWBCQ · Jan 31
Yes. Brand new transmitter and the PA tube socket screen ring shorts
out (again). So more downtime on the worlds Superstation. Sorry but
not of our doing. CEC-not quite designed the PA input stage right.
But-again-no one listens to Allan (me). 7490/5130khz still there for
you.
Allan Weiner @AllanWBCQ · Jan 30
We try. 9330khz superstation still down as the big 500kw PA tube
socket is being rebuilt. Sad but true. 7490/5130 kHz on with the best
in shortwave programming. It is always worth your listening in. Radio-
lots of fun. Still at it 100 years later 👏 😄
Allan Weiner @AllanWBCQ · Jan 23
Always doing the radio thing. Testing. Broadcasting. Tuning. All to
provide great radio for the shortwave masses. Kindly keep listening to
7490/5130/6160khz. More to come. Continental Electronics up pulling
the BIG tube socket on the 500killowatter. $ 2.5 million and this?``
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 5890, Feb 4 at 0638, S8 to S9+10 of dead air from WWCR,
wasted watts as frequently happens on Tuesdays, at a time when this
transmitter is supposed to be off. About same level as 5935 with PMS
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 5970, Feb 4 at 2356 tune-in, WEWN Spanish saying it`s about
to QSY from 12050 to 5970 --- but it`s already there! Then I check
12050 and it`s inaudible. However, WEWN has admitted that two
different transmitters are used, so they could overlap. 5970 now is
S9+10/20, into Salve Regina chanting/IS (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 6055, Feb 4 at 1555 past 1628, S9-S6 of open carrier. R.
Nikkei is supposed to be off by 1500, and so is AWR Madagascar. One of
best signals on band, like 5955 CRI Beijing English, and 5845 BBC
Tinang, Philippines, Korean (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
UNIDENTIFIED. 7335-7350, Feb 4 at 1553, sounds like DRM noise over
this range but it`s 15, not 10 kHz wide; vs RHC 7340-AM remnant. No
DRM is known at any time on 7340 or 7345 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
Glenn Hauser logs February 2-3-4, 2020  View Printable Version
Tuesday, February 04 2020
Logs
DX/SWL/MEDIA PROGRAMS updated Feb 3:
http://www.worldofradio.com/dxpgms.html
** ARGENTINA [non]. 5800, Feb 4 at 0133, RAE AAM relay via WRMI
succeeds this UT Tuesday, after tango, interview about a national park
in Patagonia, good via Rockport ME KiwiSDR with some static crashes
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 13564 & 13632 approx., Feb 3 at 1523, FM/AM spurblobs out of
RHC 13700; breakfast interrupted finding the others until 1543: 13498,
13768, 13837, 13905, 13972. The two outermost were traces only.
Something`s always wrong at RHC (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** CUBA. 15700, Feb 3 at 1547, China Plus relay is S9+30 but just
barely modulated. Something`s always wrong at RadioCuba (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 1319.96, Feb 3 at 1915 UT, for at least the
third afternoon in a row (and 24h?) dead air only from KCLI Clinton,
always way off-frequency; trace of other audio; and by 2059 recheck,
skywave building up vs the KCLI LAH, ID for KWHN Fort Smith AR and ABC
News sounder; CCI and by 2106 an ID from KLWN Lawrence KS, along with
FM 101.7, sports-talk, my other closest 1320.0. KLWN is only 500/250
watts U1; KWHN is 5000/5000 U2; neither in NRC AM Log with network A =
ABC, but KWHN with Ar = Arkansas Radio Network (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
** PERU. 5980, Feb 3 at 2351, JBA carrier from R. Chaski under
pointless Cuban jamming, until autocutoff at 2353:10.5*. Last check
was Jan 27 until 2353:23*, or 12.5 seconds later, 7 days earlier,
averaging 1.8 seconds earlier per noctem, rather than previous dekaday
span average of 1.95; perhaps within margin of error, but of my timing
or their timer? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** PHILIPPINES. 9344.975, Feb 3 at 1551, gospel rock at first thought
English, then Chinese, and Chi announcement. It`s FEBC at 14-16 via
Iba site; not worth jamming (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** SCOTLAND [non]. (7490.24v), Feb 3 after 0100, `Encore` classical
music on WBCQ; VG reception via webcast, unlike SW; unlike somewhat
defective WWCR 9350, 28 hours earlier, but same misplaced announcement
in the middle of William Tell Overture. Only last week`s playlist for
25/1 is still shown on website. Still a big fan of this rare service
and wish the best for it! (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** TURKEY. 5960, Feb 3 at 2327, NO signal from VOT English, AWOL yet
again. What is going on here? Unseems severe technical problems,
rather severe operational problems, like irresponsible and/or drowsy
kids running Emirler. Does this sporadicity not get back to
management? Erdogan might throw them in jail (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U K [non]. 7445, Feb 3 at 1908, BBC English already propagating
from Talata, MADAGASCAR shortly after noon here tnx to 315-degree
azimuth --- but, just barely modulating, tsk. Quite a long span for
BBCWS, 15-20 UT, but two parts of it colliding with Iran and East
Turkistan, not now.
7445, rechecked Feb 3 at 2220, now Chinese with flutter, i.e. CNR1
jamming or VOA THAILAND this hour only (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 15740, Feb 3 at 1911, very surprised to find new frequency
for Radio Martí with conversation about the station itself, loud &
clear with no jamming; while VG // 13820 is still on; and detectable
in the jamming still on 11930 & 11860, all Grimesland NC. 15740 would
normally be an open-carrier warmup for VOA French *1930, staying away
from 15730 itself as occupied by Botswana VOA French until 1930*. Then
site switch on 15730. Not rechecked until 2158 when 15740 is off.
Martí-mod maybe mistaken; but could it rehappen? (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)
5130 checked at 0357 was a JBA carrier.'
Maine KiwiSDR, far off beam heading, with slight pulse jamming under.
but joined in progress already underway at 1901.5, after 5 minutes of
dead air, missing their opening.
** U S A. 4980, Feb 3 at 0512 check, JBA carrier from WRMI-4, testing
with exciter only into 160-degree antenna, per Jeff White. Not sure
how much this or a typical exciter emit, presumably well under 100
watts (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
** U S A. 15610, Feb 3 at 1913, not even a JBA carrier from WEWN; off,
or not propagating all the way from Alabama? 12050 Spanish is also
VP/JBA most of the time; 5970 at night hardly exhibits 500 kW oomph
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)
