Logs
** CUBA. 11760, Jan 5 at 0448, RHC S9+20/30 and achieving VG
modulation! It can be done; could be start of a new year trend?
Reluctant to be that optimistic. In Spanish starting segment on artes
y cultura. Something`s not always wrong at RHC. The Other Side:

``Poverty, a lack of medicine and agony: a portrait of a Cuban family
The story of Carlos, Daimara and their children is one of the
increasingly common ones that can be found among the ruins of Havana,
in which poverty is a threat to life itself -- Alberto Martínez La
Habana 02 Ene 2024 - 19:07 CET

Carlos is 41 years old and is going blind. This father lives with his
three young children and his wife, Daimara, in extremely precarious
housing in Central Havana, one of the most populous municipalities in
the Cuban capital. His mother-in-law passed away almost three months
ago, after a long ordeal that included dementia...``

(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MALI. 15125, Jan 5 at 1644, pop song and talk, S5/S7 but best
extracontinental signal on distressingly mostly vacant 19m band: it`s
CRI relay in Arabic this hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 11514.9, Jan 5 at 1631, still a JBA signal here, no
doubt pirate Hikari FM (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA [and non]. 341 MCW kHz, Jan 5 at 0435 UT, local NDB, EI,
has trace of QRM from another 341. Used to be relatively common to
hear it mixing with OIN, 25 W, OberlIN KS, or the other next-closest
one, DNI, 25 W, Sherman-DeNIson TX (Glenn Hauser, Enid, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Fri Jan 6 at 2300, token English from SNR, S9+30
direct, first feature to be interview about the 2000 Camp David
accords vs current Palestinian situation; into that by 2305, and RSA
charges Israel with genocide at ICOJ, which the speaker says does not
amount to genocide. 2314-2317 Beirut correspondent on Lebanon`s
concerns about the war widening - her pieces are always no more than
two sesquiminutes long. 2317 contact info recorded by the retired
Justin Coe; then about Epiphany = 3 Magos holiday imminent in Spain
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SWAZILAND. 11660, Fri Jan 5 at 1632, HOA song with strumming,
S2/S4. EiBi shows TWR Ethiopian service, different languages depending
on DOW: Oromo, Amharic; and KAM on Fri: Kambaata, spoken by 600K.
Total span is 1630-1800 M-F, 1630-1730 Sat, 1630-1845 Sun (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 5 at 2301, VOT not off the air, S9+20/30 direct
but hardly solid with fading and noise, much inferior to simulSpain on
9690. Next check at 2355 into Maryland SDR, too late, already off
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2224 monitoring: missed check Fri

As noncommercial services, financial support appreciated. Thanks this
week to Chris Krug, KC5IIE, Tulsa OK, for a contribution via PayPal,
in US funds but not necessarily, to woradio at yahoo.com and says, ``I
very much appreciate all the hard work and dedication, Glenn! SWL is
alive and well thanks to your efforts. Happy 2024!``

One may also contribute via MO or check on a US bank to:
Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 3215, Jan 5 at 0446, pleased to observe that WWCR-1
transmitter has finally been fixed, with normal good modulation in
discussion of drone rules.

15825, Jan 5 at 1630, daytime WWCR-1 is also back to normal mod,
S9+20/30. Something`s no longer abnormal at Nashville. Presumably will
also apply to transition frequency 6115? Yes, at 2343 check into
Maryland SDR (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Trans-Atlantic JBA MW carrier search January 5 at
0439-0443: 693?, 774-2, 891-2, 1107, 1521, 1566.

Two carriers beating on 891 is very unusual; normally only the biggie
300/100 kW from Algeria. What else could it be? By power, hours and
geography, per MWlist, nothing at all significant in Europe; 2 x 50 kW
in Iran; 100 kW in Ethiopia; 100 kW in Turkey would be more likely.
The beat timed at 140/minute = 2.33 Hz. MWoffsets show Algeria on
890.9982 as of 3 months ago, so the other would be on 891.0005 or
890.9959. Nothing near the higher one in range. Closest to the lower
one would be Ethiopia on 890.9965 as of 2022-02-20.

1566 is surely TWR Benin, Parakou, 100 kW, as there is nothing else of
any significant power in Eurafrica or ME. I`ve detected it before, but
not lately tho have always been alert for it in my 9/kHz bandscans
around this hour. It`s often reported from as far as southwest Canada
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

Logs
** CANADA. 346 MCW kHz, Jan 4 at 0755, dash and YXL, the only beacon
barely overcoming noise level, 500 watts from Sioux Lookout, Ontario.
Where is it? ``Sioux Lookout is a town in Northwestern Ontario,
Canada. Located approximately 350 km (220 mi) northwest of Thunder
Bay, it has a population of 5,272 people ...`` i.e. more than halfway
to Manitoba border, NE of Dryden and north of Hwy 17, roughly 50 N/92
W (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CANADA. 28174 CW, re my Jan 3 log: ``Hi Glenn! Perhaps you
mis-typed the callsign into the QRZ.com search box. See
https://www.qrz.com/db/VE1VDM
73, Steve Howe, Saint Albans, VT`` - Tnx, you`re right, viz.:

``VE1VDM Canada flag Canada, Vernon Matheson, 189 Kaulback St., Apt
401, Truro, NS B2N0B6, Canada --- Current operating status:
VE1VDM/B 10m beacon at 10 watts on 28.174 mhz. TX is a AA7DJ 10 meter
beacon and the antenna is a 10m dipole approximately 35' AGL -
Location FN85ij``

And Steve replies again: ``Glenn, Happy to help! Vernon Matheson is
one of the most experienced LW beacon hunters in our ndblist.groups.io
group. His newer beacon, VA1VM, on 28,177 kHz, has recently been heard
in Italy by William Buchanan, one of our group’s 10m beacon hunters..
You might find Buchanan’s beacon list at
https://listof10mbeacon.blogspot.com/ useful. 73, Steve`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 660 kHz, re my XEFZ log, from Tim Hall, IRCA Mexican Log
editor: ``Thanks for reporting this, Glenn. It just dawned on me that
the ABC Deportes format was 24h when it was on 570, so I should have
realized that the 24h schedule would probably continue when the format
moved to 660. This raises another question: since the ABC Noticias
format moved from 660 to 1310 as part of the same format shuffle, I
wonder if the 1310 ended up being 1200-0600 (as it had been on 660, at
least at some point in the past), or if 1310 might be 24h by now. I
need to check that before next year's Log comes out. 73 Tim`` (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

WORLD OF RADIO 2223 monitoring: NOT confirmed UT Thursday January 4 at
0130 on WRMI 9395 - instead, continuous classic-rock such as ``Bridge
Over Troubled Waters``, or hard-rock music, segués with no pauses, no
announcements at all; perhaps as prélude to starting a week or more
later the thing now occupying this slot on the System G gray
skedgrid:

`Victory Above Only` --- Strange name for a program; nothing about in
on the WRMI Programming page, but broad websearch finds it right away:

which leads to involvement in Radio Africa Network, WRMI et al.
At 0200, 9395 joins in `WRMI Legends` as announced and gridded but
this segment for 15 minutes only, other stuff at 0215; and:

Confirmed UT Thursday June 4 at 0245, the 0230 WOR 2223 still on WRMI
9395, good direct.

Not confirmed Thursday June 4 at 1520 the alleged 1500 on WRMI 9955,

UNIDENTIFIED. 7485-7531, Jan 4 at 0755, approx. extent of very strong
multi-tones; perhaps one of those experimental HF Trading outlets;
this would be a serious problem for WRNO 7505 if it happened to be on.
Like what I logged before: ``UNIDENTIFIED. 7467-7520 approx., Oct 31

Peaks circa 7486 at S9+25. These would blow away WBCQ if it were on

Glenn Hauser logs January 2-3-4, 2024  View Printable Version
Thursday, January 04 2024

Logs
** BRAZIL. 5940.150, Jan 2 at 2303, presumed the variable R. Voz
Missionária, JBA in Portuguese? with less splatter than usual from
5935 WWCR which can also put a spur circa 5940.2 (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** CANADA. 28174 CW, Jan 3 at 2138, EEEEs VVV DE VE1VDM/B, picked
among many 10m hambeacons audible. WI5V list: ``28.174 VE1DVM C TRURO,
NOVA SCOTIA, CA, 1.2 min CW, then QSY to QRSS and WSPR-CW bands in
sequence``. But NO listing at QRZ.com with or without the /B. This
hardly ever happens, but it is optional, non-official, after all. And
commercial (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** EGYPT. 9440, Jan 3 at 2143, no signal from R. Cairo sesquihour in
English; something`s egregious in Egypt (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MADAGASCAR. 11610, Jan 2 at 2316, S9+20/30 of dead air: yet again
MWV fails to turn off at 2258* after Arabic. Something`s maladjusted
at Mahajanga (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MEXICO. 660, Jan 3 until 0711, song ``Gloria`` in English, nice to
hear after a long time; ID as ``Esto es ABC Deportes``, and another
song in English, ``Can`t Help Falling In Love With You``, hardly
sports in Spanish as branded! Fades down with a 2.5 Hz SAH =
150/minute. 0725 a song in Spanish, may or may not be same station,
then ``Killing Me Softly``. 0732 fuller ID with AM and FM frequencies
but could not copy them. IRCA Mexican Log shows the only 660 by that
name is XEFZ, Monterrey NL, supposedly off the air after 0600, 10/1
kW. MWoffsets shows XEFZ on 659.9981 as of 2019y. KSKY TX and KTNN AZ
both on 660.0002 as of 2023, i.e. 2.1 Hz away from XEFZ. BTW there are
no XEs at all on 670, 680. This was on a household radio with internal
antenna only, positioned to null E/W (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 9690, Wed Jan 3 at 2300, token English from SNR: after news,
interview with creator of an animated film with music but no dialog;
and then about the drought in Catalonia. VG direct (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

** TURKEY. 5960, Jan 2 at 2302, no signal direct from VOT, apparently
AWOL; altho did not get around to checking later in hour or via
remotes.

6125, Jan 3 amid 0400 English, noted on the air as I tuned past it.

5960, Jan 3 at 2326, no signal into UTwente or Maryland SDR, again.
Something`s always erroneous at Emirler (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 13563.5 CW, Jan 2 at 2312, dash and PCO, the Pine, ColoradO
beacon JBA instead of usually nothing audible on this band. LWCA list
shows 13563.49~ at DM79ij, reported 2023/11. Much more about this in
my last log of April 14, 2023 at 2225 (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 28248 CW, Jan 3 at 2141, among many 10m hambeacons I pick
this one: DE KG2GL/B. Sure of frequency but WI5V list is 2 kHz below:
``28.246 KG2GL I NUTLEY, NEW JERSEY # 5W, RINGO VERTICAL`` QRZ.com:
``KG2GL USA flag USA, Anthony J Testa, Jr, 173 Conover Ave, Nutley, NJ
07110 USA -- I operate a ten meter beacon full time on 28.246. I would
appreciate all SWL/RST reports via e-mail tonyqrp1@gmail.com`` - See
also CANADA (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2223 monitoring: confirmed UT
Wednesday January 3 at 0030 on WRMI 9395, S9/+10 into Missouri SDR; as
usual a bit of extraneous music between the ID and WOR starting.

Also confirmed Wednesday January 3 at 1515 the 1500 on WRMI 9955,
S7/S9 with no jamming audible -- continuing the unscheduled airing as
heard on 3 of 4 Weds in Dec; instead of scheduled 1500 Thursdays.

Also confirmed Wednesday January 3 at 2200 on WBCQ 7489.950, S9+10
direct. Next:

0130 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW
0130 UT Thursday WRMI 5010 to S
0230 UT Thursday WRMI 9395 to NNW

Thanks this week to William T Hassig, Mt Prospect IL, for a generous
check to Glenn Hauser, P O Box 1684, Enid OK 73702

One may also contribute, not necessarily in US funds via PayPal to
woradio at yahoo.com (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A. 6115, Jan 2 at 2322, WWCR-1, S9+30/40, but just as suptorted
as the other #1 frequencies, 15685 earlier, 3215 later. Unfortunately,
this affects one broadcast each of `Frecuencia al Día` and `VORW`,
otherwise disposable gospel huxters, per program guide already redated
January 1. Lou Johnson also notes this Jan 3: ``6115 Audio is in the
toilet! Hope they don't charge people for that! Lou KF4RCA``. I
recheck UT Jan 4 at 0034 into Maryland SDR: S9/+12 but dead air, then
extremely suptorted modulation peaks unreadable. Something`s nauseous
at Nashville. And they haven`t noticed? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** VANUATU. 9960, Jan 3 at 0447, JBA carrier direct, presumed evidence
of R. Vanuatu; vs S9+10 intermittent local noise bursts (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)
