Shortwave Radiogram, program 36, 24-25 February 2018, all in MFSK32:  View Printable Version
Friday, February 23 2018

Hello friends,

The annual Winter SWL Fest will be March 1-3 at Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania.I will attend March 2 and 3. Hope to see some of you there. Walk-ins are welcome, but let them know by Friday (March 2) morning if you want to attend the Saturday evening banquet.
Response to last weekend's Shortwave Radiogram was somewhat light. I think this was partly due to poor propagation during the Sunday 2030 and 2330 UTC transmissions on 7780 kHz from WRMI in Florida. On the other hand, the Saturday 1600 UTC broadcast on 9400 kHz from Bulgaria was good to most of Europe, and even received in Ontario (see above). The Monday 0800 UTC broadcast was also received well in many parts of North America, although it's difficult to find North Americans awake at that hour. I will post some results at http://swradiogram.net, and you can see more at https://twitter.com/kaedotcom .

We will resume experiments with comparative modes soon, but this weekend will be all MFSK32. It includes details about plans for shortwave in the FY2019 budget of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (includes VOA, RFE/RL, Radio Free Asia,Radio/TV MartÃ, Radio Sawa and Alhurra). Not all the news is bad!

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 36, 24-25 February 2018, all in MFSK32:

Shortwave Radiogram, program 35, 17-18 February 2018, all in MFSK32:  View Printable Version

Hello friends,

After a few years of inactivity, I am again relaying news about international broadcasting through the Twitter feed @kaedotcom . If you don't have a Twitter account, just visit https://twitter.com/kaedotcom . Most of the Twitter items are eventually also posted to http://www.kimandrewelliott.com .
Last weekend's experiment with Olivia modes, all with 8 tones but bandwidths of 2000, 1000, and 500 Hz, generally showed the narrower bandwidths to provide better performance. Unfortunately, the narrower versions also provide slower text printout. I also noticed that MFSK32 usually provided a better decode than all the Olivia modes. Given that MFSK32 is faster and can transmit images, it becomes evident why it is our favorite mode. If we experience continuously poor reception on Shortwave Radiogram, e.g. if someone decides to jam to the program,we might look for a slower but more robust mode.

If you were not able to tune in last weekend and want to try decoding the three Olivia modes, as well as the MFSK32, these YouTube videos produced by Shortwave Radiogram listeners are available:

https://youtu.be/bMpfLLNB8XQ

This weekend's Shortwave Radiogram will be all MFSK32, including five images. The show includes news about a new Twitter feed that reports on FCC experimental license applications. Then two items from outer space. And finally a nod to the Winter Olympics taking place in a city whose name I can never remember, let alone spell.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 35, 17-18 February 2018, all in MFSK32:

2:38 New Twitter feed tracks FCC experimental licenses*
6:55 Search for an ionosphere for signs of planetary life*

Hello friends,
Last weekendâs experiment with the five 2000-Hz-wide Olivia modes was
interesting and fun. It appeared that Olivia 64-2000, 32-2000, and 16-2000 all performed well, even in difficult reception condition. It was not until Olivia 8-2000 and, more so, 4-2000that errors were seen. At about 75 words per minute, Olivia 16-2000 might be a good mode for Shortwave Radiogram, except that it is only about 70% as fast as MFSK32 and, unlike MFSK32, it cannot be used to transmit images.

If you have recordings of your Olivia mode reception, especially if your decode was lessthan 100%, try decoding from your recording after adjusting the integration period upward (Op Mode > Olivia > Custom). Read about the integration period here and note that the default integration period changes as the number of tones changes.Large integration periods can be a problem in amateur radio QSOs, because ofthe lag time between transmit and receive, but they are less of a problem in a broadcast situation. If you do not have a recording, you can use Scottâs video, with some errors seen from the Olivia 8-2000 and 4-2000 modes.
This weekend Shortwave Radiogram will be all MFSK32. There are two interesting stories about North Korea, and one about finding a lost
NASA satellite. Each of these has animage, and there is a bonus images of Wednesdayâs âsuper blue blood moon.â
The broadcast Sunday at 2330 UTC coincides with the kick off of Super Bowl LII.If ratings for the big game are down this year, it will be due to competition from Shortwave Radiogram.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 33,3-5 February 2018, all in MFSK32 centered on 1500 Hz:

1:31 Program preview
2:38 North Korea steps up mobile phone detection*
11:08 White House criticizes NBC reports from North Korea*
17:48 Canadian radio amateur finds lost NASA satellite*
