Australian DXer Joining November Hawaii DXpedition  View Printable Version
Monday, March 18 2019

<<< Thatâs great news! It should be a lot of fun comparing TP DX results! >>>

Yes, welcoming an international DXer to join a DXpedition is always a great opportunity to make a lifetime friend, and share a lot of great experiences together.

Nick, Tom and I were honored to welcome two Japanese DXers (Hiroo Nakagawa and Satoshi Miyauchi) to the Rockwork cliff in July of 2016, and they returned the favo(u)r by welcoming Nick to Japan a year later. The 2012 Yachats (OR) DXpedition had Mauno from Finland, Vlad from the Ukraine and Victor from Sri Lanka, all of whom stopped by my Rockwork cliff DXpedition motel in Cannon Beach for a nice visit.

In Chris R.'s case the Melbourne, Australia DXer was scheduled to visit the Cook Islands (Rarotonga) in June, and he asked about my DXing impressions there. When I told him that my most troublesome pests on Aitutaki were his Australia Overnight blasters 693-3AW and 1566-3NE he seemed to gain a lot of interest in Kauai :-)

Apparently Chris had been planning a June DXpedition to Rarotonga in the Cooks, but decided that Kauai in November would be a lot more thrilling. Maybe the wide open propagation paths to the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas during last November's trip had some influence on his decision? Chris R. joins Chris B., Craig B. and yours truly as the participants in what figures to be the DXing thrill of a lifetime. If your situation allows, we would be honored to have you with us as well!

Despite the K5 and K4's in the previous 18 hours, that was a reasonably fair Asiatic morning. The upper band was pretty dead however.

pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly):

594 JOAK 1413UT

747 JOIB 1349UT

828 JOBB 1323 UT

Reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker, though often battling with splash or noise):

567 JOIK //594 1320UT

738 Taiwan Fisheries 1410UT; //1143 a few minutes later

774 JOUB 1422UT

873 JOGB 1410UT

not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be understood by a native speaker:

972 HLCA 1323UT

Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music)

558 HLQH as 603 1322UT

585 JOPG //594 1353UT

603 HLSA soft music, woman talking //558 1322UT

693 JOAB //747 1421UT

702 NHK2 //774 1335UT

729 JOCK //594 1359UT

837 JOQK frantic man //594 1321UT

891 JOHK /594 1419UT

1143 Taiwan Fisheries woman talking //738 1415-16UT

1566 woman talking 1329UT, possibly Japanese, therefore HLAZ?

1593 classical piano, not //774, 1337UT; assumed CNR1, though not normal programming for them either?

Strongish het, no or "near imaginary" audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter)

657 666 711 846 864 909 954 1287 1422 1575 seemed to be Asian;

1548 seemed to be DU

best wishes,

Nick

IÂ ran the SDR recording 1345-1430 today but didn't have time today to
go through the files. A quick review of the display showed conditions
here were like what Nick had: good signals from low band Japanese, HLAZ
weaker than normal, etc.

I've hear this sort of programming on CNR1 several times on Sunday
mornings. Apparently some sort of weekend classical music feature.
