Re: [IRCA] Ferrite Sleeve Loop (FSL)

Sounds like you are getting some positive results with the sleeved ferrite. I wasn't disputing that they do work, just his assertion of how and why. A 4' air wound loop is nice but not terribly portable ;)

I had the idea a while back to use stacked ferrite torroid cores to make a hollow rod or "sleeve" with a small adjustable rod inside to fine tune the inductance and I still may go that route for an antenna project since I need 3 fine tunable loops.

16 Amidon FT-50B-61 stacked would make a 1/2" by 8" sleeve with R61-025-200 rods for the tuning slugs is what I had in mind and still may have to go that route. I wasn't planning on sinking a C-note into this but I may have to in order to get the results I want. I'd like to expriment with the 3 1/2" diameter torroids but at $45 a piece....

If anyone wants to give it a try be my guest. I won't squawk about stealing my idea, I'm probably not the first one anyway but do everyone a favor and let us know what you find out.

If your going for Longwave I'd suggest using the 77 material instead of the 61. 61 should work well from MW up to 10 or 20MHz. 75 should be useful in the lower LW down to VLF.

Been eyeballing the PL-310 for a portable MW unit with SW capabilities. Anyone have any experience with them?

Several of us on the Ultralight Radio (ULR) yahoo group have been experimenting with FSLs for a couple of months now, after reading Graham Maynard's article. Most of the info we've learned has been discussed on that group. I think it's safe to say that none of us buy the (hogwash) theories espoused by Graham Maynard, but the practical implementation does work for making an antenna out of a ferrite sleeve, though some of his claimed performance details have yet to be duplicated by anyone else. And he is far from the first to try such an idea; others from years ago have already written about it, though his own ideas about how it works are strictly unique to him. For a practical example, using a Tecsun PL-380 ULR and a FSL with LF coil, I've heard over 270 NDBs, listening indoors the past couple of months.
