Glenn Hauser logs May +13, 2025  View Printable Version
Wednesday, May 14 2025

Logs
** CHAD [non]. 15505, May 13 at 0629, JBA signal, OOFSOB, trying to
decide whether English or French; but must have been Kanuri, as EiBi
shows it`s R. Ndarason International via Woofferton UK this hour, and
following hour on same via Ascension. Outdated? Aoki listing shows
9535 at 06-07 via WOF, 07-08 12050 ASC, both of which we used to hear
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** CUBA. 15230, May 13 at 2222, open carrier S9, trace of suptorted
mod, probably Portuguese from RHC where something`s always wrong. Hear
this more often in mornings than afternoons (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. Re my latest 7475 YHWH log: ``Hi Glenn - May 12, was
a good day for YHWH (7475) reception, via Kiwi SDR remote at Palomar
Mt. #2, So. Calif.;
from 0405+ UT and still good at 0520, even with QRN (static). Attached
remote audio. Ron (San Francisco)`` Howard (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** ROMANIA. Re Romania changes frequencies: RRI English at 0000 May 13
is already back? on 11620, not 9550. So temp sked over? See previous
discussion:

[WOR] Romania changes frequencies: Eike Bierwirth Sun, May 11 at 1:13
AM: Radio Romania has changed many of its frequencies again. According
to their website, this is because of a malfunction at the Tsiganeshti
site:

"A malfunction has been recorded at one of the transmitters in
Tiganesti, and we will temporarily be broadcasting on different
frequencies." (dated 4 May 2025). The German section adds that the
replacement transmitter is not capable of transmitting in DRM mode,
while the Spanish section identifies the malfunctioning transmitter as
BD 300-2 and the replacement transmitter as BD 300-1.

The new frequencies had been registered with HFCC from the beginning
of the A-25 season but had been unused so far. The same had happened
for parts of the previous season.

English broadcasts:

Western Europe
0530-0600 9750
1100-1200 17630
1700-1800 15180
2030-2100 17580
2200-2300 9740

Africa
1100-1200 17860

North America, East coast
2030-2100 17580
0000-0100 9550

North America, West coast
0300-0400 11620

Japan
2200-2300 15170

Note: No DRM, none of the registered frequencies for Australia are
currently in use

GERMAN
0600-0630 11620
1400-1500 13740
1800-1900 11750

SPANISH to South America (no mention of other targets, not affected?)
2200-2300 15200 (new time!)

The websites of other language services did not show this notice, but
may just as well be affected. 73! Eike``

May 11: ``RRI in English to North America was very well heard in
Masset, but tonight at 0335 tune-in, just a barely there signal on
11620, the listed alternate, but 9740 is booming in as per normal with
Jazz music. 73, Walt`` Salmaniw.

John A. Figliozzi: ``Could be wrong and hope I am, but sounds like
this station is on life support, technologically speaking, as a
shortwave station.``

``Why would RRI need to change frequencies due to a transmitter
failure when an alternate unit should simply run the same schedule?
This makes no sense. Stephen Luce, Houston, Texas``

``Simply different feeder line and wave matching circuit, from TX #1
or #2 -- towards curtain arrays / azimuth directions – vy73 de wolfie
df5sx``

``I was assuming the antenna switching matrix could feed any
transmitter to any antenna. Guess that is not the case for the RRI
facilities. Stephen Luce``

``Apparently not, and such limited commutation possibilities are
common for old facilities. In addition they also appear to have
numerous antennas that can be used only on two adjacent bands, hence
the frequency changes. The modernization in the penultimate decade was
obviously limited to replacing the transmitters. And now they run out
of spare parts also for what has been installed back then.
Kai Ludwig``

But May 13: ``RRI came on 9740 with English today at 2200 UTC with a
very nice signal into the Washington, DC SDR. So, still on this
replacement frequency, and not back to 11620 yet. Harold Sellers,
Vernon, British Columbia, Canada`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 15500, 17715, 15520, 15390, May 13 at 2221, all four REEs on
air and G-VG, unEnglish Tuesday (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785 & 9875, May 13 at 2221 direct and 2238 into UTwente,
NO signals from VOT English. Something`s always erroneous at Emirler
(Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. 28201 CW, May 13 at 2216, E times 20, and NST DE
N4WLO/B very fast and a warbling tone. WGB list: ``28200.5 N4WLO -

** U S A. ``[WOR] Ted Randall --- Saw a post on FB stating Ted Randall
had passed away. I really liked his music shows on WTWW when he was
there. RIP. 73 Chris KC5IIE Krug, Tulsa, OK``

That might explain why Legends and WRMI 5050 were off air when I
checked as in previous report: ``5050, May 11 at 0122, this WRMI is
off; pretty sure I tuned
across it earlier. Supposed to be on `Legends` at 0100-0400.
Something`s odd at Okeechobee`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. Re my 1549.82 carrier, reported from Europe as "1550
26.4 0230 OAM5M R Visión, Pisco"

``Glenn: — For what it's worth: MW LIST has an mp3 link next to
OAM5M's listing. I hit it just now, 0822 UT on 5/13, and got audio, in
the form of music. Many of the times posted in MW LIST are wrong;
perhaps this indicates round-the-clock operation? Just a thought.
Decades ago, we on the Left Coast could sometimes hear Peru under TGV
(I think it was) on 880 [TGJ -- gh]. Any Peru nowadays would be a
helluva catch! — the other G H`` {Greg Hardison} (Glenn Hauser, OK,
WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9123-9170 approx., May 13 at 0622, multi-carrier
multi-tones beating over wide range peaking about S9+5 amid. What`s

Glenn Hauser logs May 11-12, 2025  View Printable Version
Tuesday, May 13 2025

Logs
** FRANCE. 5975-5980-5985, May 12 at 0411, DRMish noise, pitch seems
to be shifting slightly. It`s one of the irregular tests of TDF,
overriding the leapfrog mixing product from WWCR 5890 over 5935
another 45 kHz above (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** MADAGASCAR. 13790, May 12 at 0423, SSOB, really the OSOB, S9+10/20
unID language talk, but EiBi shows it`s BBC Somali, 0400-0430 M-F.
HFCC shows 250 kW at 0 degrees - does that mean due north or
non-direxional? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NEW ZEALAND [and non]. 13690, May 12 from *0558.4, Bellbird
tweeting IS S8/S9, as RNZP has just QSYed from 17675 where I checked
first to find nothing. Timesignal 0600 about a sesquisecond behind
WWVH! I know which one I believe; can`t RNZ do better than that? If
you can`t maintain a timesignal precisely, skip it. RNZ ID, introduces
BBC relay for next half hour (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** NORTH AMERICA. 7475, May 12 at 0356, S9 but JBA thin voice of
Josiah on anti-Christ pirate Station YHWH (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** OKLAHOMA. 1550, May 12 at 0429 UT, ESPN, on E/W loop only, implying
it`s close to that line. Very few ESPNs listed in NRC AM Log, but
surely my closest, KYAL Sapulpa, tho only 40 watts at night (Glenn
Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 5850 WRMI & 5890 WWCR, May 12 at 0414, TOMBS
VG on both as YL is anticipating riot control training coming up in
September; then BS speaks from when he was undead. Why in the world
does TOM think it`s useful to play such extremely dated recordings;
trying to fool listeners into believing it`s all about now? Axual year
never mentioned, as it was obvious back when it was live. Do they ever
even mention that he`s deceased? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** SPAIN. 15500 S9/+20, 17715 S9+10/20, 15520 & 15390 also on air for
2200 token English from SNR at 2224 check Mon May 12 (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 9875.018+, Sun May 11 at 2048, VOT English not off the air,
S9+15/20 backwards into UTwente, `The Pulse of Turkish Foreign Policy`
ending, multi-lingual ID filler reel. 2051 `Letterbox`, Cemre starts
with 5 May the 98th anniversary of TRT Radio. 1) Alan Holder, UK,
about access problems for tourists to his IOW; has been listening for
5+ decades, remembers former staff by names, used to be called ``Voice
of Sunshine``. Tech matters: NAm antenna problems, new 300 kW
transmitter? 11785 is too close to Brasil, should shift to 11790. 9875
has N Korea QRM at 2030, shift to 9405[?]. 1992-2001y was span of
Sunshine Radio. No new equipment yet. CE will reassess frequencies
with HFCC [Brasil refuses to participate in HFCC, so how could he
possibly know about 11780? duh]. It`s already 2059 when she gets to 2)
Ann? Irving? Pennsylvania ham gets 7275 well [and does not complain
about it being an intruder into the American 40m hamband!]. 3) Akira?
Saki?, Hokkaido, Japan heard Chinese broadcast, enjoyed music. 4)
Ricky Hein, South Dakota wants to be notified when 11785 and 7275 have
been fixed; he also phones. 5) Andre?, Russia listened to Arabic. 6)
Canada, Turkey produce coffee? Not much due to climate. Originally
imported from Yemen. 7) Ralf Urbantschik?, Germany. 2111 that`s it,
song fill. 2115 `Lbox` theme and outro which is the same canned
announcement played as intro, with same method for other programs.
That way you can`t play the opening or closing by mistake. I continue
to wonder why in the world they insert a song within the mailbag
program, not a request, since more and more songs are scattered
thruout each transmission. So I don`t need even to check the 2200 on
11785 repeat.

Alan Holder writes about his reply on Lbox: ``[WOR] TURKIYE - Enquiry
about Emirler transmitters -- re: ``Wolfgang Bueschel also pointed out
that some HFCC listings for TRT include 300 kW power, which means that
they have (or will) install a new transmitter at Emirler. {WRTH says
they already have 5 x 500 kW}``

``Some current HFCC listings for VOT are for 300 kW (the majority are
at 250 kW - their 500 kW units have been operating at half power for
some time now).

I enquired about the possible installation of a new transmitter in my
latest e-mail to VOT, which was read out on this week's "Letterbox"
programme. Presenter Cemre (Jemre) had this response from an engineer
at Emirler:

"There has been no new equipment investment made yet. The power and
frequency of the current broadcasts are deemed appropriate at this
moment in time".

So it seems that they are using an existing tx at 300 kW to try to
give a few dB extra signal strength in more distant target areas.

I also mentioned adjacent interference to VOT from Brazil on 11780
which affects VOT on 11785, as well as Voice of Korea co-channel to
VOT on 9875 from 2030-2100.  The engineer's reply:

"HFCC records show they are clear frequencies. If they are not
registered frequencies as mentioned, we will reassess them".

I suggested alternative frequencies, so maybe some changes will be
made soon. Alan Holder, G4ZBH, Isle of Wight, U.K.`` (Glenn Hauser,
OK, WOR)

** TURKEY. 11785, May 12 at 2225, VOT not off the air, S9 direct but
insufficient vs noise level (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

** U S A [and non]. WORLD OF RADIO 2294 monitoring: Confirmed Sunday

Also confirmed UT Monday May 12 from 0301 on Area 51 webcast only,
after JL ``gotta go`` at 0300 on WBCQ 5130- which stayed on a few

UNIDENTIFIED. From Arctic Radio Club mv-eko May 12, these two
references to a Peruvian offset frequency closely match the unID I
have been hearing and thought to be much closer XEREL in Morelia,
Mexico! However WRTH 2025 and mwlist show hours of 3 kW OAM5M are
1100-0205 UT while I have been hearing that later overnight. Pisco is
right near the coast south of Lima. More like SSE from here than
Morelia SSW. I need to DF it again.

``1550 26.4 0230 OAM5M R Visión, Pisco med lokala program. (1549,820).
FD [Fredrik Dourén]`` From the email Jan Edh 8.5.2025 [translated]:
The nights are getting short now and soon it will be the end of the
listening season. It is already light before 02 UTC and sunrise is a
little over half an hour later. On 28/4 it was completely different on
the band, but that doesn't mean it was better. At 00-00.30 there were
some Peruvians like 1549.819 and 1469.983 but also Puerto Rico 1580,
Colombia, and Venezuela, even CBI at 1140, and a little later also
WDEA 1370. But nothing particularly good. Quite a few signals until
02.30 but also a lot of splatter and even some thunder crack. This
after I switched to 285 degrees.`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 4850, May 12 at 0418, JBA carrier slightly on minus side
where normally there is none; still at 0629 when I put it on 4849.94.
The only in HFCC and Aoki is Urumqi`s Kazakh service but not at this
hour and would not be propagating anyway from midday there -- and
probably out of use during A seasons anyway tho registered in A25
HFCC. EiBi has *no* entries between 4840 and 4885! even tho utes are
eligible, which this could be, or a pirate. Others heard it:

``[WOR] UNID Station 4850 kHz 0508 UTC (Pirate?/Other) --- I noticed
this transmission tonight, 5/12 as I was monitoring WWCR 4840 kHz {for
his own show VORW}. From at least 0430 UTC there seems to be a weak
UNID station on 4850 kHz broadcasting mostly instrumental music (one
selection was identified as a Contemporary Christian song), no ID
heard nor any spoken word programming.

Direct in Florida reception is weak (Tecsun PL-880 w/40ft wire), the
best signal seems to be from an SDR in Ireland with S7 reception.
Unsure what to make of this transmission, first time in a while that
I'm hearing anything on 4850 kHz. All the best, John ,
Orlando, Florida, United States``

``Thanks, John, for the tip. May 12, listening to 4850 AM, from 0530+
UT, via Knoxville, TN, Kiwi SDR remote; very poor; music of some type;
0600, announcer, but too weak to make out anything, then back to
music. Yes, Ireland clearly //,
but not good enough to pull in any meaningful details. Still an UNID.
Ron (San Francisco)`` (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 6865-6915 approx., May 12 at 0426, DRM-like noise S9+20
direct, but too wideband. What`s this? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9236.0, May 12 at 1514, S4/S5 open carrier with clix,
but too weak vs noise level to divine their extent. Previously logged
February 26, March 12, 22. One of these clickers ending in -6. What
are they? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

UNIDENTIFIED. 9936.0, May 12 at 0420, open carrier with clix, again on
a frequency ending in -6. Clix every 3 seconds = 20/minute, and at
0435 could detect them vs noise level out to 9923/9948. Still at 0556.
What is this? (Glenn Hauser, OK, WOR)

From now and for an unknowntime, at least for 3 years, I will not use any radio except the remote SDRs forDXing. Recently we moved from the village back to the city in a space thatprohibits the use of desktop DXing, a place flooded by high levels of noise inthe LMHF bands. The radio is now used mostly for FM, for news listening.we runpolitically lively condition with always very interesting twits every day ..
